Guthrie at 5:17, casually removing the capo and debating where to put it while ripping through that solo, got me questioning my entire life right now not gonna lie

for about 10 years i went on to shoot lfr pistol- championships and all. One day i was practicing and the stand was crowded. we were all prepin for finals- then one dude came on and screamed at the top of his lungs- why the heck the stand would be so full! That completely threw me off and got me right mad. Later on i went backstage wanting to go havoc on him for "disturbin my peace". My then tudor took me aside before i could jump into action- he said, no matter what happens during the shooting, you must always focus on what you are doing- right now. Be in the now- that effected me so tremendously over the years that litterally anything can happen whilst im doing something- I never loose focus again like i did then. Sometime when i practise bass or oud, i want to get through the phase of course. then i hit a bum note but instead of replaying i stick with it because my objective was to get through the phrase. i focus on good notes separateley. Does that make any sense at all? :D
This is just magic. How can something so profoundly sad and destructive be expressed with such beauty and creative brilliance?

Thanks for your comment Goldfish, I'm still not convinced he's worthy of SW though. Personally out of the "technicians" I'm very much into the likes of Paul Waggoner or Steve Vai and Tosin Abasi, a lot more creative. I agree Guthrie is a good guitarist, but so are many.
@dennoow
7 жыл бұрын
Rene Steenvoorden They are good, but Guthrie's phrasing is out of this world. His timing, note choice and amazing ears make him into a far more interesting guitarist than Abasi, who is waaay more of a "technician". Govan's ability to improvise over anything he hears far surpasses that of Vai or Abasi. they are better composers though. There's something to be said for both. Bach was a brilliant composer; Charlie Parker an amazing improviser :)

please do some research before you compare steve vai to the great guthrie govan dammit
After listening to Guthrie's solo you can perfectly say: "I can die already, I've seen everything... oh wait, there's even more in the song"
The Genesis influence is strong in this one.

That's all I've been thinking while I listen.
guthrie, marco and steven together...what more can this world want!
Guthrie playing for a serious band , with serious songs and serious lyrics is SOMETHING SERIOUS I mean. I like Erotic cakes, but a solo like this, in an epic song context, makes it 100000X more interesting and emotional to listen him. This is the perfect type of band for such monsters, where he has 2 minutes to shine, and, oh dude,I swear he does I can't compare this to The Aristocrats show I was at few years back, it was OK but it felt a bit like emotionless show-off gig of three talented guys with some cool moments, but no emotion , my opinion of course.This piece , in contrast, sends shivers through my spine. Guthrie needs some composer like Wilson, that just put the emotion, the feels, that totally shines without thinking what to play over a Gm7b5 chord. The magic pops up as you can see in this video.
@yvancluet8146

+iorch82 Some of Erotic Cakes song are plenty of emotion i think. Eric, or Uncle Skunk, were the bomb. Plus some songs from the latest Aristocrats album (Tres Caballeros) are really full of emotions as well. Smuggler's corridor, 4/4 the whole time, only basic chords (Minor and Major, almost no 7th), really beautiful

Same opinion here. Saw them for the Raven and Hand tours, and its the most cohesive and powerful line-up, imo. There's something that Guthrie and Marco add.
@Lu-ql
Жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's not just that they're extremely good, because Steven had already played with excellent musicians before. But these guys had such great chemistry that it made them reach a whole new level. I think The Raven That Refused To Sing and Hand. Cannot. Erase are Steven's best works and this lineup is a huge reason why.
people comparing steven to genesis,gabriel,rush they are amazing but its steven wilson people keeping music alive in this era and this fucking great band and not to mention guthrie govan.
The watchmaker works all day, and long into the night He pieces things together despite his failing sight Though all the cogs connect with such poetic grace Time has left its curse upon this place Each hour becomes another empty space to fill Wasted with the care and virtues of his skill..... the Watchmaker metaphore which is deeply passionate of fine mechanics is so powerful and make us think deeply about the relationship between the artist and its creation which undergo the inevitable curse of time .... I can make a guess here which is " Entropy is a source of creation" ..........
When I witnessed Steven and his current line-up play this back in the Autumn, it quite literally took my breath away. One of the greatest musical experiences of my life. Thank you, Steven, for making my musical journey through life exciting all over again.

