The sad reality about street skating and why people don't hang out at the street spots anymore I think is because there are so many skateparks been built. It easier to go to a place where you know you always will be able to skate, it will be easy to skate as the environment is adapted for skating, you won't have to deal with unwanted people and you will find familiar faces unlike in the streets, your personality has to be strong enough to deal with all the things, all the risks and all the bullshit which takes a lot of you, but still the gain for yourself is priceless. People had good intentions when the skatepark wave begun like kids will have a place to skate, safe environment and shit, but I personally think it ruined and pretty much killed street skateboarding for masses. Yeah, the technical progression advanced, but the actual street skating downfall. It's so sad when I don't see anyone skating in the streets or street spots anymore.

***** I love to skate in the streets for transport, still so much fun, but I'm in my 40's now, with little time to session, so always choose the skatepark (though that's also because I can ride a bowl for hours, but popping up and down things and having to push kills me within 20 minutes!) it's why I'm kinda stoked on this longboard and cruiser fad. Sure, it's kinda dumb, but at least people are skating in the streets again, and the more people riding some kind of skateboard, being outside, and interacting with the "real world" the better as far as I'm concerned! The way forward is sideways!!!

Well written , totally bums me out to see kids at just park's I think that was part of local govt keeping kids from hutting all the spots like back in the day, they're in a controlled environment now and I think theres alot to be said crusing youre city for skate spots and being on the streets and getting shit from cops security bangers average white collar assholes downtown it builds character , when I was young you could tell the vert dudes from the street dudes we were all a rough street kids, miss those days

I still skate purely street with my brothers. There's nothing better than to push as fast as possible down the street and bomb hills. Skating is all about the experience of roaming the streets. I do agree that skateparka have in a sense stolen the spark of being a skate rat.

Before the tony hawk park building era you had to negotiate just to be able to get a turn to push off at any of the spots in these videos.. That was only like 14 years ago or less.. People who barely had money commuted it from MA and NJ and PA at least twice a week to skate around Manhattan then go to one of a dozen house parties on any give night.. The current skate scene might have more refined skaters but the new skate culture is straight up PC garbage..

We used to call steve Cave Man. He is so fun to skate with. "its not the destination its the journey." A perfect description of Manhattan skating. you got to give him respect. the guy that answered every nyc skateboarder that was like "fucking zoo york is all we have to represent nyc skating?" fuck that shit. steve shows the world the other side of nyc skating.

Driving on the streets in cities is fun, but also fucking dangerous. One lil pebble at the wrong spot, you fly, the cars behind you will roll over you, have fun.

at the end when steve asks "was it up to par?" that says it all. If you consider all the spots and most of the cops and security guards are preoccupied with other shit. there are no excuses. look at the cali dudes. they are paying off cops and security guards. meanwhile the nyc kids have metal coping on every curb. I was talking to tino razo outside of max fish in 2007 and he admitted to me that he couldnt do a slappy. that blew me away. you have fucking metal coping and you cant slappy?
