I lived in the same neighborhood with Steuart in No Arlington, VA in the late 90's early 2000s. I think he was working with Shawn at the time. He would walk his dog by my house and we got to be friends. When he was asked to join the Eagles he mentioned that Gibson was providing him with the White double-neck guitar for Hotel California. Just after that, the Eagles came to DC and Steuart told me that he had been "working" on Hotel California and would be showcasing the new guitar at the show. My wife and I went and it was very cool to see him appear on stage with his new guitar. Speaking of guitars. I was in a local Guitar Center and "shopping" around (as guitar players do), and I came across a Godin Acousticaster that had a Fender Neck. I thought, How Cool. The guitar tech there told me it had been owned by Steuart and he had brought it in sell it. Well, of course, I bought it and the next time Steuart walked his dog, I brought it out to show him. He was like, "What are you doing with that!" LOL. It was very fun to know it was true and we had that connection. I have not talked with him lately but did see him on stage at the recent Eagles Hotel California Tour, this past August in DC. (If you know anything tunes he played that guitar on, I'd love to know.) Thanks for your review of Steuart, he is a great guitarist and a really nice guy

It was weird. Eagles played Baltimore and at end of show. They introduced each player and then they say from Maryland Stewart that’s it. I thought they say hometown guy. Snd he would do a little. Jam. But. They seemed cold on him. It was weird

Loved this. Had the pleasure and good fortune of seeing the Eagles in Glasgow not long before Glenn's heartbreaking passing, and it was mind-blowing, so much so that me and my good friend almost shed a tear at the exact same moment, both completely in awe of what we were watching. Steuart & Joe Walsh had such amazing chemistry.

Every single time I get a notification for one of these episodes, I’m NEVER let down by the guest. You’d think that every once in a while I’d see a name and be like, “Meh, I’ll catch it later...maybe.” Nope, every one is a must watch now. Great picks Zac! 🤘🏼

Steuart Smith is the best guitarist I have ever seen! I saw him for the first time with the Eagles at their Phoenix show last week on the 19th Jan. I bought another ticket just after the show for their second night in Phoenix on the 20th, just to watch Steuart closer this time!

Steuart is definitely NOT a pedal geek. What a great interview, whether you are a guitar player or not. Steuart is so modest and humble, yet so willing to answer the questions in great detail.

I was the opening act for Rodney at the Tulsa Fair in the early 90s.......Steuart asked if I could leave my Twin on the stage so he didnt have to drag his off the bus..........then he walked out on stage and pluged a strat straight in with a COIL cord and then killed me for 90 minutes.

This guy is my fav ever guitarist. People say the Eagle should have made him an Eagle but I'm more happy Steuart has been free to venture into so many other avenues that he wouldn't have been able to do if he was tied to the Eagles.

Just saw Steuart with the Eagles on their last tour before COVID. I paid extra for seats close to the stage, and it was a fantastic show. Deacon Frey and Vince Gill filled in for Glen Frey, and they were great. Although the Eagles have played their repertoire thousands of times to their adoring fans all over the world, they still put on a fabulous concert that brings down the house. During the two and a half hours, both Joe Walsh and Steuart played all those iconic Eagles solos that we all know so well. No matter how many times I hear them, I never get tired of them because they're so beautiful. He's a supremely great virtuoso guitarist who is high up on my list of all-time favourite players.

Interesting interview… I first saw Steuart playing with Rodney Crowell at the Grand in Wilmington. I was struck by his use of a thumb pick as well as how well he played. I later noticed him off stage right (or left?) with the Eagles! Nothing more needs to be said… one of the greats!

What a creative player Steuart is. I loved Steuart's playing so much on the Rosanne Cash and Rodney Crowell records. I remember buying Rosanne's Kings Record Shop on cassette and loved Steuart's blend of country, rock and blues influenced playing. And we all know his work now with The Eagles. He is one of the reasons I argued jokingly with people at country gigs that you don't necessarily need a Tele for Chicken pickin'. I've always referenced Steuart Smith. He has to be such an influence on many players. I know he always has been an influence for a wannabe like me, especially the thumb pick style. This interview is a treasure. So great Zac. Thanks!

It would be so great to see Marty Stuart or his band members like Kenny Vaughan or Chris Scruggs on the show. They have many stories to tell and are just absolute experts in the world of country music.

A wonderful interview with a truly gifted musician. Made my day! I saw one of the Shawn Colvin trio shows way back when it first aired. One of the best performances I’d ever seen. Stuart did a masterful job in covering a plethora of parts from “A Few Small Repairs.” He’s a player for all seasons.

