Yzerman drafts the type players that are most valuable…both in playoffs, in free agency, and in trade. Two way centers, high end D-man, etc. High scoring wingers (Benson), small players unless they have unrivaled skill, and the like go later. Yzerman has missed some picks already (everyone does) but has already done better in 5 years than Holland did in his last 15.

Nazar isn’t really Yzerman’s type of player. This is a similar argument to Danielson vs Benson (or to a limited extent Edvinsson vs Eklund, though that mixes positions). Yzerman has said he drafts for the playoffs.

I’ll admit I wasn’t thrilled with the Kasper pick at the time but that “Tkachuk under your skin skill player” is proving more valuable by the season. I’m excited to see what he can do. Especially with the group brewing around him.

I am thinking more along the lines of Zetterberg type edge. So responsible and able to read the play he foils even the best. Just remember when Henrik lifted Sydney Crosby's stick in the 2008 playoffs, enough to make Crosby attack him after the game. Enough for Crosby and Malkin to attack Zetterberg in game 1 of the 2009 playoffs.

Kasper can some bring grit to the middle six. Kid is an absolute work horse and I do think he can be a perennial 50-60 point player in his prime. It does leave a little bit to be desired at 8OA, and I remember a lot of the fanbase wanting Nazer since he's from Mt Clemens, MI. But I think Kasper will be a fit in Detroit during the contending window.

In 2016-17 Red Wing roster (last Wings playoff appearance) Henrik Zetterberg (captain) was leading scorer with 68 points (17g 51a) and only Tomas Tatar had goals in the 20's (he had 25 goals). So if Marco Kasper can get close to what Zetterberg did back then and be a solid 200 ft competitor I would take it. But after all we are talking about the future, who knows? I just want to show that there can be different perspectives about a players ceiling because how they FIT on a team roster and culture is a pretty important factor that is never assessed (and maybe cannot be). Additionally, Kasper comes from Europe which is a different style of hockey that has to be rationalized over a term in the minors for Kasper. Keep it real Lego

Not Yzerman's mistake what Kasper did just one game in the NHL for 2 seasons, it's Lalonde's misdoing. This season only four players from AHL played in NHL: Edvinsson, Berggren, Aston-Reese and Czarnik. Lalonde needed to call up the entire Griffins trio Berggren-Mazur-Kasper to the RW for practice with big boys and show team's depth, especially when Larkin is out and Detroit team struggles in attack and in need of freshness in roster. I dunno how Yzerman will keep this trio in the team if Griffins will win the Calder Cup and Berggren will request corresponding contract and/or place in the red-white team.

I still think he should have picked Nazar. I'm not trying to hate on Yzerman or Kasper for that matter. I thought Mo was a great pick at the time. I thought Danielson was fantastic. I just feel like Detroit needs a guy like Nazar who can transport the pick across center and create offense. Right now Danielson is the only option I think could be a 2c if he develops well. I saw Nazar as a possible contender for that slot. I don't think Kasper is a bad pick, I just think Nazar is better and I haven't seen enough to convince me otherwise.
