The best comment I’ve heard about this movie was that Ralph Macchio should’ve gotten an Oscar for pretending he knew how to really play and Steve Vai should’ve gotten one for pretending he couldn’t.
@vovindequasahi

I agree totally. Ralph makes an awesome job makes his finger look like they are actually playing, and Steve Vai kicks ass making it seem like he is failing at playing his own parts. lol Steve Vai also looks so evil in this! The Devil's henchman!

Ralph Macchio has some guitar chops. He apparently studied with Ry Cooder for six months leading up to filming. Some scenes in the movie are actually Macchio playing.
The best thing about the scene is that Ralph used the Devil's music against him. That's one of Paganini's 24 Caprices. Paganini was an 18th-century violinist who was such a badass and a ladykiller it was alleged he'd made a deal with the Devil.
"The blues ain't nothin' but a good man feelin' bad" -Willie Brown You gotta check out the movie!
The man in the brown hat is a blues legend who Macchio found living in a nursing home and broke him out if he'd teach him the blues. The man had sold his soul to the devil at the crossroads many years ago. The guy in all black is the devil. If Macchio wins the battle the devil will release the blues legend's soul, but if he loses the devil gets his soul as well. Macchio is classically trained at Juliard in the movie, but loves the blues. There's more to the story, but that's basically what's going on here.

The devil? Where you been? He done changed his name to Scratch! Yeah I know in the film it was Legba who was a devil like character but had Haitian roots. I guess he basically was the devil in this film though.
Ry Cooder played the slide guitar parts. Ralphs final , winning solo was played by Vai. It’s a retelling of the Robert Johnson story of him meeting the devil at the Crossroads to sell his soul for musical ability. The man with the hat that laughed just before Ralph started his solo was the devil. Vai’s character was a player that had previously sold his soul and represented the devil in the contest

I am pretty sure Steve Vai did both parts of "The Head Cutting Duel". Ry did all of the acoustic slide guitar parts for the soundtrack. There has been interest in locating the red "Jack Butler Jackson" guitar (It would be cool to have) A collector has been trying to locate it and has interviewed all involved in the movie, including Steve Vai, but has not yet tracked it down...a cool point of interest...to me anyway. I have this DVD(remember those), I occasionally endure this average movie just to watch the last 10 minutes.

@@green323turbo I have heard of Arlen, but I don’t know of his material. I seem to recall him writing an article in one of the guitar magazines. I have heard a lot of Steve Vai.I have been a fan since “ Flexible “. I have most of his albums ( I think a new one is out or will soon be) His style and music and sound are easily recognizable.Ray Cooder was doing a lot of movie sound tracks in the 80s and his style of slide playing is also quite distinct. But I don’t know enough of Arlen to pick him out in the sound track… it was not a very good movie, but I have seen it many times. I will probably watch it again to see if I can localize Arlen’s playing.Funny, I was recently looking at a 1988 323 turbo awd. 82000 miles..a very unusual and cool ride.✌️🎶🚗

Steve will always have a little Jack Butler in him.
This was a big movie back in the 80's-90's, then was forgotten. After seeing the movie you will understand the context of this guitar battle. Most people end up watching the movie a 2nd time because they loved it so much. Also, that final piece of classical guitar was called "Eugene's trick bag" written and composed by Steve Vai. Eugene, the kid, was acting playing guitar. In real life he doesn't know how to play. He did a fantastic job at acting.
Ralph's character was classically trained. One of the biggest hurdles for him in the beginning of the movie was him inserting blues licks during class. Kid was practically obsessed with the blues. In the end, it was classical music that saved him.
Not a bad flick, loved it when I was a kid growing up in the 80’s. I always thought Vai recorded both parts of the solos. For more great guitarists, check out Joe Satriani, Tina S., Larkin Poe, or Junior Brown.

Just watched this yesterday. The man actually playing the Macchio part, is RY COODER. He does all the blues licks throughout the movie and since the 70s has been a highly influential guitarist. This is Steve and RY.

I was in high school band in the 80s and when I saw this movie, I put down my trumpet and sax and got a guitar. This movie is so inspirational, musically, that it has been one of my favorites ever. Great review.
When I watch this movie, its like the song "Devil Went Down to Georgia ".
If you are familiar with Rick Beato’s channel you should check out his interview with Steve Vai. It goes thru his early years and how he got started as a musician and how he got in Frank Zappa’s band. It shows how smart as musician Vai is. Great interview.
This was the film that made a lot of us kids back in the day pick up the guitar, still playing to this day in my mid 40's👍Steve Vai is still the man!
Steve Vai got yelled at by the director for not screwing up bad enough at the end. I believe he said it took him like three or four takes to just totally bomb out bad enough to make the director happy. Musicians of his caliber develop a muscle memory that just tells your hands where to go on autopilot. To stop that and put your memory back at age 11 when he first took lessons was really hard for him to do. I love this movie.
Vai played both sides of the guitar duel, except for Ralph's slide guitar parts which were played by Ry Cooder. Steve Vai and Arlen Roth both coached Ralph enough to fake it fairly convincingly. I think Vai looks about right as the Devil's guitarist.

