    No, we didn't make a mistake moving up to draft Cossa. We wanted and needed a goalie. Good for Dallas for picking that kid, but the goalie was clearly a necessiity, and he's playing pretty damn well for GR in the AHL playoffs.

    You assume Detroit would have drafted Johnston had they kept that pick. There's no way of knowing how the draft would have played out. Regardless, the Wings goaltending situation has been pretty grim sine Howard retired, and now they at least have two top 10 goalie prospects.

  • @dannik9932
    @dannik993220 күн бұрын

    That's not how draft trades work. Detroit would never have gotten Johnston. Dallas was going to take him either at 15 or 28. Since they had somehow confirmed or were confident that Johnston would not be taken by anyone else, they traded back to gain the extra assets. So Johnston likely would not have been there even if Detroit picked 28. If Detroit made a mistake, then at least 20 other teams did as well.

    You read his draft profile and it’s not nearly as impressive as what he’s become, Dallas did there job in taking a kid who had solid floor, but grew him to the point where his ceiling has become very high. You very well might be talking about Kasper or Danielson in the same breath as Johnston given proper coaching. Kasper especially could become a big surprise given he got a very good floor now and could easily improve as time goes on

    Johnson missed an entire season of development so it was a void era that many teams worried players with a high ceiling would slip between the cracks. Looks like it happened as Johnston appears to be playing like a lottery pick.

    if Dallas were really high on Wyatt Johnson then they may have just picked him at 15 if the trade hadn't happened - so not really sure it makes sense to say Dallas's franchise has been made by Detroit making that trade... Now if Detroit had traded back because they desperately wanted extra picks and this allowed Dallas to move up which also allowed them to take Johnson that may be more relevant.

    I am more worried about what SY does drafting AFTER the 1st round. So far all he has to show for it is Carter Mazur who really will not be a game changer in the NHL. Last years second round for Detroit resulted in yet another goalie and two more defenders. Brady Cleveland is a huge project.
