Great Video. It was awesome seeing the Clutch moving in and out like that. On a side note the bar oiler looked to be working great, as it oiled your table. Also very cool seeing the oiler in action.

Fascinating! So that's how it works! It all makes sense now why a worn clutch will cause the chain to turn at idle speed and how revving the engine with the chain brake on will wear out the clutch. Thanks!

I own an old 021. Last year I overhauled it including a new sprocket. I put it away without cutting anything. I tried it last weekend, It starts and runs fine, It cuts fine, it oils ok, but it seems like the chain stops easier than it should in a cut. It's been a couple of years since I did any cutting so I don't remember for sure how it used to be. Can you suggest any cause/fixes for this or if it's even a problem? Thanks

I have that metallic rattling and cant start my saw... how did you remove that metal clip thing? Was it accessible??

My clutch was absolutely warped.. unfortunately I was taught to keep the brake on at all times.. so when I started up my chainsaw in half throttle, I’d keep it there in half throttle while it warmed up.. this eventually burned up my clutch.. the labor/parts to repair was only $100 less than a brand new chainsaw..

Can you please elaborate on the exhaust problem you mentioned and what to do about it? My saw's chain moves at idle. I tried to lower the idle (not the splined L or H screws, but the phillips idle screw) but that didn't help. I replaced the clutch and drum/sprocket because they had clearly been overheated by misuse of the saw (maybe by revving with the brake on or when the chain was stuck in a cut). However, the chain still advances under idling, so I am looking for other ideas for what is wrong. So, please tell me about the exhaust issue that caused your saw's clutch to spin the drum/sprocket at idle. Thanks!

Loose chain perhaps? (my guess) or dirty/corroded clutch shoes catching the sprocket? The exhaust issue was to do with the exhaust not working properly to restrict the engine revs. A lot of the pro users here use a ms150 and port the exhaust by drilling an extra hole in it to speed up the airflow and hence increase revs, and rev increase rate. It effectively removes a bung from the end of the combustion chain. I'm not saying you should do that :-).

JamesTheForester, turned out the L mix screw had been adjusted way too lean, causing excessive engine RPM and engaging the clutch at idle. Spline tool acquired and problem fixed.

At what RPM does the clutch start to engage?

Is the idea that the clutch will break before the engine if the chain sticks

If the chain sticks, it will slow the engine down, reducing the centrifugal force, disengaging the shoes from the drum thereby saving the engine.

Oh wow, does the sprocket really have only 6 teeth?! In chain drives for power transmission it's advised to have 17 or more teeth and also to have an uneven number of teeth on a sprocket (otherwise the same chain always has contact with the same sprocket teeth high increases wear considerably).

Thanks for the comment and in answer to your question - Yep - it's all about speed and horsepower, rather than torque with saws. The sprocket and chains are consumable parts and are designed to require replacing regularly. The saw engines we work with may not have enough power to turn a chain on a large sprocket. We run do slightly bigger sprockets with more powerful saws.

This was a very interesting topic and done by someone who seemed to know what he was talking about. What puzzles me is WHY he bothered to do it; it was so sloppily put together. No care at all about planning the content, no interest in following through on the problem he encountered at that end. Who in the world did he make this for? If he wants to have and retain subscribers, he needs to reflect on how this video shows how not to make an instructional video and rethink it all. There are an awful lot of chain saw experts out in youtube land with oh so much better presentations
