Stock 572xp vs ported 372xp. How good have modern saws gotten?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Just for the fun of it I ran my ported 372xp iron saw and a stock 572xp back to back. Are they close in power? which one do I like best?
thanks for watching!!

I’ve been running my 572 with velocity stack and a ported muffler for over a year. Did the mods within days of first starting her. She runs a 32 in bar with a hand filed chisel chain and it will keep up with a 500i with similar mods all day. I absolutely love my 572. Such a good saw

I bought a 372 in a pawnshop nearly ten years ago. Amazingly, it was displayed with a slew of small homeowner saws and listed for $200! I guess they didn't know what they had... Anyway, this is a great saw and I love it! I do a lot of cutting in big hard wood including locust. This saw is a wood-eater.

Could not agree more about a 372 as a starting point. Really think you ran into what I did with the full wrap & 572. The bucking spike mod I did on the OEM bucking spike that comes with the full wrap kit changed the entire perception. That Bucking Spike Stock would bind the chain so I had to finesse a bit going into that smaller diameter wood ( less than 24 inch dia ). My "ported" 372 was way stronger in impression at first, but after the bucking spike mod I could just hog into the wood with my "Tweaked" 572....and then my cookie times dropped on the 572 . Of course mine is tweaked with a muffler mod and compression increase, but not worrying about stalling the chain in that smaller wood allowed me to be way more aggressive in the initial cut bucking and felling. Something to consider :)

Yeah; i went from Dolmar to the 572. You are spot on about the torque characteristic of the 572. If the chain was too aggressive it would fall on its face…. IMO, it was disappointing. I had mine ported and I asked the guy to focus on the torque over HP. Turned it into the saw I wanted…. I’ve cut a bunch of Ash w/ a 32” bar w/ full house chain no problem now… I’ve also had the Autotune firmware updated which I think helped a bit. Cut a bunch of Oak with it (24” b/c) and it goes through it easy…

I put the 24 inch chain off my 550 on it and didnt cut any faster in the buck because of chainspeed and rakers but it doesn't bog down no matter how much you lean on it so im excited to try a 32-36 inch bar

Both great, still trying to get used to these new hipster doo-dad saws. I always reach for my 372's first as well but the 572 is actually faster there but has much more narrow power band so the 372 'feels' better due to the more forgiving power band.

I run it with a 24 skip tooth and 3/8s sprocket ...my spare is a 372xp with a 28 bar and same chain 3/8s skip tooth . For bigger stuff I will run the 372 but hard to beat the 572 for smooth ..love it..thanks for the informative video . Power saws are fun! I went from running an 064 and a ms461 to a 572xp, the 572 felt really smooth and inviting as I broke it in on the firewood pile but when I took it to the woods to harvest hard maple, and red oak I really missed the torque of the 064, and 461. 5 years later and having run most of the 5 series, the 572 has been the best of those in terms of reliability and overall cost to run, the 592 the worst, which brings me to the moment when I was driving back from the dealer after having the 592 "fixed" for the umpteenth time I realized that saw was not fun, here set a saw I was so excited about in the beginning and in very short order I was having to force myself to take it out and cut with it. Yes it was a new saw with a warranty but I felt powerless to fix it myself, it has taken every bit of self constraint not to tear that saw apart and build it better or run over with my skidder. I have several friends that make a living with a saw that share the same experiences with other new model saws both Stihl and Husky. The 372xp is a saw one can easily build and grow with, it's popularity speaks to that. (Keep building it Husqvarna!) A properly sharpened chain is key always, but especially with the 572xp and also the Stihl ms462. Porting and muffler mods certainly help, they are both good saws but lack that certain appeal one gets from building and tuning a saw themselves, the journey of building, improving, feeling how a saw responds to you tuning the carb. That my friend will always be hard to trump in a side by side comparison for those that have experienced it. No doubt future generations will be telling this same story, comparing their new models to our current ones. The new saws have a place I gather, perhaps it is that they make one appreciate the virtues of the older ones. Whichever path you choose have fun with it.

Nice video, I'm from Sweden and I find the cultural differences very amusing when it comes to running these saws. You Americans always seem to want to run hysterically long bars compared to how we run them in their home country. Limbing with a 24 inch bar on 70cc saw makes everybody laugh here, I and many others do it with a 13-15 inch bar on a 346/550, and I wouldn't even consider running a longer bar than 20 inches on my 372/572. And you seem to prefer the XP over the XPG, here in Sweden the dealerships look at you with a strange face if you want the XP over the XPG. Anyway, nice video and nice saws!

Starts in -40° temps and +30° in the summer, everytime. I’ve been using it to rough cut green 2x6x12ft spruce planks….and it does the job without complaint. I agree, the 5 series have come a long way in vibration mitigation. they are firm but smooth…no numb fingers after a pickup load of wood. cheers from northern BC!

Hi Tinman, nice comparison of two great saws. I know exactly what your experiencing with your 572 in regards to the torque. That was my only complaint with mine. I developed a pipe that took care of the lack of torque issue. These 572's will respond like the Dolmar's when you pipe them and get it right. I never had any luck with the common muffler mods you see done with the OEM muffler on the 572. Those mods get the heat out but don't add any power in my experience. Walts bucking spike mod does make working with the 572 more enjoyable.

I don't understand why Husky went with a long-stroke/small-bore, sealed crank bearings, one-piece muffler design choice. The weight is what gets me... Remember when the Stihl 461 came out and all the 372xp guys laughed at it for its size and weight? It was bastardized as being "bloated" or "chubby" and the power increase is irrelevant to the weight and handling of a 70cc class saw? Strange that now those same 372xp guys are suddenly oddly quiet about the reality of the 572 compared to the 462. Heck, even the 500i is lighter and its in a larger displacement class. Husqvarna really dropped the ball with the 572. Its still a phenomenal machine. I'm in no way implying that it isn't. But when compared to its predecessor, and its current competition... Ouch. What happened?