Steuart.. you rocked Edinburgh 22 night before last… Why didn’t you stop to take a bow with the others..? You are a member of the band ? Right ? Zac the only downside to these videos is the fact that I'm up all night watching them ....that aside , is there any better musician / pleasant person to communicate with than Steuart Smith ....great interview as always Zac 👍

That crazy for leaving solo changed my life as a guitarist. I learned more of my guitar style from that Diamonds and Dirt record than from any other record. I owe much of my whole approach to Steuart. And I tell everybody... and he's still such and underground hero. He's the guitarists guitarist. Like Jack Pearson, or Big Al Anderson. The best, and fairly unknown to this day. I watched him rock the middle strat pickup forward and back to create a tremolo sound at The Lynden WA fair on the Keys to the Highway tour. He talks about top 100, well Steuart, you are in my top 5 most influential guitarists. Now I'm lucky enough to be playing your parts again working with Brady Seals. Natural Born Lovers solo is one of my favorites, and I get to play it live!

You know what... growing up in a very remote part of Canada in the 70's & 80's... I was learning (or trying to learn) everything I could get my hands on. We started to get Austin City Limits broadcast to our TV's some time in the mid to late 80's I believe, and that's where I got to see (and record on VHS) as many guitar players as I could! It was my KZread of the day... I got to record Dwight with Pete Anderson, I remember recording Verne Gosden and he had a tremendous strat picker with him in that show, and Rodney Crowell was on there... Steuart Smith blew my mind! I even started to learn to play with a thumb pick after that... (though I went back to flat pick and fingers to this day) but, even though I went crazy over SRV, those ACL tapes made me learn more diverse stuff than I ever would have gotten exposed to. But Stew's solos on "Stars on the water", or "Gain control again"... that solo was amazing, and I tried to learn every note of it... when he rolls the volume back and plays like a kettle drum / xylophone thing at the end... amazing! I hope Steuart reads this comment, because he was a huge influence on me! All the guitar parts in "Many a long and lonesome highway" by Rodney... brilliant! I holed up in my room for days... learning every last note! Great guy... and great player! So glad you did this interview!

A true master of his instrument ! I'm a big fan ! I play in an Eagles Tribute band ( I'm Joe in the band ) and I am not surprised about the pressure he has playing with The Eagles, no room to create your own solos . 1 note off and guy playing air guitar in the audience catches you . That was simply brilliant analogy that I can relate to ! Well said !

I used to catch Steuart Smith play with the band Babe. They played at Mr. Henry's Tenley Circle in D.C. This was the early 70's, always thought Steuart was fabulous. I was so glad to hear he joined the Eagles. Couldn't have happened to a more humble and talented musician.

I saw Steuart the first time playing with Rodney at Gruene Hall outside of San Antonio. I was 6 feet from him the entire show and blown away. Been a huge fan ever since. Thanks for a great interview!!

Great interview…I saw Steuart a few time with Nils in 81 and was blown away with Stewart’s playing and to see two very unique guitar players was a special experience for me being at the time a young inspired guitar player…and I to play with a thumb pick 😂

A(nother) master player! Much respect for Steuart Smith. And in the gear-head dept., I appreciated hearing about the different Strats, and that one was a humble MIM. I just watched the whole thing through again (about three months later)...and again; what a great player, and what a great interview!

Thank you for this interview. I've known Steuart for many years in the DC area and we still chat today. I'm not surprised that he doesn't remember the gig he did with Nils at the Roxy, given how many venues he's played over the years. But there was indeed a Roxy nightclub just outside of Georgetown. The stage was very high off the ground and the patrons had to climb a huge flight of stairs from the entrance just to get into the nightclub. Great club for DC acts.

Thanks Zach. I've been waiting for an interview with Steuart for years. He's the reason I took up playing with a thumbpick. I haven't quite mastered it yet but that little intro piece from Rosaeanne Cash"s great tune will help me I'm sure. Wonderful interview. Kudos!

The thumbpick approach can be a tough technique to really get under your...well...thumb (no pun intended 🤦🏼‍♂️). However, it is more than worth it once you do. Having the pick independent of your other four fingers gives you more flexibility and possibilities than any other setup. Keep practicing with it and you’ll be more than glad you did! Happy picking, brother 🤘🏼

Thank you for a wonderful interview. Steuart is probably my favourite guitar player, along with Nils Lofgren. First saw him on a Scottish TV Special with Rodney Crowell, and his sensitive playing and amazing licks took my breath away. His solo on " I don't know why" by Shawn Colvin on a live radio broadcast could bring a tear to your eye. He was so humble and interesting during the interview. 2hrs 20mins of gold.

