Steve Smith: This MSU Spartan’s STATURE and SKILLSET saw him compared to MAGIC JOHNSON | FPP

Спорт

As a young college star, he drew comparisons to the one and only Magic Johnson due to his college choice, stature and exceptional passing ability, and while Steve Smith would never be Magic Johnson, he was uniquely Steve Smith. A player who was able to run your offense, shoot the lights out or slash to the hoop and he was a winner who possessed things you couldn’t teach such as him almost always showing up in the playoffs. He had a phenomenal 4 year career with the Michigan State Spartans where he left as the programs leading scorer, and then be a top 5 pick to a Miami Heat team still looking for their identity. And although Smith would struggle with injuries during his time in Miami, he would form a trio with Glen Rice and Rony Seikaly that helped the Heat to the first successes in franchise history. He would be traded to Atlanta after 3 seasons where he would have his best years on a great all around team consisting of players like Dikembe Mutombo, Mookie Blaylock and Christian Laettner. But, although the Hawks were a great regular season team, they could never get it done in the playoffs as Steve Smith seemed to be the only one to consistently show up. He would play a couple solid years on some exceptional Portland Trailblazers team which included him being part of the 2000 team who lost to the Shaq and Kobe led LA Lakers in a historic 4th quarter collapse. He would eventually secure his championship in 2003 during his second year with Spurs dynasty consisting of a peak Tim Duncan, aging David Robinson and young Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili. His final years consisted of him bouncing around a few teams, including scoring the first three pointer in Charlotte Bobcats history, before retiring after 2005 and 14 seasons in the league.
His career wasn’t incredible, and his play wasn’t flashy, but he got the job done and didn’t back down from anybody, including Michael Jordan who he seemed to raise his game for. But even though he was tough on the court, you’d never think so off the court as he was the incredible kind and generous, winning multiple awards attesting to this. And these are always the types of players that slip through the cracks, so today we’re going to bring attention to Smitty, Steve Smith.

Facts…. Kevin Willis a Legend. Him and Ralph Sampson was the first 7’0 or better guys who could play and defend 3-5 and NOT be pigeon holed into a full time 5. there were a few that broke the mode. Willis & Smitty broke Molds. Smitty was Smooth as Silk and a Natural Scorer. Behind Drexler and Mitch Richmond, Smitty was up there a few points behind MJ on a Regular Basis

People I'd love to see stories about include - Derrick Coleman: He looked like the total package coming out of Syracuse, had ups and downs in his career and life - Kenny Anderson: He was an absolute phenom and child prodigy who had high expectations to live up to, also had his share of ups and downs in life - Larry Johnson: He was a sensation at UNLV and Charlotte, but was never quite the same after his back injury in 93-94 - Bob McAdoo: He's in the HOF, but I think people forget how important he was to the evolution of basketball, specifically bigs who can shoot

I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. I SO wanted the Blazers to get something GOOD for Clyde Drexler. In earlier 1994-95, The Seattle Times said that the HEAT were offering Steve Smith (this after he was traded to the Hawks), and that the Rockets were offering Robert Horry. Either the HAWKS were offering Steve Smith, or the Heat was offering Glen Rice. Portland needed a YOUNG prime time 2 guard, and I REALLY wanted Steve Smith in Portland. I thought it was a steal, getting Steve Smith for Isaiah Rider! But Portland had to give up Jim Jackson too. And Smith had bad knees. I remember that Steve Smith won some games for Portland. I HATE that he made 8/8 3-Pointers AT Portland, after he got traded to the Spurs.

That Willis for Smith trade is possibly the worst in Miami history. They got fleeced. Some constructive criticism - chill with the stats a bit. We don't need to know the exact FG% or whether a player's steals per game increased by 0.2 for every season. It's pretty easy to look these things up if we really want to know. Try fleshing out your analysis with some bigger picture stuff - eg, some background on WHY the Heat blew up their 1994 playoff team, or some analysis as to whether the Hawks made the right move in converting Smith into a two-guard.