Ry Cooter played the slide guitar stuff Steve Vai played the electric guitar stuff Williams Kanengiser (LA Guitar Quartet) played the classical guitar stuff
The classical piece Ralph plays is Paginini's 5th Caprice written for the violen. It was a notable and fitting piece being that Paganini was rumored to have sold his soul to the devil in order to compose it.
I first seen this movie about 25-30 years ago. I told my old lady I love the way that chick dance around the floor. She gave me the stink-eye
If you were any kind of guitarist in the 1980s, you know this film like the back of your hand. A classic...
Arlen Roth was Ralph Macchio's guitar tutor for the film and played many of his pieces. According to Roth on his website, the final duel was arranged from parts played by him, Steve Vai, Ry Cooder and Bill Kanengiser, who did the classical playing throughout the film.
I believe a number of guitarist including Rye Cooder played for Machio throughout the movie.
Steve Vai did BOTH guitar parts so he didn't really mess up. Ry Cooder and Arlon Roth did the Slide guitar playing through out the movie , but Vai did all the fast non slide parts in the battle
Finally.. been waiting for someone to react to this... best guitar battle ever on film..
Here's a fun fact for you about this scene. In an interview with Steve vai himself said that the hardest thing for him to do was to learn how to mess up for this scene. True story.
You need to see the movie!!! The blues guitar throughout is as good as it gets

Lived here all my life, I took my oldest son to the Delta Blues Museum in Clarksdale for his 15th birthday. He was an up and coming blues guitarist. We have pics in front of the Highway 61 sign with the guitars on it. My boy eventually went on to do a world tour as John Lee Hooker Jr's guitar player. He was also Little Feat's guitar technician for about 10 years. 💜💚💛✌️
I like that poster in the back. Joy and Pain is like sunshine and rain. I used to play that song on my cassette in my car all the time
I love this movie. I'll dig out my old VHS copy every few years to watch it.

Actually, Steve Vai played Ralph's final solo part.

There is such a great film behind this scene.
Don’t click on any Crossroads movie! You’ll end up watching a Brittany Spears movie. 🤣🤣🤣
This is a classic movie, a must watch.
Steve Vai vs Ralph Macchio on guitar would be like Ralph Macchio vs Bruce Lee at martial arts
One is an actor and the other is a guitar god.
If memory serves me correctly, I remember reading somewhere that Steve Vai didn't really want to portayed as some evil guy. He looked convincing to me 😂😂
I still feel bad for Jack Butler, from Memphis.
I love the fact that Eugene had to catch up to Steve the entire battle. Steve lead all the way and Eugene brilliantly held his own. Then the 1 time that Eugene got the lead. Steve couldn't hack it. Nothing beats true talent.

My uncle made us watch this part of Crossroads a million times. I hadn't seen it in forever though! Memories.
Man, I had completely forgot about that movie. Didn't even remember the title or any guitar battle between Macchio and Vai, until I watched the clip and thought "oh yeah, I remember that movie now!" So thanks for reminding me, will have to take a trip back with that movie again.
You gotta watch the whole movie, dude. One, it's just a good movie and two, it helped revive the blues for a new generation.
Ry Cooder plays all the slide guitar and they superimposed his hands on the film. At the end where Ralf is playing the Mozart piece it's actually Steve Vai's hands you see as he actually graduated from Julliard.
Caprice No. 5 is one of 24 pieces composed by virtuoso violinist Niccolò Paganini in the early 19th century. The piece is known for its incredible speed and extremely high technical difficulty. Paganini is said to have been able to play it on one string, but there is no evidence to support or refute this. The piece is also associated with the movie Crossroads (1986 film) as "Eugene's Trick Bag", which was written and performed by Steve Vai and heavily inspired by the caprice. The first recorded true transcription of the piece appeared on Eliot Fisk's landmark recording that transcribed the entire 24 Caprices for the classical guitar. Jason Eli Becker (born July 22, 1969) is an American heavy metal guitarist and composer. At the age of 16, he became part of the Shrapnel Records-produced duo Cacophony with his friend Marty Friedman. They released the albums Speed Metal Symphony in 1987 and Go Off! in 1988. Cacophony broke up in 1989 and Becker began doing solo work, having released his first album Perpetual Burn in 1988, also through Shrapnel. He later joined David Lee Roth's band and recorded one album with him, A Little Ain't Enough. Becker's performing career was cut short by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). In 1996, Becker lost the ability to speak, and he now communicates with his eyes via a system developed by his father. Despite his disability, he continues composing by using a computer and has since released with Shrapnel Collection, a "best of" album of his favorite songs and three new songs. kzread.info/dash/bejne/jK6am4-rpbbSYtY.html
I totally forgot about this ,it was amazing.
It's been years since I saw this movie. I beleive it might be influenced by the legend of Robert Johnson (May 8, 1911 -August 16, 1938) who met the devil at the crossroads and sold his soul to be a great blues guitarist. I recommend reading the wiki about him or check out some KZread videos about him. I think Steve Vai might be the devil in the movie. I could be wrong about the movie. I have to check it out again. And since you mentioned Cobra Kai I recommend the music video "Sweep the Leg" by No More Kings. I like to think of it as it is what happened between the three Karate Kid movies and Cobra Kai.

I'm back with a question. You mentioned Cobra Kai and you also mentioned that you didn't know that Ralph Macchio had been around for a while. Does this mean you haven't watched the Karate Kid movies from the 80s? Inquiring minds want to know.
The whole movie sort of reminds me of "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" - Charlie Danials

He had a great HS music teacher, and then he went to Berklee. Also, when he was younger Joe Satriani was his guitar teacher. He played with Frank Zappa and so he got a lot of great teachers.
To get the context of what's going on here, you have to watch the movie! It is a fantastic story.
I have heard that the hardest part for Vai was playing the wrong notes/not playing the part correctly all the way through. He knew what the part was, what it was supposed to be, and he could play it (which he did as it's what Macchio is miming along at the final classial piece he ultimately wins with). And I guess he screwed up a few times by actually playing it right. Which is really funny.
