Stop Dressing Your Age & Do This Instead | Fashion Over 40 2021
The idea of dressing your age is outdated and in in today's video I’m going to tell you why and what you should be doing instead.I regularly get asked whether a particular fashion trend or clothing item can be worn at a certain age so I thought now was a great time to share how I answer this question. I always believe that the clothes that look and feel best the best on you have more to do with your body, lifestyle, style preference and confidence than the year you were born. That doesn’t mean your fashion choices don’t change as your body and lifestyle change - it just means your personal style may change. So in today’s episode I’m sharing some style secrets that have helped with my style evolution and might just help you too. I'd love to hear if you have any style secrets to dressing at any age in the comments below and as always thanks for watching and I'll see you in the next upload.

I honestly don’t believe we should be slaves to fashion and the latest styles. It’s about feeling confident, comfortable and true to yourself. Any pieces which you are drawn to and that reflect your personality will make you hold your head up high and feel your best. The most wonderful thing about fashion is there’s something out there for everyone and that’s just great.

I've been working on this with a counselor and her advice to me was to wear those bold quirky pieces and take a few walks around the block to "desensitize" myself and then becoming more brave about how I dress. I've been hiding my quirky style for years and now at 60 pushing myself finally! Her advice to address comments from people is to just respond by saying, "I love it!"

I totally agree with you! The concept of dressing your age is confusing to me. Who gets to decide what’s appropriate for me? Your lifestyle, your personal style and preference should be your primary guide on what to wear. I know longer desire to chase trends like many younger women and I don’t want to look like mutton dressed as lamb, but I don’t want to look dowdy either. The older I get (I’m 62) the more I trust my own instincts.

Honestly, as a sixty one year old, I find that while Paulina sends out positive messages, she sets the bar too high for me. I'm fit and healthy, but I could not achieve her shape--partly genetics, partly because it's not where I would put my energy. I'm at the point where I'm comfortable in my skin and don't need to compete with younger women for "the male gaze." Don't get me wrong, I do look put together and I still get looks (men do flirt with me but sometimes my son's have to point it out to me as I'm oblivious) but it's not something I try for.

Paulina isn't "setting the bar too high," unless you're comparing yourself to her. Her whole message is to simply take pride in your appearance regardless of age, weight or looks, just do what you can to take care of yourself.

It’s great to see someone like Paulina looking great in her 50s. However, not everyone has enjoyed her lifestyle. She started out having won the genetic lottery. Growing up, I (and so many others) compared ourselves to models and celebrities and not appreciating the bodies we had. At 68, I do not need to go back into that mindset. I’m all for dressing the in a way you feel great, and if you have a great figure, show it off! Don’t feel you have to be a supermodel and deprive yourself of the joy of who you are and what you look like now!

It makes me angry that women over 50 are largely invisible in many areas of our society. The bar has been if men are not attracted to you, you are no longer important. I love Paulina's message. But also let's e real- she's playing up the fact that she still is attractive (which she is and that's great!). We are invaluable regardless! Feeling sexy is feeling confident-it's about us doing and wearing what we love! xx

  • @1suitcasesal

    @1suitcasesal

That bar and pushing us into being invisible is set by old men who look in their mirrors and have the nerve to visualize themselves as a 25 yr old. It's silly! Who needs them when there are so many young free thinking men around. They want us to be forgotten so forget them. I'm not gorgeous but I feel I was my most attractive at age 55. Since then younger men have been chasing me. A 29 yr old wanted to marry me when I was 63. A 19 yr old wanted to have sex with me - no was my answer. I had a 7 year relationship with a man who was good to me and 32 yrs younger than me. Recently a 32 yr old man wanted to have a relationship with me. Why be " conventional " ( whatever that is ) when you can have fun?

Paulina, beautiful as she is, even suffers from being dismissed. She was a supermodel and was married to a rocker from The Cars. He treated her like she was invisible after a certain age, and so I guess if you were ever in that league, you lose status with age too. She's written about being unable to find a partner. She doesn't want to be sexless...Good for her.

Love the positive message from Paulina or at least the way I interpreted it. I'm 51 and I'm always looking for insipiration from other women my age or older who are aging with strength, wisdom, and grace. I do take care of my physical and mental health and I feel that I feel stronger and more flexible than when I was in my 20s or 30s. However, I do c how some people may interpret messages from beautiful people like Paulina to mean that every women should age that way. What I have noticed is that we tend to be very hard on ourselves and on other women. When we see someone showing their age, we judge them for showing their wrinkles, but if we see them looking as if they have gotten a lot of procedures done, we also judge them for that. I honestly hate hearing the phrase "she's aging well" or "she's not aging well". What does that even mean? By whose standards? My standards would be that the person has a great health, continues to be energetic and flexible, continues her personal growth by becoming a kinder, and wiser individual who contributes in a positive way to others. Thank you for your videos and I particularly love this type of content.