I saw them on April 23rd of last year with this exact same lineup and it was not only one of the best shows but one of the best nights of my life. I got to meet them all and became really chummy with Marco who was such a humble, funny, sweet and down to earth guy :)

I'd say this song couldn't be better in any way. I absolutely love this song and in my opinion it is a masterpiece.
At the peak of their performance quality. The combination with Guthrie,Marco and Theo.... if you watch other footage they never come close to this lineup. I don't want to bum Dave Kilminster or any other but here's something very special happening, magic so to say.
And never forget the Bass player. Beggs quietly but brilliantly keeps them all going.
Steve Wilson + Marco Minneman + Guthrie Govan = BOOOOOOOOMMM
Dear Mr. WIlson, with all my respect for your European tour 2015 musicians (so good), please promise that next time you will come to Barcelona with Mr. Govan and Mr. Minnemann. Thanks in advance.

spiderbabybill No, that is not true. In fact, Chuck Norris doesn't a have right bicep, but two left biceps. He gave his right bicep to Guthrie (he was born without arms) before he get killed by an Air-Sharknado (obviously, he respawned a few days later). The left bicep of Guthrie it's from Leif Erikson's leg (ye, Leif Erikson's leg had a left bicep too). Abrazo.

Absolutely fantastic. Wilson performs his art at his best; jaw-dropping Guthrie's solo... Love it.
This this is just GREAT stuff!! For folks who are always looking for old prog bands elements within new artists..keep listening to the old stuff. One small suggestion is to go back and listen to Vivaldi, Bach and Beethoven and than listen to Schuman, List, Tchaikovsky, etc. Its OK to listen to others and use this as an inspiration +. As long as you are trying to make something individual..Again, Wilson is great and him/PT should come to NYC. Cheers
This is so Genesis... I like it!
I like this song because I was abandoned when I was pregnant. It's the line "I never really loved you but I'll miss you anyway" that reminds me of Paul. He is really distant.

Really sorry to hear that. Hope you're okay now. This music has just reminded me of my youth. A modern version of 'Yes'. They were the first Prog Rock band I saw in Liverpool, 1972 . Only just discovered this outfit while I'm texting this message. 22.21pm, 4th of April, 2024. Keep safe.

Paul Davidson was 22 years old when I became pregnant. He was unable to care for himself let alone anyone else. He was 23 when our son was born.
As I was just sitting in my living room totally immersed in this glorious audio/visual spectacle, with my tabby purring under one hand and a doobie in the other, my thoughts turned to those of sheer elation that I'm a die-hard Proghead and get to enjoy such wonders... And also of thankfulness for Steven and so many other talented artists who provide us with music of such epic proportion!! PROG ON !!!! Oh yeah, ...... 6:12 & 8:52 - HOLY F#CK ! ! !

OMG WTF!!!! this is music!!!! what a true masterpiece I just only hope that SW released a DVD-CD album of this tour, this is so great and indispensable in any music prog archives, so Steven go for it made a DVD/BRD/CD of this masterpiece will be grateful to you.
"Steven Wilson" is the Prog Icon or Music Icon of today, and his entire band are excellent musicians but for me the 2 most underrated musicians in this band are "Adam Holzman" on keyboards & "Theo Travis" on woodwinds who seem to be often over looked from this excellent band!

Schon was ganz Besonderes.
Just saw them in LA a couple nights ago. Possibly the best show Ive ever seen. 2 and a half hour set of almost all the songs I wanted to hear. I couldnt have been happier. I brought along two new comers who had never heard much Steven Wilson before and they got their asses blown away. This song was a particular highlight.
Maravilloso, inspirador, sublime.
A staggering piece of music. For those who say Steven just isn't as compelling without PT, I point to this album as his very best work without the group. I don't think he'll top it.

Breathtaking!
i was awestruck when i saw this live. tell the truth i didn't know who he was. a great friend said let's go, "this guy is brilliant". well he was right. holy cats, blew the roof off the joint. take earplugs, the sound was like an earthquake at times;)

Just as great Steven is at giving you a Audio experience, he is just as amazing at giving a visual experience. Behind him is a lot of lamps wich is pointing in different directions, so his shadow will be on the curtain. The curting is on the first half of the concert and then he the whole thing falls down, so you clearly can see Steven and his bandmates. :) Its a AMAZING experience. Been to 8 Steven concerts and every single one has been a unique experience. :) And as Cristian said. Go To Show!
