Steve Senes - Bugera 1960 Day One Demo

Музыка

Based on how much I dig the Bugera Trirec I found at a pawn shop earlier this week I went ahead and ordered Bugera's take on Marshall's 100 watt Plexi amp of the late 60's. The amp arrived today around Noon so I literally had the amp 2 hours when I shot this little video.
I've never had the pleasure of playing through a Marshall Plexi-type amp so this is new territory for me. As such I'm thinking I'll learn more about dialing in a great tone the more I mess with it.
For this demo I played a custom Fender Strat with a Duncan JB in the bridge. Neck pickup is a Duncan Vintage Hot Stack and the Middle is a Duncan Classic Hot Stack.The guitar is plugged straight into the amp. Out of the speaker jack into a Suhr Reactive Load which then runs into my Apogee Ensemble Thunderbolt and into my Mac. In my DAW (Logic Pro X) I'm running Redwirez MixIR2 with a few ir's from Celestion's G12M-25 to simulate a Marshall 4x12 cab.

    Got one about 2 years ago. Very versatile. Not as cheap sounding as people may think of Behringer/Bugera. People laugh at the name. $400 or $1500 for Marshall? I had a 100 watt JMP I loved and gigged with. This? Actually more versatile with the already included mods. Top left both channels parallel, bottom left both channels series, master volume on the rear can be kicked in, wild combinations available. Very much worth the price. Frgn Reverb wants almost $800 now for a new one. They're going up.

    Have one of these and it delivers! The cascaded channel is killer for that VH sound. It grinds up but also has the squish. High treb channel cranked gets those old school UFO tones. It's a great amp at a silly price point. If these ever get discontinued I'd probably buy another in case the first one flaked out.

When I realized I could mix power tubes I just had to try an el34 with a 6l6 and when I did it really rounded out the sound. • @TheGuitarNerdShow

    @TheGuitarNerdShow

    5 жыл бұрын

    It's rated at 150 watts from Bugera but I think it depends on how that is measured. In other words, it's pretty much the exact output stage from the old Marshall 1959 head. Marshall rated them at 100 watts because the standardized way of measuring measures up to the point at which the output stage begins to distort (viewing on a scope). At this point it's putting out 100 watts, however as you drive up the volumes, it continues to increase it's output - just as the old Marshalls cranked put out well over 100 watts, so does the Bugera - in fact I'd be willing to venture a guess that at it's top output it might be closer to 170-175 watts. I agree, you got a better amp. The DSL (the older JCM2000 version) is a good amp and can sound really good. I have a DSL that's been heavily modified from Voodoo Amps and it sounds great, but it doesn't do what the Bugera does - that classic Plexi thing.

    For people commenting on the master volume- this glorious tone is all about the poweramp distortion. You'll want the master volume out of the signal path so that the EL34s can be hit really hard by the amp's volume, then you can attenuate it to save your hearing.

  • @TheGuitarNerdShow

    @TheGuitarNerdShow

    3 жыл бұрын

    Actually that's a misconception. That glorious Marshall roar isn't from distorting the power tubes. It's from driving the Phase Inverter tube before the power tubes. I had a discussion on this with Trace Davis of Voodoo Amps, who makes some amazing Plexi-ish amps. He showed me (correctly) how distorting power tubes to that extent actually sounds pretty crappy. Not at all what we'd think, it's actually kinda ratty soudning. It's all about the Phase Inverter tube. That's why you'll see some boutique-type amps using a PPIMV (Post Phase Inverter Master Volume), which this amp also has. That said, even with a Master Volume that is after the phase inverter, you're only gonna get the volume down so low before you start losing tone because there are other factors at play as well. I run this amp through a load box into impulse responses because being in a residential neighborhood, I can't get away with any real volume. But in my limited dealings with this amp through a 4x12, yeah, the MV is fairly useful until you get down to around 6 or 7, after that you start losing tone.

