Stirling engine trickle charging 12V battery.

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Shows my engine charging a 12V SLA. Approx 100ma into a 12.8V battery, 1.28 watts, max recorded was around 1.8 W. The power output is still quite poor, I hope I can get more out of it. I found two small air leaks that had developed when the engine was heated, which might make a difference when fixed.

It's enough to maintain a charge, but it's not really useful. The title is not really misleading, it is charging a battery in the video, but I've changed it to trickle charging a 12V battery, which is more accurate.

It would, and I intend to power it from that when it's working well. Propane/butane is much more convenient whilst testing though, just turn the dial and light the flame, and turn it off when you're done.

Congratulations friend! It really is not easy to get a good power. Cause I'm having the same difficulty you! But your engine has a very good power. Your video made it very clear its real power. How many rpm your engine reaches when not connected to the generator?

I found the leaks near the edge of the wood where the upright sections are. It was leaking through the screw holes. The diaphragm is very strong in this one (motorbike inner tube) , I don't see it developing any holes for a long time.

Ah, I'm in the UK. Thanks for the offer though. I've just bought one off ebay to try, I'll see how it goes when it arrives.

I will definitely try a stepper some time. I haven't found one the right size yet, and I don't have any suitable ones in my junk pile.

I'm using stainless steel wool in this engine, it's fairly coarse. It's seems impossible to get fine grade Stainless steel wool here in the UK. Everywhere I've tried it's sold as "fine" but it's nothing of the sort, pretty coarse. The wool seems to be absolutely crucial in these engines, both how fine it is and how loosely it's packed.

I felt bad after making this comment I thought that my battery maintainer uses only one amp and that is more than you list here in the description. Anyway I think this is a cool project.

Your motor is looking pretty good, and that's an interesting generator you've built, there. Looks like you are loosing some energy to the out-of-balance flywheel. Have you tried using a stepper motor as a generator? They make pretty efficient generators. You just need an array of diodes to rectify the output. At least it would be perfectly balanced and the magnets would be closer to the coils. You can find stepper motors in lots of discarded electronics, like printers.

'Very' kewl :3 I wish I could get my engines to work that well =[ Would you say the most important thing for a well working engine would be the heat source, or how well it's put together?

Nice work as usual. How much time does it take to charge completely the battery? And where do you find the leaks? In the diaphragm, or in the cylinders connection with the wood? Congratulations again!

It is difficult to get anything useful out of a DIY Stirling like this. The unloaded RPM was around 700RPM. Thanks.

You could try a pancake motor from a VCR. They make pretty good generators.

Does the steel wood of the displacement piston act as an insulator? does air flow through it or around it? have you tried other materials such as rock wool? what are the advantages of building a generator from scratch? how much waste heat do you have in the water? have you figured the volume of water and temperature rise in a set period of time?

Try dropping 1/2 cubic cm into heating room. Its power will incrise. I followed the 1930 Malone patent. I tested it. My pystons material is the usual steel. For your generator witch copper wire and quantity do consume?

How big of a stepper do you want? Are you in the United States? I'd consider shipping you one, if I have the right one in my junk box and you're in the U.S.A. I disassemble a lot of large printers.

That looks like a 7 amp hour (Ah) battery so theoretically it should take 7Ah/0.1Ah=70hours.

very coooool, but Ithink that you shoud fix your fly wheel (that shaking is a loss of energy) and do not try to use an electric motor , I think that the pully+belt will increase the friction
