Part 1( • Stihl MS290 Rebuild: M... ): In this video I start the tear down process. I break down the chainsaw down to the piston to discover that internal engine damage has occurred. The piston is severely damaged.
Part 2( • Stihl MS290 Rebuild: M... ): In this video I complete the remainder of the engine tear down. I find additional components damaged and the culprit of the engine failure. I make a list of what is required to rebuild and place my order.
Part 3( • Stihl MS290 Rebuild: M... ): In this video I install the new complete engine assembly. During assembly I encounter a few minor issues. To finish it off I fire up this newly rebuilt chainsaw!

Your video was both interesting and informative. Continue filming your tutorials showing John Q Public that just because we live in a disposable society doesn't mean that we constantly have to be ripped off by making new purchases or expensive dealer repairs. Its refreshing to see the younger generation rolling up their sleeves and doing it themselves. Keep up the great work youngman!

The threads on the OEM screws for oil pump are coarse and the aftermarket pan takes machine fine threads screws.

I almost screwed up my threads in that stud trying to double nut that... had to get a rotary dremel and cut flat notches for a adjustable wrench 🔧

I ran it for several hours on a Tornado cleanup job. Worked great! I've also used it on several landscape jobs (nothing too strenuous). I'd still like to put it through more before I give it a full stamp of approval, but so far so good. 👍

Unfortunately, the decompression valve failed on last weekend. I put in a new valve but I think it's R.I.P. I definitely got my money's worth though. It's only $30 for a new cylinder head and piston. I'll do a video soon with a teardown to see what was damaged.

Those holes on that bottom plate aren’t threaded. Those screws are basically self tapping screws and make their own threads. I also would have done away with the decompression valve and just put a decompression plug in the hole.

I agree with the plug. We had a decomp valve failure and it fell in the cylinder...
