I missed Nita being bred as well. I’m so glad you’ll have her baby, she’s a special girl. My QH mare lived to 34, so you’ve got lots of time with her still. Oh, keeping Jimmy, and hopefully Chevy as well, makes me glad as well. Oh, I can’t wait for Nita to foal! Good days ahead😊. I typed my rope halter wrong for a long time, I’m embarrassed to say. My farrier told me twice before it stuck, what I was doing wrong. Now it’s habit. Tie to the “post” he kept saying 😂. It’s really much simpler to tie correctly than to tie it wrong. I kept thinking that can’t be right because it felt to simple!

Top tips: Am not a horse person, but just love your videos - they make me feel like we're family and I watch every minute, no matter how long and love them! Have seen a few other horse videos from other "horse people" and the ears on their horses are back a lot of the time, including when they are praising them, even if the praise is only verbal. Please do a tip video on why you want the ears to be forward, why it's so important to correct unrequested forward motion, why you should stroke rather than pat the horse, why you don't use treats, why pain is the worst motivator, the importance of getting the horse to put his head down (relax), and why so many horse people walk right beside their horses rather than like you do - use a long line? It's almost like using a loose leash for dog training. How do you instill in people to have that loose leash - why it's so important? Am guessing that could be multiple tip videos, but you talk about those things in almost every one, just thought it might be great for a short, concise, all in one top tips video. You know like a greatest hits with all the background music, right? Hope that helps.

Hi Both, I have a few of these ties (as you know from when you visited Nev) and I love them. Years ago I bred a horse who panicked every time he was tied up. In the end it became a game for him, he would slowly pull back to find the pressure then pull hard to snap whatever gave first. I went through so many headcollars and ropes that in the end I just didn't tie him, I just looped the rope through the string. I found a safety tie (equiping) that was a game changer, the game had gone so he didn't pull back anymore, unless he was genuinely scared, as there was no snap of rope, clip etc. The Ping was good but these safety ties are a massive game changer! Also you mentioned about the nylon 'normal' headcollars, if I put them on the mares, they know it and know they can pretty much go where they like unless it has a solid ring at the bottom and not one the moves along the back of the noseband. Love the 'tips' videos Steve, Been watching you since lock down and came to the demo at Malthouse. Your techniques are so helpful especially for me with my opinionated Welsh pony. You asked for requests for your tips videos. Maybe you could do a short series on things like, backing them away and respecting your space and how to correctly use your long line. ( I've just moved to a new yard and everyone leads the old way, ie. By the shoulder. Then one about disengagement, this technique has helped so much especially with lowering the head and neck. You could explain how and why it works, especially for people who have never seen your methods. I am an old lady (😮) with a 5 Yr old pony and I can confirm that your methods have got us out of sticky situations a few times. Keep up the fabulous work Steve and Tanya and Charlotte and thank you from the bottom of my heart x ❤

I bought 4 of your ties. I gave two to my friend for her trailer and I use the other two. I absolutely love them. I had been using the blocker tie ring before but found I prefer yours, less clangy metal and more options for the level of pull. I like the videos of training tips as there are so many little things we can learn that can have a big impact on achieving a higher level of horsemanship and safety.

Such a good video... Trying to convince my friends why I already use them everywhere... And they often get one as Birthday/Christmas present. Please do a video on siding up .....I have watched but often Steve is up on a fence....Mounting block and you cant actually see what he is doing on the off side!!!! Keep up the good work.

Love your videos. Always so informative. As for possible video tip ideas, the main important training tips you think would be beneficial broken down by when you should do to them. Broken by say things you would recommend working: daily, every couple of days, once a week, and once a month or so.

This is great, absolutely simple and I can totally see. Now i'd LOVE to see something this simplified for leg and body positions when riding. Horse owners in my area seem to not know much about this stuff or something. The horses around here are hand fed, in your space, and just little untrained stinkers. I've just been training the pushy ones to back up and give space and quite being nippy. No one knows one eye two eye it seems either. One poor horse was running away from everyone and they tried for 6 months to make friends with him with carrot bribes and he only improved a tad. I tried one eye two eye with him and was able to stand with him and groom him in about 10 minutes. He's not actually wild, he was tame at one point but left alone for years and got fearful I guess (he's rescued so we don't know his whole history). Anyway, he's not the aggressive type and not a feral so he could learn fast with the right method. Kinda sad though, I'm on my own here, there's no one to ask. I am doing volunteer work at a horse rescue locally. They get good food and quarters but no one knows the behavioral treatments.

The knot you use to tie up the halter is a modified SHEET BEND. Normally used to join two ropes of unequal sizes. Normally the loop is made of the thicker rope. You have modified it by using the thin loop tied in the harness and passing the thicker rope (double rope) through the loop. I remember how two tie this knot by - the snake come out of his hole at the base of a tree, around the back of the tree and under his own tail. This knot can be google searched as SHEET BEND.

Tanya you have a very nice voice for narration, I think. Have you considered auditioning for the BBC?

Ordered two ties from you and use them , love them, highly recommend them! Can be used everywhere for quick easy tie-up and don’t have to thread ropes. Saw someone use a clip on a hitching post using a tie ring (probably Steve’s video) instead of the old fashioned knots. Also, I inherited a horse who panics and cannot be tied up anywhere and I plan to install a clip somewhere extra safe to see if we may have a chance to fix this issue. 🐴🤠

Yep. I've got a couple of the ties from you Steve and very happy with them. Just a question......when travelling a horse which headcollar would you use? I travel my horses in double trailer with the partition out so they get to move their feet and wedge themselves on either side. Just wondering if I tied too loose they might be able to turn round. I've a last new horse arrive today so will be doing the ground work with her after she's settled in. Should mention I only travel one at a time.