  • @WalkerMasuda

    @WalkerMasuda

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@TheGuitarNerdShow Thank you for that insight! While I stand by my statement that power tube distortion is an ingredient for some classic tones... I definitely forgot about the phase inverter's role in this, and can concede that cooking the power section might not be nearly as important, relatively speaking. I appreciate the wisdom. Also, I just picked up a used 1960 Infinium today... The master vol does sound pretty good, but CHRIST- it's almost rehearsal volume still at 0! Will be hooking it up to a Fryette Power Station soon. The cascaded input can get really bright too, even for a plexi, which surprised me. It's a balancing act between the two volumes to get something great there, but seems possible. I tried clipping the bright cap at C12, but it wasn't any good that way at fully cranked settings, so I immediately put it back to stock. Anyway, thanks again, Steve. Beautiful playing. You convinced me to try one of these out (:

I thinking much more like Two Notes Torpedo Captor, which have fixed -20dB. That can be enough to crack this amp with this, but have more bedroom volume? I also thinking about take off one pair of power tubes to reduce watts.

  • @TheGuitarNerdShow

    @TheGuitarNerdShow

    Thank you for your kind words! The Suhr Reactive Load doesn't attenuate at all - it just provides a load for the amp and siphons off a tiny piece of the signal to then send to a Mixer, interface, IR loader or wherever else it might get sent. It does offer the option to connect a speaker cab but it will be at full volume, no attenuation. The Captor seems like a good idea, as do the various other similar devices. The Ox and the new Boss Waza Tube Amp Expander have caught my eye, but they're too expensive, out of my range for sure. At least for now ;-)

    Thanks Chris. To be honest, I haven't used it a whole lot. I bought it for my studio for when I need a Plexi tone. I'd be a bit leery only because it's a $400 amp, ya know? if I used it live I'd definitely have a backup, but that's me - I'm paranoid and depend on my gigs for my living. Truth be told I'd love the opportunity to take this thing out and really crank it live!

    I load multiple impulses using MixIR2 from Redwirez. Doing this allows me to get multiple mics, micing positions, etc. If I'm so inclined, this IR Loader would even allow me to mix & match different speakers/cabs in one instance of the plugin. TBH I'm not 100% sure exactly which impulses I used, I know it was a couple from Celestion's G12M-25 pack. I just kinda threw 'em on and commenced to tweaking the amp, figuring a Plexi through Greenbacks in a 4x12 would be the "period correct" way to dial in a tone. I'm planning a much more comprehensive walkthrough video on this amp shortly after the first of the year. The plan is to upload content much more often than I have been. I have a couple weeks gigging out of the country right after the 1st of the year, when I get back I'm planning on getting started. If you haven't yet hit subscribe it'd be a good idea to do so so ya don't miss anything.

    When using the Suhr Reactive load, doesn't that have a max watt spec of 100? Are you engaging the PPIMV on this to help "cut" some of the power, or is it just straight power? If it's not the 100watt Suhr reactive load, which one is it?

  • @TheGuitarNerdShow

    @TheGuitarNerdShow

    5 жыл бұрын

    John Suhr has said the 100 watt rating is based on the old 100 watt Marshall Super Lead amps, the Plexis. The Bugera 1960 is a 4 EL34 power tube amp just as the old Marshalls were. Marshall employed a VERY conservative watts rating scheme that basically went like this - hook up the amp to a scope, run a sine wave through it, turn up the volume until the scope shows the least bit of distortion, stop and assign that wattage to the amp. As we've all experienced, old school Marshalls start to distort between 2 and 3 on the amp. As the knob goes higher, the volume still increases, as does the distortion. All told some of these old Marshalls are pushing over 150 watts. I believe this is where Bugera gets their 150 watt rating at. Power-wise it's an old Marshall 100 watt amp. When using it I do not engage the Master, it's out of the chain. The Suhr handles it fine cause it's equivalent to an old 100 watt Marshall.

    The amp is actually modified internally so this is already the case. For instance, the top/left input runs the guitar signal through both channels of the amp, in parallel. The bottom/left input jack runs the guitar into the first channel then through the second channel (Cascaded gain stages). This is how I prefer to run it. It's not high gain, preamp-wise, but combined with somewhat cranking the volumes, gets a fairly good VH1 type of gain, perhaps a little higher - as is heard in this video.

    While the Master Volume works well it's nowhere near a replacement for running the amp hard with an attenuator. using an attenuator allows you to get the power tubes really working hard - using a Master dials back the signal before it hits the power tubes - reducing that somewhat. Also, the Master doesn't really drop the volume enough if you wanna play the amp really quietly, home playing volume etc.