I remember Paulina! She was a supermodel when I was growing up. I love seeing familiar, older faces. It’s about time the media recognized that yes, people do get older and should be celebrated. Considering the alternative...well, that’s a reason to celebrate! 🎉🎊 To dismiss the aging population is to ignore an active, well-paid, decisive segment of the population. I don’t know about you, but I take notice of companies who ignore my demographic. Sorry, my dollars don’t support those companies.

These companies forget our demographic and we're the ones with income to spend on clothes.

I firmly believe that you should wear what makes you feel great and bring out your best features/skin tone, etc. I'm 45 and decided to stop dying my hair, to transition (cold turkey) to silver. I was seriously worried that my wardrobe will not suit my natural hair colour. 6 months into this, I not only started loving my new hair colour, but coupled with a great haircut, and being the kind of person who works out and looks after herself, my wardrobe adapted to my new silver sparkles, in fact many pieces, especially the colourful ones, look even better now than they did when my hair was dark 😁 be your authentic self, everything else will fall into place.

Paulina has always been a stunner and I love the message of that ad campaign. It's fun and a massive "up yours" to the media's negativity and pressure on women. I do think it's so odd that "over 40" is "older"...I'm 43 and have come full circle to the person I wish I'd been in my 20s! I'm lucky my mum always encouraged me to push the envelope with my clothing style, and I'm not planning to stop. But I think the BEST investment women of any age can do is get their colours analysed. If you wear your colours you'll look incredible. :)

I'm glad that I found your channel. I'm 64, and I am just beginning to live! I left teaching and will be embarking on a real estate agent career in another state, ready to work full time, work smart, work hard, and do it all in 4-inch stiletto heels. As I've aged, I have not found that I am invisible to men or women; it is nice to be appreciated, since I take care of myself, but I don't allow others to define my worth. Being older means that I define my own worth! As for style, I chose chic designs and elegance from the inside out: elegance starts with kindness, humility, patience, and selflessness. Thank you for your sage advice!

I love the lady in the video! It's easy to focus solely on the changes in our bodies as we age. Those are inevitable and can be very frustrating, however there are great things about aging too and we should focus more on those. I have more confidence now that I'm older, I have a much lower tolerance for b.s., and I have nothing left to prove anymore. I'm happy to let the younger ladies strut around in uncomfortable sky high heels these days. I work with retirees in my job and I can tell you that aging is not for the faint of heart. It takes courage, and strength and fortitude. I love beautiful women like the lady in the video, bloggers like you, and other "older" women who still make the effort to look beautiful and don't fall into frumpville. You all inspire me!

O think if you have the body to pull off bodycon more power to you. As for low rise ,hip hugger ugh I don't think they flatter anyone and no matter your shape you still feel like your pants are falling down lol didn't like them in the 70s or the 90s and still hate them.

I love Paulina ! Always thought she was beautiful and even more beautiful now! For me, I have been lately having a hard time at the aging process. I’m 63 years old. I don’t mind a few wrinkles here and there. It’s the sagging skin that really bothers me. I work out 4 to 5 times a week. I lift weights daily, nothing seems to help the sagging skin. How ever I will keep continuing to work out! I think, we are the worst critics of ourselves! My husband tells me I look great! Always love watching your Channel! Thank you!😍

I just turned 50 and work out 5 days a week and the undersides of my arms are just impossible to tone, it’s so frustrating. My shoulders and biceps look good though and I’m strong. We do what we can! Weight work is important for the bones.

I just love Paulina and though she was born tall and beautiful, which I am not, she still inspires me to be my very best. At 61, I still wear my hair long in spite of what others are saying about hair and old ladies keeping it short, I wear my hair just like hers in beautiful updoes or youthfully attached, wearing gorgeous large or small earrings depending on the occasion. It is what suits me best. I am glad I found your channel as it gives me more ideas but others I can let go. Thank you.

