‘Did you draw your ‘photo realistic’ from a blank canvas in Procreate? - They are truly fantastic- and I’m amazed this was possible in Procreate!!

Yes, Mathew. Everything is from a blabk canvas in Prpcreate. But in this video, the subject is not the same as the one in the thumbnail. Here, I drew an "8 ball". Thank you for your kind words. 🙂

This is exactly the explanation of shading I’ve been looking for, so thank you. The light source gfx is particularly helpful, but THE SHADOW WITH THE GAUSSIAN BLUR. I’ve never thought of doing that, and it’s great. (I’m a cartoonist, not a fine artist! But I’m working on doing more than just halftones)

I haven't read any book about shading, but there is one that I can recommend if you like. It's called Shading Techniques by Catherine Holmes. I hope that helps. 🙂

Your video is based on an object with a smooth reflective surface where the object shows many forms of light and shadows. You tell the viewer each area of light and shadows on the reflective ball at the beginning of the video. However, Your 8 ball exercise doesn’t match the light and shadows reflective ball at the beginning of the video. The light above your 8 ball and the text 8 makes your ball look like it has an indent in the ball. If the ball was full and rounded it would have a shine above like the ball at the beginning of your video. Your 8 ball setting is a bright white. The surface that the ball sits on would reflect onto the ball giving the reflected light to your ball and the reflected light would lighten the casting shadow. The 8 ball is reflective and in a white setting, majority of the ball would be bright and the only dark shadow would be an occlusion shadow under the ball. The only free hand shading you gave the viewer is around the top of the ball, then other shading was a blurring effect.

Thanks for your thoughtful feedback. This tutorial doesn't teach you to draw the exact same reflective grey sphere at the beginning of the video, but instead, it teaches you the fundamentals behind the principles of shading. Just like understanding that reflection reacts differently in various cases, where it is visible in a glossy or highly reflective material. In this example, the color white (background) doesn't necessarily need to be always reflective. Thus, the reflection of the eight ball that you were looking for doesn't exist in this example. I hope this explains, and please do send us some samples of your work so we can help each other to be better at our crafts. 🙂
