Build Bigger Delts: Proper Lateral Raise Form
Most people don't know this, but the single largest muscle group on your upper body by volume is not your chest, lats or traps - it's actually your shoulders. Building wider delts will not only have the biggest impact in terms of giving your upper body a more powerful look, but it'll also create the illusion of a smaller waistline as well in order to accentuate the v-taper. So, your shoulder workouts are definitely an area you want to fully dial in, especially when it comes to the lateral delt since that's the one that'll benefit most from direct isolated work. In this video today I'm covering 8 common shoulder training mistakes people make on lateral raises (whether it's a dumbbell lateral raise or cable lateral raise) that reduce tension on the side delts and increase stress on the shoulder joint. Give these a try during your next delt workout and you'll definitely notice the difference.

Dumbbell lateral raises are stupid in general. From a physics perspective they're a trap exercise and hardly train the delts. The force needs to come perpendicular like a cable or you really aren't doing anything but destroying your rotator cuff
This is insane quality in a youtube video. Not just saying what NOT to do, but rather simply telling us what's wrong and then showing how to do it right. PLEASE do this for more excercises! Thanks Sean

I have bad memory so..
This guy has helped me to get started correctly. I am 70 years old morbidly obese and was nearly bed ridden 3 months ago. I am lifting light but lifting right. No injuries and steady progress from 15 pound dumbell to 25 pound dumbell shoulder/arms/chest movement which performed standing has given me back my legs and some core strength. This next year should be very rewarding if I continue at this pace and my dietary changes kick in. I am beginning to do squats and other leg work and even some cardio. His approach has me actually looking forward to workouts as they leave me feeling better instead of broken. I got his workout/nutrition plan only to discover I was in such bad condition I couldn't follow it. I expect that to change in the next 3 months. This is a major transformation from spending my days in bed or in a chair barely able to complete normal daily tasks.
@esmee6308

You can do this! Not quite the same age but I was also bed-ridden when I started and I don't think I could follow the programs I follow now back then. So much has changed, not just in a sense of personal growth in adherance but just things becoming easier, more rewarding as well as knowing how much it has given me already.

@@esmee6308 I expect to be able to follow the plan in the next few weeks. I am just now able to get to the floor and get back to standing by myself. Weight training in the past has only gone until I get something hurt and then I quit. I am learning how to prevent damage and injury and the only is pain is this proper stiffness from a good workout. The endorphin effect makes the workouts pure pleasure.

When I first started doing lateral raises at the gym, I naturally did them at a 45° like Sean suggests. I didn't even notice, that was just the natural way I'd lift my arms using my shoulders. But a trainer saw me, and said that I should have my arms completely to the side, since these are "lateral" raises. I did that and the weights felt instantly heavier so I thought he must be right and I didn't want to "cheat" by making it easier.

Personally, I always struggled feeling my side delts. Even if you applie every tip possibly immaginable, sometimes I fell them and get a good pump (sign of a effective training), sometimes not. Sean I appreciate what you do. I signed up to your program three days ago so I will be doing my second workout today. I have other friends that are making that post 40 push for better health and have been turning them on to you. Thanos again for cutting through the BS. Edit I have a bad rotator cuff due to years of drywall as a skinny guy and the raised pinkie probably would have destroyed it. It hurt so bad I didn't try rep 2 and began isolating surrounding muscles until I felt I was capable. Without raising the pinkie, there is minor discomfort as I approach failure but it doesn't hurt the next day. My standard pain has been dropping rapidly over the last month of working out. With your comprehensive guide I feel like I can continue to perform in my career for years to come.