I find as I grow older (67 next month) I care less about how I should dress. I love clothes and fashion and enjoy feeling happy in things I put together and not try to run with every new trend. I love classic, timeless, romantic, boho style but some days I will go with a more edgy look just because. I am not in the same mood every day so I like to change my style as I want. To me the biggest rule I follow as I age is to avoid showing to much of anything sagging or bagging. My shorts have gotten longer, the midriff remains covered and I do not show too much skin.

I can relate to this - I wear short things around the house when it's hot, but cover up a little when I'm out and about. I've always loved boho style and longer, flowy skirts and dresses are great, but I too love an edgy, almost androgynous look. Even with very short hair I can still wear feminine things (and pretty earrings). I'm 66 now and realise my style is dependent on mood also - I think of it as my "chameleon" style.

I simply do not believe women of a certain age should be ALLOWED to do anything. You should feel empowered to present the YOU that YOU want to present to the world. My style is an expression of my perception of self and not up for debate or deliberation with anyone else.

Love Paulina. She continues to be beautiful and is so elegant. I liked this video. I am 66 and love to wear stylish clothes, even though I am no longer at work. I have become more casual, but I love my clothes and I am a big “boot girl”. I don’t want to dress like a little old lady! My mom, who reached the great age of 93, was buried in her skinny jeans and favourite cashmere sweater. I am paring down my wardrobe because I don’t have to dress for work anymore. I do miss picking up new Michael Kors and Joseph Ribkoff dresses. Oh well! Less is more! I am shopping my closet a lot more and have a list. Things I need and things that need replacing from wear. Thanks for your insight!

I always love your videos and the perspectives you explore with fashion from a time in life I relate to. I loved the message in the add. I just turned 59, apparently I don’t look or act my age, ( according to others) which intrigues me because I look and act exactly like the 59 year old me. I should know, I’m the ultimate authority on being me! 😂 I think it’s the relentless compare and contrast thing that does us all in! I’m not 20, nor would I want to be. I was so unsure and lost at that age, struggling to discover who I have now become. I believe the biggest challenge in life is to be YOURSELF! It is the hardest, yet most rewarding challenge in life and really the point of being the unique person each of us is. I’ve learnt not to shy away from what makes me stand out, makes me different, makes me, me! I love to dress in lots of styles, sometimes boho, glamorous, tomboy, sexy, corporate, ultimately these clothes are the wrapping, we are the contents, we are the gift to the world that only we can be.❤️

LOVE Paulina & that ad! We can look good at any age as long as we take care of ourselves. It's important to find ones' style. I agree, be ruthless, rather keep a few good pieces, mix & match. Capsule wardrobe, neutrals with a particular pop of color works best for me & yes i must be comfortable. Style with comfort! This thing of being invisible at a certain age is nonsense!

At 74 I am my most relaxed, the most at home in my body I have ever been, the sexiest I have ever been...or so says my husband of 40 yrs. When I was in my 20s I was SO shy and self critical. I was uncomfortable with my face and my body..I saw flaws...others seemed not to. I focused on my brain...stuffing it...spent ten years getting a PhD becoming a clinical psychologist and professor mainly to help others. I LOVED my career. I hated being thought of as cute or pretty or whatever. I had to work at NOT looking so cheerleader cute...5ft 4in hourglass figure well hidden in suits.I so wished then I had a sharper more androgenous look..I whacked off my hair to look more serious. Only in my 60s did I let my hair grow and became comfortable showing I had a waist and still an hourglass figure. I dont dress overtly sexy, but it is there and I dont wear oversize clothes that swamp me to hide it, though that is the style now. I have matured as has my wardrobe, I have a well curated carefully selected wardrobe of classic clothes that do not date quickly...many will.never date...this allows me to focus on quality when I replace an item savoring my wardrobe as well as the rest of life.

This is a wonderful video! 👍 Love the fact that you agree with me! 🥰 Some time ago my mother-in-law told me "They say women your age shouldnt be wearing mini skirts", to which I replied, "I never do what "they" tell me"! The society keeps putting this strains on us since birth and rarely "they" have similar limitations for men... It's time we take our fashion preferences into our own hand and dress for our mental and physical well-being..... Thanks very much for this inspiring video! ❤️❤️🙏 And quite honestly, I look better and feel better about myself now than any other decade of my life! 😃

Paulina is the bomb! She’s been a fave for over 3 decades. For me, I don’t like midriff/crop tops (showing the skin) on older women no matter how ‘tiny’ you are. Some of the cutout summer dresses this year fall into that category (showing a lot of back for example), great with a little cardi or denim jacket, but you’re limited if you get hot and don’t want to take it off and reveal too much.
