Part 1 MS290 to MS390 Engine Conversion Swap 46mm to 49mm 56cc to 64.1cc

This MS290 chain saw was donated to Nature's Cadence Farm by a very good friend of the family. The friend asked if I could show how to replace the motor in a video, so I did. I decided if I was going through all of this I was going to " upgrade " I went from a 46mm bore to a 49mm bore (MS390). This is a multi part series that is broken into three sections Part 1: Disassembly , Part 2: Assembly , Part 3: Final assembly and start up.
This process is very similar to MS290 MS310 MS390 029 031 039
The parts in the engine kit were: jug cylinder piston rings wrist pin snap ring connecting rod crank bearing bearings seal seals crank case bolts. Basically a complete engine.

R G you are very welcome. I had a blast pulling the saw down and getting it going again. I have used this saw almost exclusively for the past year and I love it! At first it was a little weak but the more she runs the stronger she feels. I did do a muffler mod and carburetor adjustment after the fact and that really helped. Check out the playlist below, it has the conversion saw running against some of the other saws i have. ~Mr. C. kzread.info/head/PL9e-N4NEgHNugVR3FhAPMhAS23fPoHIW2

@Kennel Von Schwarz & Feuer we are so glad you found the video useful. We are happy to help. This style engine is called a clam shell. As you see the crankcase pan on the bottom of the engine is how the crank is removed from the cylinder. The metal body of the pro level saws is the crankcase which holds the crank and the cylinder is removable. So awesome to hear from someone from Belgium! Happy sawing! ~Mr. C.

The start phase with difficulty and once start when I released the accelerator it stops, I cleaned the carburetor but without result even changing the settings. A person told me it was the piston but I have no way of knowing if it is him, on the ignition side, the spark is very good. I've been looking for engine swap videos for a long time, thanks for sharing this. I have spare Stihl MS 251c-be that had straight gas put in it. I've been wondering if I'd be able to put a larger motor in it in order to run a longer bar, e.g. 22", 24". How would I be able to figure out if this 251 powerhead/frame will accept a larger motor? You mentioned you did some research - what sources did you use?

Shawn F I looked on Amazon and found a Big Bore kit for the MS290 to make it a MS390. I have done some looking around for you on Amazon for handles cases etc. and found the Stihl MS231, 251 are built on the same case. The 251 has the largest cylinder (44mm , 45.6cc ) in that class. The clamshell design limits or nearly eliminates any performance modifications to the cylinder. Hope this helps. Thanks for asking! ~Mr. C.

You really do a great job with the videos, but you should never use an impact on the clutch for removal or assembly. It can shear your flywheel key in your flywheel since it is only aluminum. A new flywheel from Stihl is around $100. Just a little advice for future use.

My 029 finally died and will cost more than a new saw to have fixed by a Stihl shop, so I'm learning how to do the swap as you showed. Question - did you have to re-jet the carb or replace the carb with a larger size for the bigger bore? If so, what carb or jet did you use? thanks

Eric Mueller you present a great question. I researched this topic in depth when I was planning the swap. During my quest for knowledge I found the factory 029 039 MS290 MS310 and MS390 all share the same Stihl part number for the carburetor. For my swap I used the original carburetor (no re jetting) from the MS290 and adjusted accordingly to the new cylinder. One day I will tweak it a little more now that I have a tachometer. Ben G from what I can tell yes. I looked on the one I received and everything looked like it would be fine to do just a top end and piston swap. The reason I went with a new bottom end is I wanted new bearings and seals down there. If you do just the top end be sure to check the bearings and seals for excessive wear that might cause mechanical damage or an air leak that would cause a lean condition. ~Mr. C.

Hot Dogs I have had mixed results with these saws. I own an 029 and two MS290s. The 029 and one MS290 have had serious engine problems. The other MS290 has had no work and always runs well. Be careful of Chinese parts, that's why they're so cheap. Ask around to knowledgeable people for decent brands. The 029 is the earlier version of the 290. Tank assembly is the same for all 3 models as are the rest of the parts. As for those seals there's 2 versions but 1 set has only 1 lip instead of 2. That's a common upgrade of motor size. Since all of these Chinese parts have flooded the market Stihl parts have come down in price to where it's far more attractive to go with those. In my case if a customer wants Chinese parts installed there's no warranty. Call that however you want but I've seen some junk that came from there. Also remember that customer may tell whoever that you put it together with cheap parts. There's a very fine line on being the best mechanic in 3 counties if it turns out ok or the worst SOB if it goes south.

@Darrelle Pickering you have provided very sound advice. I agree, the parts are hit and miss. I have had very good luck with this particular engine in this power head. I really like this saw and rely on it regularly. I have another 029 that got scored badly and needs a rebuild or upgrade to the larger cylinder. I will look into the cost of OEM parts for that build. Thank you for the excellent insight and information. ~Mr. C.

@@NaturesCadenceFarm It's been a lot of years but I saw the 029/039 introduced. The 029 Super turned into the 310. Stihl has played around with cylinder size for a long time as had others but Stihl did it best I think. The 029/290, 310, 039/390 all take the same chassis hence nothing changed except cylinder size. When the 029 came out it used .325 chain & people weren't impressed till someone put 3/8" chain on it. Then they found out it cut great but longevity was gone. Somewhere in there Stihl sent out a SB about the lean settings of the carb from the factory. If those saws came in with 3/8" chain (hazy memory) I think weren't warranted but not sure. I do remember rebuilding at least 2 saws & 1 of those the owner paid for the 039 upgrade. It's very common for the crank seals to fail on just about any Stihl product. If you have 1 giving you fits, check spark 1st, compression 2nd unless that's obvious, case leaks next.
