@@lelinho885Put this into Google translator: He said only two guitar players have changed what was possible with the guitar, Hendrix and Eddie. He said Van Halen kept having more and more hit songs. He also said some new players are faster and less sloppy than Hendrix and Eddie, but those are the only two players to make everyone say woah, this is a game changer.

I saw Van Halen at the Oakland coliseum when they opened for Black Sabbath on their first tour. Eddie did eruption, when he finished, there was a pause in the audience, like everybody didn't realize what the f*** just happened. Then there was a huge applause. It was an amazing show and we were all blown away. Half the people left when Black Sabbath came on. Ozzy said later it was the dumbest thing they ever did having Van Halen open for them...

One of my brothers & a good buddy went to see them in 1978. They were opening for 2 other very well known, popular bands. They hadn't even heard of Van Halen before. After they were done, they literally walked out. No longer having any interest in seeing the other 2 bands. Woke up the next day, went to the record store as soon as it opened, & bought their album. If that isn't a Rock & Roll moment of the highest order, I don't know what is!

@@BeatlesFan1975 Well, not all of them are as you describe them to be, but I have to admit that a large proportion of the new generation, especially in metal, are going absolutely overboard when it comes to making solos... They aren't bad per say, but they can be very tricky to follow along, because of how technical they are and by their unusual/weird timing, which makes them more of a rhythm driven lead section than a solo. However, there are some great guitar players who happen to have a lot of feel even if their sound gets criticized often (Tim Henson, Ichika Nito, Tosin Abasi and more). Finally, if you've made it through it all, thanks for the time out of your day to do so and I hope you have a great one!

Fans will always make comparisons, but throughout my career, I've always stood by my conviction that "it's not a competition." We, being individuals, can bring something different to the stage, so bring what you got and win 'em over! I've never been what I would regard as a "great player," but I had other musicians approach and say things like, "I looked up and thought, 'Damn! I gotta follow this guy?" I also had a couple of aspiring players that said, "I want to play just like you man! You just captivate your audience!" Meanwhile, I had guys trying to steal my spot... and almost succeeded! I was not great by any measure, in my opinion, but I was honest. I was real. "I" was on display and I didn't intend to impress anyone in the seats, I simply wanted them to have a good time and enjoy my performance. Looking back, I'd say I succeeded. And oddly, even though I was never signed, I'm still remembered amongst the peers and fans of my day.

Eddie was a game changer on so many levels. His rhythm guitar was unparalleled. His songwriting is sublime. Notice how it changed when Hagar joined. It became more pop with Hagar's voice. I listen to some of the solos that literally few people will hear and just shake my head. For instance the solos on "Bottoms Up", "I'll Wait", "Sinner's Swing", "One Foot out the Door", I could go on. He also built a guitar that he envisioned combining his favorite elements of Gibson and Fender guitars. He happened upon the sound by accident by forgetting how to wire one of the pickups. So he just put one in and didn't bother using it!!! One of my fave songs is "On Fire", how does one even conceive that? I don't know if this is well known but him and Alex are half Asian. Their mother is from Java.

But you never saw someone doing any technique and literally everyone thought "Oh, he got that from Beck, that's the thing he does", or "He's got that nasty tone like Beck", etc. Then you get to the equipment, which everyone uses today. Randy learned everything from Eddie. He even said it openly. Sorry but no. I don't know about anyone who'd say "holy shit, wtf is THAT?" in awe when they heard Randy's first recording. I know of tens of people just in my vicinity who had that reaction when they heard Van Halen record the first time, me included. Not even Hendrix had people drop their jaws in such wild numbers. Hendrix was influential with guitar players but people didn't go bananas when they first heard his record. With Hendrix, you'd go more like "uh, that's really crazy but weird". With Eddie, you'd put the damn thing on repeat just to listen to it again and again because you simply got hooked.

  • @bassinblue

There is one thing I've learnt about Hendrix and Eddie and it seriously gets overlooked because you have to know their music and their eco system to understand. They were the sum of many musicians who inspired them, but they fleshed out those influences and added their own unique personalities to it. They also transcended and had the ability to hop to any style and make it work. I'll give you an example. One of Eddie's greatest works wasn't even on a rock/metal song, but rather a pop one (beat it) and one of Hendrix's best works was done on a folk song (All Along The Watchtower). Point is, they could go anywhere and somehow make it right.

Artistry, the unbelievable set of skills, musicality, ability to instantly grab the listener, his incredible charm with ever present smile, making it all so incredibly easy. Nobody had it all but Eddie. I myself love to listen to many guitar players. Steve Vai, Steve Morse, George Lynch and others are amongst them, infact I think Steve Morse is one heluva virtuoso. But was he a complete package when it comes to presenting his guitar playing? No. Yet I absolutely dig him. But one must recognize that Eddie was simply the ultimate guitar player who had inspired tens of thousands kids to pick up the guitar in hope they one day will be like him. Nobody else could do that, ever, and nobody will be able to even come close. Steve Vai is absolutely right on the money with that one. It also shows his humility and respect.
