Very interesting chord progressions on The Last Ship Home. That is not an easy song to play. I have a feeling this interview was rather early in the morning as Sting seems just a bit groggy. Point being, is that he is so seasoned that even in the morning he's able to pull off this song both instrumentally and vocally, really without any reverb or anything. Impressive.

Great interview George, its great to see talking points beyond the typical script. Sting is a classic among the artist's of the day. To hear him speak about his feelings as a human being, sheds light of the soul he bears when writing and performing his music. True substance behind the man, who has given so much of himself, to the world to enjoy. Thank you

Problem is he's churned the same basic narrative out for the last forty years. I could write a Sting interview down before he gave it and get 80% correct. If you are English and know the area he came from, it's actually quite annoying and insulting. His biggest problem has always been the need to SHOW that he's intelligent , which actually works against him. He never lets it just become apparent to the listener through casual discovery.

Interesting that Halford and the Priest lads, Ozzy and Sabbath's gang, also came from industrial England and only Sting didn't go metal but went reggae and punk instead. I guess that's from being a port town urchin. I wish I'd 'escaped' as he said he did. Had I had the confidence to heed the exhortations coming thru a fone line, from a Toronto music magazine publisher, telling me: "DUDE! You HAVE to move to Toronto! Your music could be huge!", who knows where my life would have went? Vs. this ditch....

I was learning to play drums to The Police when I was 9 in the 70's and I have great respect for Sting musically.. but I think he's a bully and a conceited, arrogant man. @Dissonant Chords. You don't need a point to make a point, you need evidence. There is substantial to support my claim. Denial? No. I've seen The Police 6 times and Sting 7. I admire his voice as one of the best ever in pop music. His writing equally so. Jealousy? What of? His success- didn't mention that as it's truly deserved. His wealth? No. the same and I'm content. After the Beatles they were in the prime the world's biggest band. Evidence? Andy said in his book One Train Later by the time they made 'Zenyatta Mondatta' he and Stewart were pissed off that Sting didn't see them as writers or even collaborative musicians- add to that he wouldn't accept some of their songs which they felt deserved a place on the album as part of a band. Andy recorded the instrumental 'Behind My Camel.'The next day, Sting literally buried the tape in the grounds of Montserrat as he refused to include it on the album. That's some ego and insult. Yep he was the writer, singer, front man- but The Police ARE the sum of the parts. Eventually it went on and won a Grammy for instrumental of the year. Both he and Stewart complained that the demo's for every song on the album were almost pre-recorded songs without asking or needing their input. While Sting wrote the chords for' Every Breath You take' it was Andy who came up with the picking arrangement of the chord sequence which is instantly identifiable as the hook of the song. He got no credit or royalty. In the film Certifiable Sting openly mocks Copeland's drumming in rehearsal as they are preparing for the tour. Copeland can't believe the arrogance that the bass player thinks he can tell the drummer how and what to play. Pretty arrogant as Stewart is going for it and trying a fill that he doesn't pull off..but at least he's bringing everything he can to make the song sound better. When touring Japan, Stewart and Andy said they were sick of the fact that Sting's face started to dominate media coverage and the focus moved to 'Sting' and The Police, rather than the sum of the parts. In the film 'Bring On The Night' he berates a reporter for calling him Gordon- his actual name- and says his kids call him Sting, everyone calls him Sting..which reminded me of John Lennon saying of Dylan 'Dylan is bullshit. Zimmerman's his name.' For some reason in the documentary about the new band, he invited the cameras in to watch his wife give birth. Seems a bit egotistical to make this a part of a film for the public that not many other artists include in their road films. bass player at the time Daryl Jones openly says 'I'm not sure this is a band...' Branford Marsalis is more straight forward- he says 'being around Sting and all these people makes me want a barf!' He says he was put on the earth to be a musician. He scorned the superstar thing, saying he wasn't going to say the right thing, or do the right thing the way Sting does for the persona as it's not what he's all about. I don't need to know he thinks he pioneered tantric sex to listen to or appreciate his music. He was a talented cross country runner but even Townshend said he got sick of seeing Roger Daltrey's chest. I think Sting's self image is incredibly vain and that you don't need to take your shirt off at every opportunity to play bass unless there is ego involved. Peter Gabriel did great work with and for Amnesty without the focus being on him in stark contrast to Sting's save the Amazon rain-forest campaign. Good cause? Sure- but so was Sun City, Bloody Sunday, Do They Know It's Christmas etc. If you want icing on the cake, watch the balls up in his tribute to James Taylor. Absolute monumental fuck up where even his singing suffers because of the fact he's trying to play something not even Cheap Trick would have used for showmanship. Love the music, singing, bass playing and writing. But if you think there's no ego, I think you've been hypnotized from lingering or your Caught between the Scylla and Charibdes or as coked as he was in the 80's during some live performances while throwing orange juice aimed at Stewart Copeland over a young female journalist. kzread.info/dash/bejne/a4xmu5aPc8SZoag.html

@Dissonant Chords It's in Andy Summers book. It's in his film. It was in Stewart Copeland's film. Sting admitted burying the tape himself. These were the other two guys in the band. Sting never disputed it. Sting is seen on film in the certifiable DVD. Can you present any evidence- (not a point) like your poor first sentence last time that supports your opinion. It's not fact, until you present evidence. Nothing further your honour given the defense can't handle the truth, the prosecution rests on the lame defense argument which kicks own goals on every syllable. We don't need the ball. He's won the game for us.

At these sessions, battle lines were deeply drawn over the Summers instrumental "Behind My Camel," which ended up making the album over Sting's extreme objections. "As hard done by as I ever felt in this band, I could always take comfort in the fact that Andy got shafted even worse than I did on that little instrumental," Copeland admitted in 2000. "Sting didn't even bother to play on it. Andy played all the bass and guitars, and I only played on the song because there wasn't anyone else to play drums." "I hated that song so much," laughed Sting, "one day when I was in the studio, I found the tape lying on the table. So I took it around the back of the studio and actually buried it in the garden."

It couldn't be more accurate with like 95% of music listeners actually. Just look at the modern pop charts. Just catchy garbage. He's just speaking truth.

Woesty420 the comment is not about the state of music.. it’s the idea that if a song “doesn’t surprise” him in 4-8 bars. Has nothing to do with new or old music. If a person takes that approach with music he will absolutely miss out on great compositions.
