What I think the teacher meant by love changing the variables, is that the first experiment had a lot of care and a personal stake in it. Victor was bringing back his dog, something he loved dearly and NEEDED to get absolutely right. The second time with the fish, he was forced and had zero connection to the animal. The other children bringing stuff back did it out of desire to show their skill and win a competition rather out of love for the animal. I feel the word love was used to make the plot 'easier' to follow, when it really meant compassion and careful calculations.

These type of movies always brought me back to my childhood. The idea of bringing a pet back is kind of a. Interesting idea actually back. Back when I was a child, my very first pe That my parents gave me. It was Christmas morning. I was about seven years old. When I saw a tank with a little cute, little brown hamster, it was a little girl wine. And I named her buttercup. I loved her very much. She was so cute and fluffy. I would just hold her in my hands, petter, make sure she was taken care of, clean the cage every day. And I wanted to bring her out of the cage a lot. Then my mom thought about a bucket, so she gave me one of those little sand buckets, a yellow one, a yellow, little pale. And I would put buttercup in there with their food and everything, and she would be safe. I would make sure to hold the bucket safe in my arms. She was a wonderful little hamster. I would bring her everywhere with me in the house, even in the bathroom. Mather outside, thou know, never outside. Good hamsters in Connecticut could not survive the cold. It lasted at least for half a year. Unfortunately, though, it didn't survive me. We accidentally killed it. I was very sad that I lost her that. At that moment, I vowed to never, ever go after having a hamster ever again. Life can be so easily killed by a child's love and affection. But if you. But if you choose the right pad for you to love, they will stay with you. That's the thing I'm saying here, though, these kids, when they brought their pets to these powers and everything, Victor did end up bringing Sparky back to life, yes, with the power of love. But compared to the other kids, they just won the win science fair. And I was just not. More like one thing, and that was never good thing. Never. I saw the original one when I was a kid. And honestly, it was kind of scary to me. But I did like it in the end. But this one, I'm giving it 10 thumbs up.

I feel love is used in the same sense as how you put ‘love’ into a creation. You put time and effort into it. Another thing is why the other reanimated animals are weak to electricity, while Sparky isn’t: Sparky has bolts in his neck, which allows him to properly conduct the electricity, something that the other animals do not have.

I feel like the ending is smart in a way that it presents what it truly means to love your animal companion. Victor loved Sparky as his best friend, and not as a science experiment, like all the other kids primarily did, and that’s why all their pets die while Sparky gets to live, because Victor and Sparky actually deserved to be happy here. I also think the message in the end is “It’s okay to want your loved ones to still be with you. You don’t have to let them go as long as they are still in your heart. And if they’re truly in your heart, then they’ll always be alive.” I think if Sparky died in the end, it would have meant that what Victor did to bring him back was wrong, and I honestly don’t think that it really was. He accepted in the end that Sparky would always be in his heart, and Sparky coming back is likely symbolic of that, since it’s saying that if you keep them in your heart, they’ll always be alive in a way. That’s just my take on things, although your idea of a different ending isn’t bad either, I just think this one works well as is, too. Also side note, I think the other experiments died to electricity because they didn’t have a proper way to conduct it, like Sparky probably did with his bolts and wires. I mean, it’s science fiction, so it never really bothered me that things don’t get explained. It just adds to the fun and zaniness of the film.

Plus, i felt the point of the white cat and its owner warning Victor was meant to foreshadow what was to come as it like looking at most movies or shows when you have someone who can see into the future they always foreshadow or leave the main hero on a wild chase that always comes with a price

I dunno, that point about the other creatures being science experiments to the other kids would be something to think about, but the cat wasn't unloved, and it got mixed up in the whole experiment by accident. So it doesn't matter that the girl lost her cat because of a freak accident, but the dog's not allowed to die because his boy loves him? The cat being involved accidentally but still paying the price muddies the metaphor a little for me, that's all.

