    Originally for the album the dream of blue turtles he wanted to record this song with a Moscow orchestra, yet politics didn't let him do it, so in a sense it is a dream come true!

    This was a hit in the 1980s at the height of the Cold War with Russia. I was only 13 years old. I remember the UK government sent out a pamphlet to every household telling us what to do in a nuclear war. We were weeks away from World War 3 with Russia and nuclear destruction. Even my local hospital had a genuine road sign saying "Nuclear Free Zone"

    I remember during the mid 80s when this song came out and the US and Russia were constantly playing against each other. STING sang this at the Grammys and it ended in a standing ovation from the crowd....

    You are so right. There are new generations who've no idea what this song really means because they did not go through that time. My dad was a senior official in the Pentagon in the early-mid 80s and he told my sister and I that we did not need an evacuation plan because we would not survive the first missiles. I think I was 10 at the time. Quite sobering.

Those are Igor Kirillov and Anna Shatilova, the news anchors, the true legends of the Soviet TV (news program "Time").     I had never heard this song before I saw him perform it live at the Grammys in '86. It still makes me fell like that teenager who had to make a diorama of a fall out shelter in middle school. Scared it could all end in a flash of light and heat.

    Thats one thing I hope the Y's and Z's never have to experience, the genuine fear that many of us X's and Boomers had as kids that we might not get to grow up to be adults because the actual adults couldnt be trusted not to nuke the planet into ash.     This comment was written on 28th February 2022. Russia has invaded the Ukraine and the President of Russia has threatened the west with the use of nuclear weapons. This song was was written in 1984 and released in 1985 and is now more relevant than ever before. If you are reading this in the future and we survived this period, just be grateful of your life.

    It is now 12.03.2022 , Ukraine is still fighting, refugees are hosted by neighboring countries, civilians were not created safe passages to get out from certain cities. Red cross and various associations are raising founds and trying to send supplies into Ukraine. Sanctions against Russia have been imposed with no outcome and a total number of 4 failed negotiations have been held so far. Let’s hope we can go back to read these comments in the future. Slava Ukraina !

    Ich schreibe diesen Kommentar am 16. März 2022. Die Nato hat im Jahr 2014 eine Faschisten Regierung in der Ukraine aufgestellt, Die Linke in Deutschland hat es sogar im Bundestag kritisiert. Die Faschisten haben angefangen im östlichen, überwiegend russischen, Teil der Ukraine die Menschen zu mishandeln und zu vertreiben, ebenso die Nato osterweiterung die eine gebrochenes versprechen des Westens waren. Und trotzdem fallen hier alle wieder auf "Wir-sind-die-guten" propaganda rein.. Die Russen lieben ihre Kinder da bin ich mir sicher, um Westen kommt mir da eher immer mehr Zweifel.

    The song touched me deeply in the 80'ies, but it's still an actual topic. The people of Russia are the same humans as we are in all other parts of the world. I hope that we ALL can live one day in real peace together on our beloved planet earth. There is NO reason to kill each other because of might, religion, money....

    I'm french and I listen this song all the day for the memory of Ukrainians and Russians who have been killed... This war should never have to start.. My ex-girlfriend and her family are russian, they tried to explain me the culture, the history of Russian people and I fall in love of your nation... But for now, I cant help myself to cry when I see and when I listen " the special operation " in my TV. I would like to say a last thing : я люблю вас... like a human, not like a president ❤️

    That is awful shit. I'm really sorry for all, that my government did. There are no excuses for that. But Russia is not liberal France. We have quite more issues, related with protests. I hope, one day we will back as democratic, friendly and peaceful country. Stay strong!

    +Sergio Skv From the Lieutenant Kije Suite, I think it is called in English. Prokofiev is a wonderful composer, but so are many other great Russian composers as well.

    Toll, wie sehr sich Stings Gesangstechnik verändert hat. Man höre sich die erste Aufnahme dieses Songs an und direkt danach dieses hier. Er singt jetzt viel voller, mit weniger Druck in der Stimme. Ich liebe es!
