Good video thanks it was good to learn how to remove the speedo from the housing.. To fix the fogging on mine, I drilled a couple of holes in the back and inserted several of the dry balls out of a moisture package.. its been good ever since.. ohh once or twice its got a bit of fogging down low, but doesn’t stay for long when riding. Its been over 18 months so forgot about it till now.. probably could do with some fresh balls in it next time I have the dash off. (2011 Fatboy)

Thanks for the comments. I do think that some ventilation would help. Mine still fogs just a little for a few minutes when I first start riding, but it's still much better than it was.

I soaked my glass in alcohol for about half hour and then scrubbed with a microfiber. That coating came off fairly easy that way. Thanks for your video, it eased this project along for me.

Hi good to see someone else trying to fix this. My 2018 fatboy has this bad. It was fogging hiding the lcd. I pulled it apart and found, like you did, goo inside the glass. I had to scour it off and managed to scratch the glass with a nylon scourer. . . Well things went from bad to worse and the first time I rode in the hot sun half the speedo went white with fog. hmmm. I tried drilling a couple of 1/8 holes in the base and managed to nick a tiny transistor on the circuit board. . . lots of things stopped working. I plucked up the gumption to pull it apart once more, using 2 forks to remove the needle as per another vid, found the 3mm size transistor and somehow soldered it back on. Omg all working again! . . . .but it still fogs up, now its 10x worse than when I started. But i've learnt a few things. The speedo fogs after riding for a while and when its humid and chilly out. I'm pretty sure ( latest theory!) the cause is heat inside the speedo from the lighting warming inside the glass, and a cool day. This causes moisture inside to condense on the glass. To fix it we have to remove the moisture, and somehow seal it up.

Hi Richard! Mine still fogs just a little after riding for a few minutes and then clears up. I considered drilling a couple of vent holes like you did, but I think I'll steer away from that now. Thanks for sharing your experience.

@@NINEPOINTFIVEPROJECTS Try putting about 6-8 of those small Moisture Packs you find in electronics inside the housing all around the gauge,,tape them around the plastic housing that holds the gauge,i’ve heard that will fix the problem…

My 2010 Road King fogs sometimes. Usually when it gets humid outside. I’m afraid to take it apart like you did. The one guy that inserted some dry balls from a moisture packet may try that first. Very good video. I hope it worked for you in the long run.

Guarantee you'll still have problems. There are multiple points on these speedos where humidity can get in.

Harley applies an anti fog coating to the inside of the lens. Sometimes under certain lighting conditions you can see what looks like a very faint spray paint run inside. Not all have the issue to the point of being able to see it. I have taken my Ultra to Harley and they replaced the entire speedo. Dealer said sometimes Harley applies the anti fog spray a little too thick and a run develops. I never had actual water vapor in my speedo.