This was a fascinating interview for me. Long-time Eagles fan, and discovered Steuart on the Eagles Farewell 1 tour. I've been curious about him for a while now and this interview answered a lot of questions.

I really do want to thank you for doing this interview with Steuart. I've been waiting a long time for this and you did a superb job. Ever since I first saw and heard him play in 1980-81, I knew he was heading for bigger and better things, and I told him so the night he came to our apartment with his buddy, Johnny Castle. Steuart is one of those kind that are so amiable and modest that you can't help but love the guy, and everyone who's played and worked with him will tell you the same thing.

Thanks for posting. Steuart Smith is one of my all-time favorite guitar players. Everything I have ever heard him play has always been so tasteful. That includes sessions, stuff with with Rodney Crowell, Rosanne Cash, the Cicadas, on and on, etc, etc. Tasteful, that's him. I could listen to his guitar playing all night. For an example, check out his guitar playing on the album The Cicadas, if you can find it. Tasteful...very tasteful.

Brilliant interview, interview subject and very brilliant interviewer. He covered every angle that I was hoping he would. So well informed!

My favorite guitarist! I try to model my playing very much off of his and Joe’s.

I'd already seen Steuart's name on album credits, when I saw him with Rosanne and Jimbo Hanson on bass, as a trio in Boulder CO probably '91 or 92 and became a big fan. His playing and ideas were fabulous and still are!

I saw the Eagles in Buffalo, NY a few years ago. I’ve always liked the Eagles but never paid much attention to the band members. When I saw the Eagles “live” I was blown away by his talent. He nailed every signature lick and solo all night long.

Sadly my 1st time hearing Mr. Smith was in the Eagles movie. Being a Felder fan I remember wanting to hate him then they showed him playing that crazy music man double neck and it was impossible not to dig it…dammit! It burned my lips to say at the time but he played circles around every guitar player the Eagles ever had…another amazing interview

I know that you are not an Eagle, but you are in my book Steuart. You are extremely talented and it is obvious to me that you have a lot more class than Don Felder. Best wishes for you going forward.....

great interview. i was completely blown away by his e9 pedal steel emulation late in the interview. absolutely beautiful. i was wondering if he was going to mention his use of peavey classic 50 4-10s with the eagles tour. unique choice given he basically could have used anything he wanted. that particular amp has been probably my fav of the amps i have used over the years from a versatility perspective and they are tough as nails. I remember i was excited to see such a wonderful and knowledgeable player share my appreciation for them.

Steuart won't remember me, but we spoke a couple of times when he played at the Childe Harold, the club I was working at in Washington DC. I believe it was 1976 when I was 21. He was playing in a band called Babe and was already a monster. I was learning my Strat and he showed me a whole new universe. A lovely young man.

there is so little info around on this guy, so damn good, there is that vid of him playing 7 year ache with RC and he does those pedal steel pinch harmonics! so good!

Yes there was a Roxy in DC, Connecticut and M st nw below Dupont circle. Used to be called the Saba Club. Saw lots of shows there. Saw Switchblade with Steuart at the Wax museum, Bayou etc 35 years ago or so.

Mark Knopfler, Richard Thompson, Buddy Miller, Steuart Smith. The most amazing part of The Wheel is the part he does in the middle.

Great interview. I learned about Steuart from my father, Tom Hines who was a painter in the DC area and told me about this great guitar player he used to paint for. My dad would say to me, "You would love to talk with Steuart." This is a great channel.

Always best to keep your mouth shut and crank out as much money to be earned from this unique opportunity. Felder was constantly trying to get Walsh to line his vote against Glen and Don. Felder always maintained an undertone of resentment etc. What a great job Steuart is doing.

Eagles and Joni Mitchell are mentioned in Dave McGowan's interviewins on KZread. Very VERY interestin. I wonder how much Steuart knew about all of it durin his participation with them.

Wait till you hear his solo on Flamingo/Spanish Acoustic guitar solo on Roseanne Cash's, The Way We Make A Broken Heart? He sounds truly a professional musician with some zesty humor and you can even see him on the video. That man is awesome! Out of this world. 💖👀💖 I will find him, when I record my songs, lol Google search, Harry Broker 😎

I have a ‘57 esquire that my Dad bought at an unclaimed freight store in 1957.
