The wood and cabinet construction make a HUGE difference. If I had a Mesa 4x12 with V30s, it would sound very different from the Bogner. Nd the Bogner has two Mesa Spec V30s (those are the ones that are mic'd). Thanks for your kind words and thanks for watching!

Great video brotha. For band mix tones, that bogner/v30s would sound excellent. I prefer the EVH celestions overall for this demo, but on another level is the differences between 8ohm and 16ohm speakers....cuz they have different tonal attack as well.

  • @TheGuitarNerdShow

They absolutely do. In fact, the cab with the EVHs originally had 8 ohm EVH speakers. That forced me to run my amps at 8 ohms and I noticed a fairly big difference. So I replaced them and bingo, all my amps felt like they’d come back to life! Thanks for your kind words and thank you for watching!

Big differences, but all sounded good. It also matters what equipment the end users is listening through. When making A/B comparisons, the auditory adjustments could be jarring to the human ear, and a sound that may seem inferior at the time of the switch, may ultimately feel better after hearing it for a while, or hearing it in the mix. So many variables!!

  • @TheGuitarNerdShow

It's strange how they all sounded good for different riffs. Chugs, open chords and a riff or single note solo type stuff. I think the V30 is the best suited for your style of playing. I also wonder if the cab plays tricks on your ears also. Different dimensions and different construction materials I think can add or cut certain frequencies. I have no proof of this, it's just a thought. Thanks for taking the time to post this Steve.

  • @TheGuitarNerdShow

Exactly! They all have their areas where they shine and others where....not so much. Cabinet construction has a HUGE impact on the sound of the speakers. For proof of that, listen to a Marshall 4x12 with V30's and then listen to a Mesa Rectifier cab with V30's. The difference it night and day. Thank you for watching!

Just amazing testing !!! And great playing to really show the differences...I would prefer the G12-65, not too much loss in the mids and EVERY of my fave bands did use the combination of highboosted JCM 800 with these speakers...If you reach a tone with a boost at 1 kHz it's not a good choice to use a speakers with a narrow band cut at 1 kHz...

It seems like when I first started watching your KZread stuff you had that one cab with a X pattern and it influenced me to get WGS and run them in a X pattern. Then add the speaker of choice to a different cab, like 2 speaker vs 4. 4 is inhernetly wider and a touch "darker" like a couple of those speakers you demoed. You can brighten a darker speaker sound by going 2 speaker vs 4 if you like the overall speaker tone. I use the Axe FX FM-9 with hundreds of cab/speaker IR's and the tonal diff is insane between cab/speaker combos,

If one thing this video has displayed is why the V30 is #1 with hi gain metal. It's very very scooped and will cut through hard. Fricker can go on all he wants about how they're tired and too prevalent in todays music but it is what it is.They're loved by metal especially for a reason. I liked the way the WGS speakers retained the mids, personally. The G12s sounded almost like there was a phase issue?

The speakers in that cab are the 30 watt variant. I was told by someone fairly reliable that they're still essentially just a relabeled 20w GB. To my ears, I can't stand the 65. I bought one from a recommendation, tried it in a 1x12 z cab and hated it, then in a splawn 2x12 with a v30 and it was god awful there (to me) as well. Basically heard the same thing here. The EVH sounded good in all the clips to me. Just one person's opinion, but that amp and that guitar combo worked well in combo with that cab specifically. Great video.

Thanks man! Yeah, the 65's not for everyone, and definitely not for every application. I will say though that when I used to use that 4x12 live, it sounded amazing - probably because the amp was dialed in for those speakers. Thank you for watching!

Mic’ing has a huge influence … … … But based on these samples, the EVH sound nice and full in isolation … but Vintage 30s might sound/work better live or in a mix …

With my miking scheme I’m trying to get as close to the amp in the room sound as I can. It’s not 100% but it’s damn close. That said though, you’re right, miking has a HUGE influence on what we hear. On the Vintage 30’s, I’ve found they work best (for me) for a chunky, slightly more modern kind of crunch as well as some lead stuff. But those G12EVH’s are tough to beat! Thank you for watching!

@@TheGuitarNerdShow I meant, it’s impossible to mic 2 (let alone 4) different mics with the exact same positioning … which can make a very big difference in sound, as you know … so it’s inherently difficult to compare speakers in different cabs, etc

EVH and Vintage 30s are the best with excellent mids response. The guitar cut through better. Did not like the WGS at all.

The WGS doesn’t seem to respond too well with the Jubilee. I’ve used it in other cases, live, where it’s sounded amazing. I might’ve done that speaker a disservice by choosing the Jubilee for this video. Thank you for watching!

Ya know, it's weird - it really is dependent on what I'm playing and what sound I'm going for, amp I'm using etc. For some stuff it sounds fantastic. But I guess that's the case with pretty much everything. Thank you for watching!

They make THE MOST impact on tone hands down. PRS is a salesman first, and full.of shit, secondly!

I’m still firmly in the camp that the amp matters most. Speakers are right up there though. Taking the amp out of the equation then yes definitely, the speakers. I don’t agree that PRS is full of crap. I think Glenn has overblown the whole ‘pickups and wood don’t matter’ thing. I used to believe the same thing until a few years ago. I was playing a Fender Deluxe Strat (made of Ash) and built my second partscaster (Alder). When I put it together I literally relived the pickguard with the electronics from the Ash body and installed it onto the Alder body. Same identical neck (I use the neck from the MIM Deluxe for my builds). After I strung it and set it up I plugged in and the difference was very noticeable. I might not say night and day, but damn close. Enough that my singer at the time (who doesn’t play an instrument) noticed it immediately. The top end was more clear and the overall tone had more girth. At the time I was playing through a Fender Deluxe Reverb with a JHS Angry Charlie when I wanted some drive. So a fairly sparse signal path. So, that stuff does matter too, much more than Glenn and his REQ graphs show. BTW I’ve done three of these Strat builds now. All identical components all the way around. All three sound different from one another. If pickups and wood didn’t matter they’d sound identical. Thank you for watching.