@@cosmicbreath That’s not a bad point, but the big difference is that the Weird Girl was being carelessly reckless just like the other kids were, and she probably should’ve taken her cat’s safety into account. @@Bethany_Bradley Even if the "love" vs. "experiment" theme works, the more I think about it, the more I still kind of hate the execution? In the end, the children aren't the ones who get punished. It's the animals who suffer needlessly, and that's not portrayed as a tragic thing. Like Steve says, it becomes a "monster movie." And this movie does nothing to curb (and almost perpetuates) the common subconscious idea that no animal life really matters and it's nothing to value or be sad about unless it's a dog. If another dog was among the ones that suffered experiments and painful transformations and still paid the price for the children's apathy, it'd be different, but...

Exactly! I have commented in the last part explaining that putting love in a project (art or science) can make a huge difference in the results. I also believe that the animals had different results of being vicious (besides being nods to different horror movies) would be that missing variable as well as the result of messing with the nature of life and death. Sparky was a special case as he was a dog taken too soon from his family. While it would have been better if Sparky stayed dead by the end and Victor moves on...I can't help but feel that it may happen later on. While we see him live by the end of the film, Sparky will likely pass as Victor grows up and he (Victor) will see that this is no way for his dog to live as Sparky will likely still rot and fall apart and they can only stitch him up so much. Sparky will die knowing he was loved and will be grateful to spend more time with Victor and his family if not just for a bit longer.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt bad for the cat. As for the lack of love on the experiments. There is a kernel of truth in that. If you are passionate about something, you tend to put extra effort or double and triple check your variables. Since Victor was later blackmailed into bringing the goldfish back to life, he wasn't as careful as I bet he was with Sparky.

I think the only reason I would say I prefer the ending where Sparky comes back to life again is because of the awful and brutal way he “dies” again. Having Victor trying to move on from Sparky enduring ANOTHER traumatic death wouldn’t be as fulfilling. Having your dog die from being hit by a car, then dying again from being trapped by a fire, isn’t really a “I can heal and move on from this” type of ending. I could understand if it was something like Sparky naturally running out of electricity and Victor realizing that perpetually trying to keep Sparky alive did more harm than good, but two brutal deaths of the same character is just too depressing for kids. Especially because all the other animals terrorizing the town wasn’t Victor’s fault, it was the other children’s fault for blackmailing Victor (well, one of them anyways) and then getting too greedy. I think the good ending is well deserved, but that’s just my opinion and I respect yours.

I agree with you on the ending (and with poor Mr. Whiskers' fate). The movie showed animals being brought back to life unwillingly and Victor's really lucky that Sparky still has his personality and loves him after being revived. Imagine how scary it would be if Sparky came back ala Church from Pet Sematary. I liked the idea that Victor would finally accept death for what it is and move on with having human friends and (if he was ready) get a new dog to create new memories with them.

These words at 4:35 really hit me. Right at this moment I'm having to struggle with the fact that my cat, that has been with me for the last 17 years, is going to pass soon, since she developed a tumor on her nose which weakened her a lot. Everyday I wake up with the fear that she might not be alive anymore, and I know that every day that pass is one day less I have with her. It's an horrible situation and I just don't know how I'll do after she passes, she has been my company, my friend on good and bad times since so long, and I'm just not ready for it. Idk if it sounds silly, it's just a cat I think might be what most people think, but I don't really care, she's special to me, and it hurts so much that she's probably a few days, weeks at best, from passing. The words said in this video really stuck with me tho. At least in my memories she will still be alive.

I might be misremembering, but I think in the Hispanic dubbed version the teacher tells Victor that the experiment was different because of variables instead of love. And I thought that made a lot of sense, because even if they followed the same procedure exactly, they were using different animals each time (and the fish was in water). So it made sense that the teacher said that it was the variables which caused the many different results.

Ever since first seeing it, I always thought this film DESPERATELY needed an epilogue or something. Like, what's that Weird Girl's reaction to the fact that her fur baby is gone? In the original short Sparky is the only dead pet running around and all the townsfolk are scared of him and want him dead until he saves Victor from the burning windmill. It feels kinda like the other kids all resurrecting their pets was added to make it long enough to be a full length movie and having them all be evil was just added for extra conflict. It makes it seem less realistic that the townsfolk would bring him back after what all the other pets did.

