Mitch Richmond: His HALL OF FAME career was WASTED on the lowly Sacramento Kings of the 1990s | FPP

Спорт

He took the JuCo route to get to NCAA Division I basketball, where he would be a two year star for the Kansas State Wildcats, leading them to the the Elite Eight as a senior. He would move on to the NBA where he would excel from the jump, winning rookie of the year on a Golden State Warriors team led by Chris Mullin and coached by Don Nelson. The next year Tim Hardaway would be drafted and RUN TMC was born. The trio would produce some of the most exciting basketball for the next two season, but right after a huge playoff upset of the San Antonio Spurs, Richmond was traded just days before the 1992 season, to the cellar dweller Sacramento Kings. The next 7 years of his career would be filled with amazing basketball that doesn’t seem to get talked about anymore because the Kings were small market and never had a winning season in Richmond’s time there. But that wasn’t his fault as he was a perennial all star and all-NBA player along with being a top 10 scorer in the league year in and year out. He was universally regarded as the second best shooting guard in the league behind Michael Jordan and finished with the second most points by a shooting guard in the 90s. He didn’t really have any team success with the Kings, but in his lone playoff appearance with Sacramento in 1996, he willed the team to a win over the Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp led Supersonics, marking the first playoff game win since the Kings had relocated to Sacramento. He eventually wanted out of Sacramento, but they didn’t do him any favours by trading him to a below average Wizards where he spent 3 years before finishing off his career with the ’02 Lakers, winning a ring in his final season.
But when it was all said and done, Mitch Richmond was one of the greatest players to grace the court and one of the nicest offense repertoire’s in the game. He gave maximum effort and never complained once, but his career is often forgotten about due to the situations he was in for the majority of his time in the league. So today, we’re going to go back and jog your memory on Mitch “rock” Richmond.

Mitch Richmond aka the Rock is a very underrated players from the 90s era. I never understood why they sent him to Sacramento that put a big blemish on mitch career spending prime years on a sad team but he gave the league buckets. Calm, kind, hardworking, skilled, deceptively athletic and an all time best form shooter. I would put his shot right amongst Ray, Klay, Reggie and Stef. His three-point-line, squared-up jump shot was as smooth as Tisdale’s jazz.

In the 90s he took Bernard King's title as the greatest scorer in the NBA NOT named Michael Jordan. Add Mitch to any big market contender in need of shooting back in the 90s and he would have been a HUGE star. Add him to the Knicks and those Bulls-Knicks games become WAAAY more interesting than they already were. Add him to the Heat, and same thing. Add him to Houston and they probably would have played the Bulls in the Finals a couple of times. He was THAT great. Keep doing your thing with this channel man. EDIT - in this age, Run-TMC may have been NBA champs. They were the original small ball team as Don Nelson is one of the fathers of it. He predicted small ball would take over the league one day and he was right. Mullin and Ritchmond would have been averaging 30+ a game in this modern era. Especially shooting over 40% from the 3 like those two routinely did. Hardaway was no slouch either as he usually shot anywhere from 35 to 40 per cent from 3. Had they had an elite defensive big man, they would have been a serious problem.

What a shame that the Warriors gave up on such a productive trio of Mullin, Hardaway, and Richmond, who had phenomenal chemistry, young, and efficient. Then, was screwed out of an opportunity to make a formidable trio with Mourning and former teammate, Tim Hardaway. Maybe Richmond would’ve won the championship eventually with either trio, but these are two more great what-if scenarios to think about. Luckily, he won one alongside the Kobe-Shaq duo. Lastly, thank god the Golden State Warriors eventually landed Steph Curry, because their reputation would’ve been of the same light as the Charlotte Hornets, Los Angeles Clippers, and Washington Wizards in today’s NBA. Another great video as always. This is quickly becoming amongst my favorite channels to watch, especially for a sport I hold so dearly to my heart. Thank you. 😊 Side note: I love the presentation of these videos with the stat lines of every season/accolades/playoff success/etc at the end of each season. Really put into perspective the players’ contributions and excellence when combined with the storylines of each season, as well as how short/long their prime years were within their careers.

When people say Richmond was a great player but a loser is a bit unfair, especially if you count his All Star and All NBA selections. However, I do think his teams should've won more because his position (SG) in the 1990's was where the game is won especially down the stretch. So if the game is close, Mitch should've willed his team to victory even though his team was bad. What I'm saying is, GSW should've made at least the WCF, Kings should've made at least 2-3 playoff appearances and Wizards should've made at least 1 playoff appearances.

What I remember most about Mitch was the Wizards traded him so they could get MJ on his 3rd time back. Richmond was my 3rd favorite SG at the time behind MJ and Miller. I was excited to get MJ back but I was mad because Richmond was better at that time. Why couldn't they have both?

His talent wasn't wasted because he was in a small market. You don't know what you're talking about. His talent was wasted because the Kings, just like the Warriors, were mismanaged. The Jazz, the Bucks, and especially the Spurs are all small market teams and they had/has great teams and success. Only thing in their way was the Bulls specially with the Jazz. But the warriors were mismanaged because they kept choosing physical attributes like height over skill and talent. They have a long history of doing so, which is why Mitch was traded. Bad management until Joe Lacob came in and changed that mindset. And guess what, now they prefer small ball. And they still do. Maybe even to their detriment but at least they're choosing skill over solely on physical appearance. Same thing with the Kings in the 90's until the Maloofs bought the Kings and started looking at the team differently.
