I've seen maybe 10 videos, and I notice a very methodical and logical approach to diagnosing problems and complaints; always starting with basics and then addressing the various systems of the saws. Great explanations and the new camera to look into the cylinder is quite helpful! Erica's approach is intelligent, reassuring and confident. This is some really good info... I have this exact saw, new in 1984. It's been worked very hard for many years, and now has been relegated to occasional use. It is a really good saw, but has a few quirks... I'm confident it still has the original fuel tank vent, fuel line, and filter... Probably would be a good idea to maintenance them, being the saw is 40 years old now...

    My 036 pro was giving me trouble like this for months and it turned out to be the little wire you mentioned with the cut that was shorting and grounding out, which is how the switch turns it off. I took it in to my Stihl guy who didn’t catch it first. A little piece of tape fixed it.

    The two videos I've watched so far are the most informative I have seen on the Internet. Thank you! My Stihl 029 was hard to start from day one. Once running, it started fine, first pull. After about 12 years it became extremely difficult to start, and, if turned off, wouldn't start. I changed the tubing, filter and carb. Sort of back the way it was. Changed ignition module and it started in a couple pulls. Worked great one season. Now, is difficult to start again. This winter, I warmed it up on a heater before trying to start and that helped. There isn't a gap adjustment for the ignition/magneto - just two bolts without slots. I did my best to gap both ends. My next thing was going to be a carb adjustment. I assume it was a tank vent as you showed but I don't recall it. Will probably replace fuel filter, air filter and spark plug just to be sure. I don't have a hand pump, carb block but have gasket material -- will look into these items. I run the saw empty if it won't be used in a day or two. Great videos! I don't trust the local chain saw shop. They just want to sell new chains. I put the saw in and it didn't work any better than when I put it in. So, I reluctantly have to work on mine.

    One thing I didn't hear mentioned is that the Stihl fuel lines are prone to rot if you use ethanol gas. They look pretty much normal to the naked eye but the rubber is honeycombed, which allows the carb to suck air as well as fuel, which leans out the mixture. I've worked on many "communal use" saws (meaning they were owned by a company with many employees who used the saws but didn't do anything to maintain them) that suffered from a rotted fuel line. The users would buy normal gas for the saws and then the lines would rot out. Make sure you use premium gas with no ethanol in these saws.

    It’s so great to see ladies doing what was traditionally man’s work and doing it well. That having been said it is even better to have a video that you can easily understand what is being done and why it is being done. For people like me, who are hearing deficient, not having to try and separate background noise like music, fans, vacuum cleaners to confuse my ears is a godsend! Thank you. I have subscribed.

    It looked like the had Stihl Moto Mix in the tank. Replacing fuel line and filter are two things that I do as a first choice. Fortunately problems.. I check gas tanks and fuel lines at 7 psi with my Mighty Vac. Echo tank vents make good replacements for Stihl tank vents. I also check tank vents at 7 psi.

I ordered a 2.6 Oz bottle of STA-BIL 40:1/50:1 full synthetic. I did rebuild the Bing carburetor five years ago from sitting to long. The saw is basically new. I sure don't want to burn her up. I had a couple of those in the past. Also, if you notice there's a small hole right in front of the tank vent hose. The hole is for the end of the hose to go through so it stays out of the way of everything else under the filter cover. Ask me how I know!! So I realized my 32 year old 036 wouldn’t run right occasionally . I finally found that my choke rod lever o the carb would drag on the back of the air filter. This was on more than one filter. I had to grind a tiny bit away on a couple spots with my Dremel and all was good. As far as I know these were original Stihl air filters. Passing this along to others that could run into this.

    The bottom bolts should be 6mm, as I remember. The top two are 5 mm, as I remember. I use a soapy water mix as a press fluid for rubber parts. Just Dawn and water.

    You had a Bing diaphragm in stock? I am impressed! (40 plus year Stihl tech in WNY). Great video showing how it is really done. Other than the inlet lever adjustment, I felt they were one of the best carburetors/

    Your show just popped up. I really enjoyed the details and explanation. I watch Chicanick also and both you ladies do a much better job than most of the guys! Also, I love your accent pronunciation of the word “out”. The only area in the US I’ve heard that pronunciation is in parts of Virginia that were settled by Scottish Irish settlers in the 1700 & 1800’s. Some must have settled in Ontario also. Love your show and am now a subscriber!

    Thanks excellent video. Have you ever noticed any choke issues with a 038 mag II? The choke on this series of saws seems to be sometimes a show stopper.

  • @marriedwithsmallengines

    @marriedwithsmallengines

    Hi! I have seen this many times. The choke is inside the air filter. I would recommend replacing the air filter with a new OEM from Stihl (I have seen these air filters aftermarket and they didn't operate properly). Sometimes you have to replace the air filter AND the control shaft, due to age and wear. Those two parts tend to go hand in hand. I hope this helps! :)

    Good Job: A couple things... With enlightened customers, 1st thing we do is take the muffler off and check the screen. 2nd we take a digital closeup picture of the cylinder and piston. This covers us if the customer starts tweeking on the screws and runs it lean and burns it up. We print the picture and attach it to the repair order and save the picture for evidence if the saw comes back, this covers our butt. Working on the carb with it in your hand is asking for trouble. One of my mechanics ended up in the ER with a screwdriver stuck in his palm. What was bad was the dirty screwdriver embedding the dirt deep in his hand. He was out for weeks clearing up the infection. I don't wish that on anyone.

    Very true! I wasn't clear enough in what I was saying. I was trying to explain all the points of entry that I had to seal up - not all the leaks I was looking for. I will be more clear during my next pressure / vac test.

    Many years ago I took over my dad's old Husqvarna weed-wacker that he had given up on since it died after about 15 minutes of use and couldn't be restarted until cooled down. Don't know how many times he had taken it to the shop to get fixed and they claimed to done it. Yet he took it to them again before giving it to me. Same story... invoice but no fix. When I went there to question them it turned out they never had test run it for more then a minute or so... Anyway I decided to give it a service myself and see what I could find. The cause was the spark plug. (I did not buy anything from that company but went back there to tell I had found the cause but not what it was since they had screwed my father several times just to get him to buy a new one). The one I got was bought in mid 80's and still runs!

    On the 038 AV Super, did you say there was one screw missing when you went to remove the muffler, or not? I have my original 034 AV Super from 50 years ago & it is still one of my favorite chainsaws. With a sharp chain & a 20" bar, it will handle the majority of my work at the woodlot. Thanks for sharing your expertise.