I don't have a horse, so my questions should be lower in priority. I am curious about the different ways Steve touches a horse to "let it know how good it is." I've noticed he touches different locations for this, too. Does Steve breathe out or anything else when he is trying to show the horse he "is a good guy?" I understand why it's better to avoid patting or slapping the horse to let it know you're pleased, but maybe Steve could include that in a talk about the nonverbal communication he does so a horse will understand when it is succeeding. Also, Steve says he makes sure to think about the positives because horses are able to read us better than we can read each other. What other ways are there to make sure his mind is in the right place so the horse can read his intentions?

I just love your videos I'm obsessed haha, I've recently got my first shared loan and he's been allowed some bad habits. Although a complete novice I've been working on space and disengaging his hind quarters etc He's a bugger for snacking when in work mode and throws his head down when riding any tips on those habits? Love the tip video! I’m still unsure how the spliced lead rope would attach to the rope halter without a clip. Do you need to untie a part of the rope halter? I’ve not worked with them before.

Before anyone says it, yes I know Chevy is a Quarter Horse. That being said he's also a pinto (perfectly acceptable in the AQHA). His stockings come above the knees which qualifies him as a pinto. He is gorgeous. Plus, I can't wait to see Nita's foal in the spring

Hi Steve. How can you tell the difference between a horse being curious and a horse pushing on you (i.e. moving you) when she leans over the stable door. (not during feeding just when you are in the stables)?

Dear Tanya & Steve can you do a short video on how tie a western saddle girth? My horse is Friesian/Paint blend 17 hand and a typical Friesian stance hold head high and super difficult to find a saddle with a tree (traditional) that fits so I ended up buying a treeless saddle (western style), I know you’ll laugh its designed and made in German go figure and it for endurance riding but devil if I can remember how to tie the western girth (you know the way you go in twice and tie off). I bought the saddle in Canada hahaha…

I haven't been around horses since I was young, and it was not often enough. I never had real training, so I live vicariously through you. My question is about the horses who are being worked with indoors. They're tied with both sides of the harness (or bridle) attached across to walls on either side of the head. They aren't able to turn, or drop, their head. I would think this is not only uncomfortable, but if they're frightened, there's no movement. Why do they tie them like this? Do they not trust the horse? I've never heard Steve comment on this.

Nita couldn't be bother. Love those kind of horses. Put a nylon halter on one arm with a eyes closed. Them on the other car put a rope halter on. Which one is lighter and would you rather wear for hrs on end

I put a rope halter on my mare and she was immediately more responsive with far less pressure. She never wears it unless we are together. I never leave on a regular halter either.

Can you demonstrate how you use these safety ties in a trailer ?

I work with equine therapy here in Southern California. We have a pony we got recently that is very mouthy. Since we have to walk directly by his head during sessions we have had a difficult time training him to keep his mouth off of us. We can’t correct him much while having a client on him but have tried to gain respect doing ground work prior. He knows the corrections are limited while a student is on his back. How do we correct this bad behavior?

I am not Steve, and hopefully he answers you, but to me it sounds like you need to work on him respecting your space. Work on that thru groundwork from a distance like Steve does, and once the horse understands that well, you can start moving and holding the lead much closer. But keep the idea in mind that even when you are holding him more closely, he still has to respect your space, and when he doesn’t you back him, or disengage him just like you will on a longer rope. Do all of this without a rider, and when it is solid, put an experienced rider on him and continue the same process. If he reaches out with his mouth, make him back up across the ring, or disengage 10 times. It’s really still all about respecting your space, even if you have chosen to move in closer to him.

I bought halter, rope and ties from SYH (and a flag and bonging stock 🤩). I'm wondering about how to use the tie in a trailer...it's there a risk they could pull the rope back so far they could turn? Another question ..my horse was tired with the rope and tie bit I'm guessing not heavy enough as she spooked, pulled the rope all the way through and got away (a short distance). Is she likely to learn from this as she would from breaking free?

ive had one of these for years,with a rope halter,wouldnt use anything else,i have it on the double loop only because if she sees a blade of grass she will pull out to eat it lol..i could do with a new halter but finding a 'real' one is proving to be a minefield,could i ask were you source yours please

Hi I have a question. I have a mare .She is lovely and stand nicely in the stable but sometimes I have to tie her from both side of her halter if there is other horses there for security (I will tell the owner about the safety ties!). Never pull back. Now to give her a shower outside I have to tie her from under the halter on the big bar you know as we can see in western movies. I am not really tie her just put the lead around the bar once. I am scared that if she ever pulls back she will get hurt. So I do not tie the lead. But this at home. If I go on a ride and have to stop somewhere for a little while and have to tie her and she gets afraid of something and pull I swear I will panick. How do I show a horse not to pull ? If she never did (she is 7 now) does it means she is OK? Thanks

Rope headcollars great for small ponies as there is not much space on their little heads for tack... also... easy to put through the WASH! Webbing headcollars always look mucky

Why can't I hear you?

Even in countries were they are common, not many people know how to tie a rope halter. This demo is far from a waste of time.

These ties are just not helpful for my cat. Once the harness is on, the legs don't work so tying up the cat is quite useless. The end of the rope is a fun toy, but only once the harness is off.😂😂😂😂

The nylon halters are just terrible. I see so many without any breakaways…

Don’t care for Jimmy. Really like Chevy though.
