    I’m surrounded by big personalities. I find them inconsiderate and rude to be honest. I am constantly talked over, never being allowed to complete a sentence. It’s gotten to the point where it makes me angry and I am not one who gets angry. Thank you for posting this.

    Very helpful video🙏🏻 thank you so much. Could you please do a video for me.: I start to explain something funny to my husband and in a minute he was looking to a different person who is his daughter laughing to somebody else and after a minute I was talking to him he ask her something completely different. When he did it second time I ask him why he did it and he answer that I was boring. You spoke a lot!!!! Actually they were speaking it’s other much more. But finally I understood that maybe it’s because of the energy that she has that he likes it🤷🏼‍♀️

    Hi Myka, love this, although I have a question, some of these are very much used here in the UK as politeness, does the same rules apply in the UK without being considered rude? Any other examples of things to say instead of those? Thank you.

    BBC's article "YouGov survey: British sarcasm 'lost on Americans' was quite eye opening. Business communication and politeness is so cultural.

    I noticed you often used the term “you know.” If it is something they already know should you be reminding them they have forgotten it? Or should it be restated in a different way? Should that term be dropped?

    I feel in some instances not asking permission might come across as impolite if not rude. Am i interpreting this tip incorrectly?

  • @mykameier7474

    @mykameier7474

    Every scenario may be different but if you feel like the person you are speaking to will expect permission in say a business setting, then definitely still ask it. I think the more senior you get in your career, the less you need to ask for permission! We never want to come across rude, so do what feels best for you. :) Thank you for watching!

    I wonder how culture influences this? Or personality? A country that praises and rewards extraversion and being loud (like the US) for example? The US workplaces are dominated by sports speech (YUCK) and boisterous, loud voices.

    I have a question. I work as a receptionist at a small to medium construction company in DFW Texas. My receptionist greeting is: "Thank you for calling (insert name of business), this is Kris, how many I help you?" I've done some checking and this seems to be the most professional and respectful way to answer the phone. I did this with a person today and they said, "Hello how are you?" I replied "I'm fine. How can I help you?" Then the response to that was, "Never mind. You need to work on your customer service sweetie." So I hung up. The craziest part is they called back 10 minutes later and it turns out it was a marketing sales person trying to see about getting us to sign and supposedly purchase an ad with them. So what did I do wrong? I never did ask them why they were so offended by my customer service skills. I did some googling and the closest I can come up with is that I didn't ask how they are doing or something. I will admit I was given a different task to complete at the same time and I was a bit distracted. Never the less the whole thing really startled me. Is it really so awful? What should I do better? I don't feel that bad since they were trying to get us to purchase something from them. I do realize as a Southerner that most of us are a little more rigid on societal rules and protocols. I do feel my tone was polite and professional the whole time but maybe I sounded pre-occupied I really am unsure. I do want to come across as professional at my job though. I've looked up receptionist etiquette and I think I follow most of it. I would be thrilled if Ms. Meier would do a business/phone etiquette video. Especially since I really hate being called "sweetie, hon" etc by pretty much anyone except maybe a significant other. I know here in the South it is a "thing" and I put up with but it seem patronizing and fake most of the time anyway. Any feedback is appreciated.

    The person who called you sounds very thin-skinned. When you asked, "how may I help you?" that was her cue to simply get to the point of her call. Instead, she played games and became dissatisfied with your side of the conversation. She seems confused about the difference between business calls and personal calls. Her criticism of you was entirely inappropriate. I hope you don't have to deal with this type of thing often. You sound very thoughtful and conscientious.