Love your videos, you do a great job in your reviews and you add a level of humor at times that still makes me laugh. I would like to weigh in on one thing though. The result with the fish being explained by love, I personally think it's not literally cuz he doesn't love it but rather that when doing the experiment with sparky he put a lot of care and effort into the experiment but with the fish he just wanted to rush through it and get it over with. So he changed the variables altering the result. It's like when people say that a meal was prepared with love it doesn't literally mean love was put in it but rather that it was made with a great deal of care and effort and that can alter and be experienced in the end result. That's my opinion anyways but I could also just be blowing hot air so take that for what you will.

Understand wanting the mature ending, it would sound better... But in this movie ... Not trying to reresurrect Sparky would be weird. It isn't shown as far as I remember why he shouldn't be alive, is not like Sparky is suffering, or breaking the natural order have anything going bad because of him

I do agree that Sparky should've stayed dead at the end of the film. Perhaps they could've added the detail of despite the animals being resurrected, they felt some pain which suggests that it's better that they stayed dead and Victor voluntarily allows Sparky to peacefully die on his own terms after saving the day instead of a freak accident

there is a little explenation as to why some of the monsters are harmed by electricty but not sparky, or why some of them basically go on a rampage, the science teacher says it "you changed the variable" sometimes even one little thing can change everything

Because, variables for sparky and everything else is different, all it takes is one difference to completely change everything. From animals, stichings, bolts and how long animals were deceased for or if they were at all.

IMO the only thing stopping this movie from being great is the choice to bring Sparky back after he dies again. It was ALMOST a great commentary on accepting loss and death. I was very disappointed that they didn’t go “Old Yeller” by letting him die, but Victor gets one of the puppies.

The cat being psychic was supposed to be for shadowing that bringing back sparky would lead to big things. Like she said if the cat has a dream it means something big is gonna happen. And when sparky is braught back it leads to a giant animal zombie throw down.

Honestly I like the whole 'love is a variable' bit in science. Its not entirely untrue; as scientists a lot of energy and concern goes into ensuring biased results/reporting doesn't happen, and love as a variable feels like a fantastical extension of that issue. But I think I'd prefer the ending to be 'the cars can help Sparky 'wake up' but cannot bring him back to life for long, so Victor and Sparky have to/get to say goodbye.'. That, in my opinion, would actually take on the concept of death and having to cope with it while allowing the characters a moment of mercy in that they get to say goodbye to each other. It might be cheesy but most often the reality of losing a pet seems to be having to put them down, and the closure of having a goodbye is something a kid could actually benefit from having been modeled by a piece of media. But I really dislike how the other pets were treated, especially the cat. Its too calloused/mean in my opinion, and it would have been a stronger movie if Victor bonded with the other children because they had lost pets and upon learning that Victor lost Sparky reached out to him with empathy due to having experienced that pain themselves.

Ironically, real sea monkeys (or at least their "wild" cousins") are brine shrimp that are almost exclusively found in saline lakes. Makes the scene of a sea monkey exploding from salty popcorn all the more amusing.

My thoughts on why the fish turns invisible is because it was brought back to life while it was in water, though at the same time that wouldn't make any sense because the sea monkeys were also brought back to life in water and they weren't invisible.

I 100% agree Sparky should have stayed dead in the end, the ending always bothered me, Victor learned absolutely nothing from this whole experience. I remember hoping they would change the ending for this remake and being very disappointed when they didn't. Keeping Sparky alive makes Victor's story a bit pointless.

This is definitely one of my favorite Tim Burton films. Not his best, but still very good! You can tell he put a lot of love into this movie. And while I do agree the ending was a bit of a cop out, and Sparky staying dead would have had a better message, I think Burton made it like that because that's the kind of ending he probably would have wanted to see as a kid. And it's very apparent that this movie was made mostly for him. And personally, I don't mind the ending. It's nice to have a monster movie with a happy ending once in a while. lol