Assuming it'll be less money than the OX (because everything is less money than it's UA counterpart) I'm seriously thinking about it. Think about it - a reactive load box that also features an effects loop (switchable series or parallel), has built in Waza quality delay, reverb and comp, has a built in 100 watt amp (so I could, in theory, run my 22 watt Deluxe into this and bump it up to 100 watts into a 4x12 or whatever), run the amp signal, quieter, to 1 or 2 cabs, another signal with an impulse response on it to the FOH and still another signal, through USB, to a DAW or whatever. • @TheGuitarNerdShow

    @TheGuitarNerdShow

    5 жыл бұрын

    Actually it's the same power section as a 100 watt Marshall Plexi. The 150 watts rating is due to Bugera's way of rating wattage, which may be different from Marshall's. Just as Peavey rates some of their amps (like the old 5150) as 120 watts when it's the same power section as other 100 watt amps. For example, the way old Marshalls were (and maybe still are) was to put the amp on a scope, send in a sine wave signal and turn up the volume until the scope showed the slightest bit of distortion (which on most old Marshalls was somewhere around 2 or 3 on the volume knob). The point just before where the amp starts to distort was where they stopped it and read the wattage, which came out to roughly 100 watts. Now if you keep turning the volume up, you're going to read more watts being produced. It's been said that the old Marshalls, when cranked, put out 150-200 watts. That doesn't change their rating as a 100 watt amp. The Bugera here starts to distort fairly early on the volume knobs - I recently did a session with a guy using this amp, he was playing a Les Paul, stock pickups. By the time we got to 3 on the volume knobs I was having to back it back down because it was getting too into hard rock territory which wasn't appropriate for the song being recorded. So technically, when cranked I have no doubt this amp'll put out 150 watts, maybe ever more. But I'll stick to the 100 watt classification for an amp powered by 4 EL34s.

I wanted to know why a Peavey with 4 6L6s (or whatever they were) was being advertised as 120 watts when I knew that configuration as 100 watts. And also why a 100 watt Marshall was so much louder than 100 non tube watts. I learned that Solid State power is much cleaner, less prone to distortion. That sounds great in theory but it's that distortion that results in all the harmonic overtones we've come to love and that's defined the sound of electric guitar.

    While I most definitely appreciate your kind words about my playing, your statement is only partially true. I usually do wind up finding a decent sound in any amp I plug into, however, there's a certain 'thing' that a Plexi type amp has that you just can't get otherwise. I say this because I've been playing guitar for around 34 years but never played a Plexi. When I plugged into this amp and learned how to dial it in, boom, there were some sounds that I've tried and never been able to get. The chimey yet not clean sound on the Def Leppard Pyromania album. Heck, older EVH tones, I've tried for decades to get these but never got even close till I plugged into this amp. Tone is most definitely in the player's hands, from his heart, mind, wherever, but to get a certain type of sound, a certain type of amp is required. This just happens to be a $400 amp that can get the sounds of a nearly $3000+ Marshall. That's a bargain and a win any day in my book. Thanks again for your kind words...

    Your comment makes no sense. The guitar is running straight into the amp. The amp speaker output is running via a load box through speaker impulses. Good cabs properly mic'd would sound just like this. Added a little reverb and delay in post. No ‘bunch of BS’ running through it. It’s not usually a good idea to go around trolling and dissing things you know nothing about. It makes you appear foolish.

    @@TheGuitarNerdShow I was going to go into full detail about how each of the devices you used will most definitely color the sound of an amp. But then I realized you are right. I don't know anything about anything. But I do know a few fellows who do. Do me a favor. Get on Skype and video chat someone like Mr. Wampler or Mr. Duncan. Tell them they don't know what they are talking about and that they look foolish. Make sure you record the call and post it on KZread. I have a feeling they would make for some pretty comical videos!

    Think what you want, All I can say is that the amp sounds great, ridiculously great for a $400 amp and better than some I've heard at 5 times the price.

    @@gentlewolf1279 - Thanks. Some people read something somewhere and immediately believe they're an expert. I've got a 30+ year career playing guitar to back up my knowledge LOL! Course, for a keyboard warrior, actual facts don't mean anything...