@NINE POINT FIVE PROJECTS First time viewer & new sub.🙋‍♂️ I'm in LA. (Lower Alabama.😁) I ride Sportsters. (Actually I ride anything without a hydraulic clutch.😂) FYI/Warning This is going to be a long comment. 😁 I guess I'm the 45th comment on this subject. What I noticed is everyone has an idea and no one's examining cause & effect. (or Root Cause.) First, let's eliminate electronic speedos from consideration. They're in a whole different ballpark. (No moving parts.) Mechanical & electro mechanical speedos (like 90% of speedos these days) have similar pros & cons. Namely they both can be effected by temperature and pressure. The effects can be computed & averages determined so tolerances can be designed into the build process to minimize any detrimental effects. From scuba diving I learned that the atmospheric pressure at sea level is considered to be 1 atmosphere. Every 33 feet below sea level is another atmosphere. Going up from sea level has an opposite effect. (I have no idea how this relates to pounds PSI.🤷🏻‍♂️) For this reason these speedos are designed to breathe for lack of a better term. According to Google😁 the average height above sea level in your area is 500 feet. For lack of specific knowledge lets assume that your speedo was designed to breathe through the seal of the front cover and has no other vent holes. (Mine have a small vent hole in the back at the bottom) If you ride from your house to my house, (I'm appox. 100' above sea level.) you'd gain 12-13 atmospheres of pressure. You'd create a positive pressure inside the speedo. If you ride the other direction, say the top of Stone Mtn in Georgia you'd lose 330+ atmospheres creating a negative pressure. (Vacuum.) In 40+ years of working heavy construction I had many chances to observe the pressure & vacuum testing of air & liquid tight structures. One of the things I observed is that 2-3 PSI of positive pressure or 3-4 Hg (inches of mercury) vacuum can have observable effects on 1/4" steel structures and cause welds on 1/2" steel structures to crack or pull lose. From the video I see that your speedo looks just like the ones on my Sportsters. Just shorter front to back & about twice the dia. I'm guessing its housing is made from the same appox. 1/16" +/- plastic. I guess a good question at this point is, Are you going to trust a speedo that can't breath or fart to change altitude by a couple hundred feet & still read correctly and not fail completely?😁 Now that we've established the fact that these speedos have to breath. To the specific issue of humidity. It's inherent & GFL getting rid of it. You could replace yours with a sealed all electronic one. A cheap one costs $1-200+ (US) & most likely comes with it's own humidity sealed inside of it.😂 For $3-500+ (US) you can get a good quality one that was sealed inside a dry nitrogen atmosphere and be quaranteed "No Humidity".🤞 (With a bit of luck you shouldn't have any need for the customer service department.😉) I have an '04 XL883 that came with a speedo that was DOA when I got it. The only thing that worked was the light. Even it fogged up after 20-40 minutes on the road. Two months ago, (after 4 weeks of scratching my head over speedos) I replaced it with a brand new original one from the HD factory. (a little over $200.) So far only a little inconsequential fogging at the very bottom. My '05 1200 Custom on the other hand still has the working original speedo. After 15-40 minutes on the road you can vaguely tell where the needle is pointing if the sun is shining on it.😂 I learned to ride in the early 60s at the age of 10. In the early 70s I got my first Harley. Been hooked ever since.😁 The only thing I need a working speedo for is the odometer and trip meter. The 1st makes it easier to sell the bike & the second makes it easier to guess how long it's gonna take me to get home from what ever lost place I've ridden to when the wife calls wondering where I am & how long she should leave lunch sitting on the counter.😂 Back to my statement "GFL getting rid of it." There is something that can be done to temporarily relieve the condition. It requires an accomplice with a heliarc welder and a small bucket with a form fitting lid. It helps if your accomplice already uses dry pumped nitrogen or argon as a shielding gas. The gas costs $20 to $50 for a pony bottle, (the last time I checked) that should be enough to purge the humidity filled air out of you speedo. (It may take an hour or two.) Make sure the speedos vent is on the bottom during the purge. Remove the speedo from the bucket & reinstall it in the bike immediately. The humidity will eventually return but if you've got to be able to see your speedo to ride this should help.☺ Good Luck & Best Wishes from the Northern Gulf of Mexico 🙋‍♂️ PS, If you're willing to purchase the set up you can get everything you need for less than $500. If you use a 1 gallon bucket the pony bottle should be able to purge a half dozen speedos or 1 speedo a half dozen times.😉😁 That works out to be cheaper than buying new speedos just so you can tell when you need to fill up or when you're risking the attentions of the local enforcement officers.😂🤷🏻‍♂️

Someone said that HD had an antifog coating on the inside of the glass. Maybe it breaks down after time as I could def tell something was on the inside of the glass when I diss-assembled, You can see it in the video. Either way, thanks again!

It's condensation, from when the bike gets cold and then warms up sealing it off will not help at all, if anything might be worse, better off having it open to the air so that the moisture can escape, if you seal it up there's no place for it to go when evaporating, same thing happens to your metal parts when they get cold and then get warmed up they get condensation on them from the air, only difference is it's open to air and dissipates after a while... Hope that makes sense !!

It me forever to get the ring off my fuel gauge with using a screwdriver and small pry bar like you did, I removed the ring off my volt gauge in not even 5 min. I used one of those small Keychain bottle openers, it grabs the back as you pull down and just opens it like a bottle cap

Thanks so much for sharing. My Heritage also fogs up exactly on the stuff I need to see. Fuel gauge, trip reading, time etc. so I have to refuel using guesswork, I don’t know how far I’ve traveled since the last refuel or how much fuel I have in the tank. Good old H-D won’t help, neither will the dealer, bless them (not). A new unit is £304.00 and I’m told they also fog. H-D really should sort it out. It’s a manufacturing fault. £22,000.00 for a bike NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE !

Umm , Iam pretty sure water is not getting in , its called condensation which is common , you dont need to do what you did although it very interesting anyway , I think you will find now after doing what you did then water will get in , this issue is a manufacturing fault in most Harleys , not a great deal you can do to fix it , even if you purchase another unit the problem may still come back as there manufactured in high humidity environment when their sealed ( which is the problem ) , you could try carefully drill in the back casing to vent it , it worked for my 2013 HSC

I may have the solution. I put two small bags of moisture absorber next to the module. You get these small bags when you buy something, it's in the package... No more fog!

So, what I've seen on other channels is that you do not want to use any type of sealer because if you don't let it breathe it will fog up.

Instead of going through all this i would have put about 6 of the small moisture packs that you find in electronic items in the back of the housing,,i’m positive that would have solved the moisture problem once and for all…

I thought about that but the harness plugs to the back of the speedo via connector that's molded into the housing.

Have you had any humidity build up inside of it again since you did this or did it accomplish what you wanted it to?

Actually the first time I got out in the sun with it, it fogged just a little and then cleared up. Since that one time it's stayed clear with no problems.

Not at all an expert myself and I am viewing this and other videos to see how to clean the inside of my speedo lens but in other videos the folks are saying DO NOT use caulk or silicone to seal it, that they don't do it at the factory for a reason it has to breath to prevent the fogging. Just passing on info that others have offered. But great job, well done. I am going to follow your instruction and advise but forego sealing it with anything.

Hi Scott, thanks for the comments. I think there are a lot of opinions on the subject. I am inclined to disagree with not using caulk or silicone. I think the reason it's not used at the factory is because they feel the design where the rubber seal is enough to seal it without the need of any other sealer. I believe the thing is supposed to be airtight from the factory but I think it does need to breathe somewhat. A system that will let air travel thru it, but still keep moisture out.. As I have mentioned in other comments, mine still fogs intermittently when I first start riding but does clear after a bit.. not bad but, aggravating all the same. Again, I appreciate you watching the video and the comments.

@@NINEPOINTFIVEPROJECTS All good points I also saw where some folks are drilling holes in the back of the housing and they are all saying it is working to keep the fogging away but advise extreme caution because the circuit board is right there and some have said they hit it. But mine also seems to have a bit of dust or something accumulating on the inside of the lens so it needs to be taken apart and cleaned and at least now I know how to do that whether I decide to caulk or not. Thanks

Harley davidson knows about this. My speedo and other gauges get more than what i saw here.

Thanks for the update and the return text. I have a 2010 Streetglide with the same issue with speedo, gas gauge . Harley said its normal when it humid out. We can replace it, but it also happen in the morning during mid summer into late morning

I'm surprised they consider that normal..it's a problem for a lot of people apparently.

I just replaced my Fatboy's speedometer with and aftermarket speedometer due to how bad my factory speedometer was hard to read. I wasn't about to take it apart to try to fix the problem.

If you are going to do this I would use a hand pin vise. Don't use a drill with a motor. If you do it with a pin vise you can go a little at a time and not drill into the circuit board inside.

I have tried what you have done ,didn't work, sprayed rear with hard lacquer and silicone grease inside connector, didn't work . bought a new speedo , fogged up just the same, its so bad I cant see my fuel gauge. Dealer says "they all do it".....I love my bike but feel very disappointed that after paying more than I have ever paid for a "quality" bike that I have this problem .

Why do this never happend on Jap bikes? Even not on cheap 50cc's ? Oh dear. Yes, this video was real helpfull... i stick with big four bikes. Honda and Kawa for the moment.

Bone dry!! 120 year in business, 120 years that the copy from other brands and invented NOTHING themselve... HD is a cult brand, but worthless when it comes to reliability. Dailey Problemson. I watch HD video's because the owners come to me when they have shit like this. I owned a FXRC 80ci. Their only reliable engine and with a lot made in Japan parts. They better drop that arrogance and call Porsche again (V Rod) or let the big four manage their production.

My thought exactly! My 2010 Road King fogged up, so does my 2019 Sport Glide. Not one of my Honda's, Kawasaki's or Yamaha's EVER had this problem. Cheese & Rice, why does HD not know how to build a motorcycle speedometer properly!? 🙄
