The swing head was a technique that really became popular back in 2010 when Tommy Biffle won a major tournament on the gene larew hard head.
This was a technique that not many had head about at the time and it really started a whole new category of lures known as the swing head.
Although most people know about a wobble head it seems that a lot of guys still don't fish this technique.
BassFishingHQ is dedicated to teaching people how to catch more and bigger bass. I will go over different bass fishing tips & techniques that will put more fish in the boat or on the shore. Whether you are just starting out or a seasoned tournament angler, my goal is to help you catch more bass.

Actually started making my own swing heads. With split rings and tear drop weights. Attach the split ring to the hook eye, then the weight.

Hard to beat the ole original “Biffle Bug” for this. Another solid one is the strike king Rage Bug

Great video. Iv'e been using this technique for several years and there has been many additional good alternative bait additions available in addition to the Biffle Bug since. Your point made of altering the retrieve to suit the mood of the fish is the most important to me. Thanks Again

I was at Toledo Bend a couple of years ago and we were catching fish on the 8x and 10x crankbaits and we found a huge school of big fish in deep timber. We started loosing our crankbaits and those things are expensive, so I decided to try something. I tied on a 1 ounce swing head with a 5/0 hook and put a 4.5 inch Kitech swimbait on that was pretty close to the color crankbait we were using and just started hammering the big fish. I could fish it slower and not get hung up. I could have made a killing with the 5 fish total I had that day if it would have been a tournament...but it wasn't. All I got was some great pictures lol

Great video topic. I will definitely apply some of these tips to how I fish this going forward. I have tried fishing this technique for several years with very little success. I have several compartments in my tackle arsenal dedicated to swing heads, but just haven't had much success. Not sure if its because I haven't been around fish, or if I am using the wrong baits to pair with a swing head or just fishing the wrong time of year. Is there a time of year that this technique works better than other times of year? And is there a depth limit where beyond a certain depth of water, you are better off switching to a different technique? Thanks

I was introduced to this technique by Tactical Bassin. Tim just put out a tips video where he used a high float stick bait. I started fishing it a couple days ago, and have caught largemouth everyday in extreme tough conditions. The largest have been running from a wacky worm due to extremely clear water.

The biggest problem with the football jig or the swing head is the way the line comes in constant contact with the hard bottom causing line breakage. But the other point is the Levage the fish has in throwing the jig because of the football design, but what do I know after fishing football jigs for 30 years on the Colorado River.

I'm being to think KZreadr videos tent to confuse people more then they are all ready confused I've caught 10 pounders on a hard head by just dragging it and I use a 4 inch bait on the back I feel like some of these videos tend to mislead people for example braided line everyone but one person will tell you not to use it for crankbaits but yet David fritts is using 10 test braid now and so many people are using a mh rods for square bills but Rick clunn uses a heavy action glass rod now I tend to listen to them and put up there set up and make them work for me oh by the way Tommy biffle uses a flipping stick with him hard head set up I'm fishing there's no right or wrong way to fish 90% of the lures out there I feel like but these are my options

Mistake #4 u talk about a chatter bait, once they bit they have it. I disagree, in fact most mistakes with a chatter bait are made at that point. If u start using a medium action cranking rod while fishing a chatter bait, I guarantee u will land way more fish.

  • @maddogbray2419

Personally my preference with a swing head is not to get a wide gap hook because the bait can tilt to one side and it takes a lot of the action away so I take the ewg off and use a normal weedless worm hook
