Steven Lawson: True Truth

Steven Lawson: The Truth
When Jesus told Pontius Pilate that He came into the world to bear witness to the truth, Pilate responded by asking, “What is truth?” (John 18:37-38). In this session, Dr. Steven Lawson considers objective truth, reminding us that truth does exist and that Christians are called to bear witness to the objective truth of the gospel.

@Terry Steelman let me get this straight. You have been a Christian 40 years. A pastor for 10. Your goal is to know truth. But you challenge a believer on his confidence in the Bible? Practically every criticism you make sounds like an UN-BELIEVER. Perhaps a Bart Uhrman or Jesus Seminar wanna be. Maybe just a plain old scoffer sceptic. Its in vogue you know. ;>). Sorry about the sarcasm. It's the old nature peeking out. Sorry about the sarcasm.

@Terry Steelman The most difficult book I ever read was by contempory evangelist with Billy Graham, Charles Templeton... "Farewell to God". I litterally cried my way through it. Once a passionate preacher before thousands... then doubts about the scritures which he tried to convince Graham... then unbelief followed by total apostacy and atheism. Tragically he would face his God in 2001, yet in his sins. No chance for repentace or change of heart. :>(

@Terry Steelman Hi Terry. For now I will let you determine my denomination by my answers. There is a truth far greater than a denomination or which church is right. Actually, the question which church is right is the WRONG question. I learned this nearly 50 years ago! The greatest question (and answer of course) is... HOW CAN I BE RIGHT? I would strongly suggest that you focus on but one truth which is connected to your salvation... THE HOLINESS OF GOD. Once you sence His true Holiness you will see yourself as you really are. Then and only then will the remedy make sence. Blessings my friend. jerry

*"Truth or faithfulness of God is much the same as His righteousness. All He says and does is true. His veracity is an element of His character. God cannot lie. As God is eternal His truth remains the same. Whatever is out of harmony with His revealed truth, the same is a lie. To the question, "What is truth?" this answer which we repeat in Heaven is true: "To know God as He has revealed Himself to man is Truth of the highest order." Our Lord declared: "I am the Way, the Truth and the Life" (John 14:6). All things taught or believed that are out of harmony with His clear revelations are both false and misleading."*

36 Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not of this realm." 37 Therefore Pilate said to Him, "So You are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice." 38 Pilate *said to Him, "What is truth?" And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews and *said to them, "I find no guilt in Him. (John 18:36 - 38, NASB).

I kind of always read Pilot’s question as an honest question from an unbeliever who just wanted knowledge but not relationship with God. Typical of many. But never read it as sarcasm or mockery to Jesus.

  • @JesusISdaonlyway

Me neither Eddy. Maybe because that's how it's largely been portrayed. But the scriptural truth is "no man seek after God (Ps 53:2, Romans 3:11). In that I can only conclude that if Pilate was honestly inquiring after the truth in a true sense then it was God drawing him and not some honesty in himself. The typical response is one way to put. But I see the sin in wanting knowledge but not relationship with God and if that's what Pilate wanted, that is sin. You cannot receive the knowledge of God and reject the God of knowledge without it being sin against Him who is Himself The truth. God is the truth Jesus came to bare witness of. God the ultimate reality in which light all other realities are revealed as wholly contingent and appear as they really are. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. Proverbs 9:10 Thats the knowledge Jesus came to bring and when He left He sent His Spirit to continue what He started. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. "I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. John 16:7‭-‬14 I really never thought about Pilates inquiry that way but I can see it now. Cause when I look at it again though Pilate didn't understand as much as the Jews, he was not sinless in his own handling of the truth. He like many today seek to take a neutral position, as we saw he tried to wash his hands of the matter of Jesus..but he was guilty as well as the Jews.. Jesus said to Pilate "...he who delivered me to you has the greater sin" (John 19:11). Blessings.

Eddy you have a good point, and I agree and understand that viewpoint: Actually Pontius Pilot (PP) really was fair and disinterested (objective/unbiased) enough to rightly declare in the trial that Jesus really was innocent; so in a way, PP was inquiring on something that is usually "understood", "without saying", so then trying to figure out if there was something he was missing. (and actually he was missing the point that Jesus is the truth, and relationship with God is part of everything etc...) ! On the other hand, the worldly evil-system was still churning in his calculations, Jesus was a "competitor" for people's adoration and respect and even rule of law, and it was convenient for his (PP's) career and his (PP's) ego to let a little sarcasm slip in just as the serpent slipped into the Garden of Eden with its tempting worldly logic. PP let sarcasm be the other side of his question, even if it seemed mocking, that way he (PP) could stroke his own ego AND gain some "Browny Points" with "people-pleasing" the demonic, egotistical Pharisees, by putting Jesus down. It would have been "political suicide" for PP if he didn't go that route. So in thinking, it does seem very possible that it was more than just an objective question from a simple inquirer, it really did have sarcasm and mockery in it.
