Steve, Eydie, Sammy and Carol Salute Irving Berlin

Ойын-сауық

Great Special from the mid-1970s. A Salute to Irving Berlin.
The opening medley is incredible. Of course, Steve Lawrence and Eydie Grome do a great duet to close the show.
In between Carol Burnett joins Eydie in a sort of military themed medley. Sammy Davis joins Steve for a medley of Irving Berlin songs made famous by Fred Astair. Pianist Oscar Peterson also has a standout performance.
Note: During this show, Sammy sings Alexander's Ragtime taking it from the minstrel in blackface to disco. Some people may find this offensive.

What has to all of us? We have gone straight in to the toilet. Back then everything was about class, dignity, integrity and pure wholesome entertainment. Now its all about swearing, talking about body parts, hating each other. This clip is an escape when my life was surrounded by classy acts and extraordinary human beings.

Well, Steve is now with his sweetie. Hope they sing to the heavens forever. Thanks for the music. This show is too much...in a great way.

Eydie Gorme was a powerhouse as a singer, so was Sammy Davies,Jr. as an all-around entertainer. How glad and proud I am to have enjoyed (and still enjoy) listening and watching artists of this caliber as this four ones. Oscar Peterson was a great jazz pianist and was influenced by the great Nat "king" Cole on singing. They don't make them anymore.

We lost Steve on March 7, 2024. So sad. I heard he was really sick by his son David. It must really take a toll. In the beginning he said it was in the early stage and that medicine had slowed it down. RIP Steve your with Eydie now. You always looked so lost without her.

And Beverly Sills. Watch Carol's rendition of Send in the Clowns on her show (my favorite tv show of all time) in a sketch. I defy anyone else to sing it better - including my beloved Barbra.

I was always wondering why Sammy had never had them on the 60th anniversary show. They were in the audience. Stevie Wonders sings I've got to me. When Steve recorded it and Sammy made it a hit.

There were a lot of people in the audience who you would think should have been on stage. I wondered about I've Got to Be Me, too. It must have been pretty hard to stand in front of a friend and sing when he couldn't sing anymore. Maybe Steve just couldn't do it

The original context of "Suppertime" was that of an African American woman whose husband had been lynched, and she didn't know how to break the news to her children. Irving Berlin wrote the song for Ethel Waters to sing in the 1933 Broadway revue "As Thousands Cheer".

28:11 Just yesterday I was singing "I Love a Piano." Came to me out of the clear blue. Don't know why, but there it was tripping off my lips. And then Eydie says this! I love these kinds of coincidences.

Listening and watching this on 14/05/24 Israel’s 76th Independence Day is cathartic on this more than sombre occasion due to the atrocity inflicted upon us on 7/10/23 by a marauding heinous entity called Hamas. A Jew who went by the name of Irving Berlin having escaped with his family similar outrage in another land brought happiness and joy to a nation through his genius talent of words and music. May “Blue Skies” prevail through these very dark days.
