Jimmy Olander of Diamond Rio - Truetone Lounge

Музыка

Jimmy Olander's opening lick on Diamond Rio's "Meet In The Middle," let the listener know that they were about to hear something new. His double-bender meets banjo fingerstyle sensibilities created a singular sound that would lead off most of the band's hits over the next 3 decades. Today, we sit down with Jimmy in his home studio and get the full story of his climb from out-of-work banjo player, to double bender Tele man with multi-platinum success. Jimmy also gives us the inside scoop on his Joe Glaser-built Telecaster style guitars, and how he began using Matchless amps.

Diamond rio has songs that say soooo much! I hope the younger generation finds your music, you all are truly awesome! Just listened to you in Wichita ks. Right before Christmas 2022, you guys still impress! Nowhere bound, Kentucky mine, don’t forget to pray for me..can’t get enough!

Jimmy told me he played Matchless amps many years ago when in an autograph line at the National FFA Convention. I skipped all the other members of the group just to have time to talk guitar stuff with Jimmy Olander. I was an Agriculture Teacher in need of another amp because my solid state Yamaha G212 was giving me trouble. As my students were getting autographs, I was talking Matchless amps with Jimmy. I was in guitar heaven. I had never heard of Matchless but when I got back home in Alabama I called my friend that worked in a prominent Atlanta music store and bought a DC30. I’ve been able to visit with Jimmy 3 times and he was always gracious.

I played banjo and acoustic guitar in that same show at Fiesta Texas in the mid 90’s when it was owned by Opryland. The guy who’d fly in from TN would tell me Jimmy played this same show. Even as a banjo player he knew I’d be a Jimmy O fan. I wasn’t smart enough to touch a telecaster until a few years ago. Over the years banjo has made me tens of dollars.

My dad was in the house band at Kewadin Casino in the early 90's. Diamond Rio came through and were playing in the other room. I remember standing in a room off the side of the stage listening to Jimmy O's Matchless just CRANKING. Killer tone. Monster player! I was in heaven! I could have stayed in there all night!!

Such a humble guy. The Brent Mason story is great. I met Jimmy at a state fair gig in '93. He let me hang out with him for about a half hour pre show backstage. He was humble and pleasant then and obviously still is. I'm not surprised.

Wow. An afternoon with Jimmy Olander. What an awesome opportunity. Thanks for dragging us along Zac. This was maybe my favorite interview of ANY musician, ever. But I'm a big fan of Diamond Rio and Jimmy O. I was bouncing around bar stages when Diamond Rio hit the charts. I can remember spending hours in the band bus trying to figure out how to play those parts without the benders. Sometimes I was able to do it, sometimes not. My best was Mirror, Mirror but it took me A LOT of hours practicing to get those lead licks down. Thanks again! This brought back some great memories for me, and I'm hoping some good memories for Mr. Olander as well.
