Thanks, Zac, and for the links! I'm really happy to learn more about Steuart Smith's work. You filled in some gaps for me. I became a big fan through his work with Rodney, Rosanne, and Vince.
I had seen Rodney Crowell years ago when Diamonds and Dirt came out. I remember he had an incredible lead man who played a white strat. At the time I was a budding guitar player, so I was deeply impressed with his playing....stood out! Never could remember who it was. This video now answers that mystery. Thanks you Zac for this video. It has always bugged me!
Great to see you here Zac. Your depth of knowledge is incredible. A true musicologist!

Saw the Eagles last week. Steuart was great! He nailed those parts and solos flawlessly.
Just discovered you, Zak. Your encyclopedic knowledge of all things guitar is fascinating. Being a total guitar nerd I can't get enough of it. Also, thanks for demonstrating the James Burton lick. I've head him play it many times and was too lazy to figure it out. Thanks for doing the work. And keep 'em coming. Too much is not enough,

First saw Steuart Smith with Rodney Crowell's band "The Dixie Pearls" in 1988. Then he was a member of Rodney's other band project "Cicadas". Steuart is a fine musician. His guitar playing never disappoints. The current lineup of The Eagles are very fortunate to have his him on board.

Been a huge fan of Steuart's playing since first hearing him on "Diamonds and Dirt". Saw him play live a few times with both Rodney and The Eagles, but I'll never forget the time he showed up at a bar in Virginia where Bill Kirchen was gigging. I was rapping to Bill when he saw Steuart walk in and he blew me off to go rap with Steuart. He wanted to see how Steuart's new gig with the Eagles was going.
Thanks for this in depth look at Steuart. He is an amazing player and humble person. His finely crafted solo on Rodney Crowell’s Wandering Boy off the 2001 Houston Kid album is a masterpiece.
Thank Zak! Great info, will add to my play list tonight. You Rock Bro!

I first heard Steuart on Rodney's 'Tell Me The Truth' from the seldom-mentioned but excellent 'Keys To The Highway' album. To say I was floored by his playing is an understatement. Hey Zac - I decided to go back to the start of your YT videos so checked out your Spotify playlist featuring Steuart Smith. My only awareness of him was via an Eagles show I saw several years ago. His playing was awesome that night but somehow I never followed up on his prior work. Thoroughly enjoyed the playlist. I have several albums by the artists/bands you featured but none that Steuart played on. I will have to fix that situation as his playing is awesome.
I'm an instant fan, Zac!! I knew about Stewart with the Eagles, but had no idea about much of his other work. That playlist is an addiction, man!!! Looking forward to future episodes! JT Corenflos, maybe????? Thanks! ~Frank

I lived in the same neighborhood with Steuart in No Arlington, VA in the late 90's early 2000s. I think he was working with Shawn at the time. He would walk his dog by my house and we got to be friends. When he was asked to join the Eagles he mentioned that Gibson was providing him with the White double-neck guitar for Hotel California. Just after that, the Eagles came to DC and Steuart told me that he had been "working" on Hotel California and would be showcasing the new guitar at the show. My wife and I went and it was very cool to see him appear on stage with his new guitar. Speaking of guitars. I was in a local Guitar Center and "shopping" around (as guitar players do), and I came across a Godin Acousticaster that had a Fender Neck. I thought, How Cool. The guitar tech there told me it had been owned by Steuart and he had brought it in sell it. Well, of course, I bought it and the next time Steuart walked his dog, I brought it out to show him. He was like, "What are you doing with that!" LOL. It was very fun to know it was true and we had that connection. I have not talked with him lately but did see him on stage at the recent Eagles Hotel California Tour, this past August in DC. (If you know anything tunes he played that guitar on, I'd love to know.) Thanks for your review of Steuart, he is a great guitarist and a really nice guy
I first saw Steuart in DC in the 80's with a band called Switchblade....just the best!

It was more than 40 years ago Steuart played a white strat in a soul-cover band called "Crying Out Loud". Saw him and the band in Annapolis Maryland at Charlie's Eastside Bar on Wednesday nights. Far from headliners, seeing the band and Steuart play "Pucker Up Buttercup" and "Who's Making Love?" was one of my life's memories that will never fade. Wish you had been there too.

Steuart and I grew up about 4 blocks apart in Baltimore. He was in a band in 7th grade (1964?) -- I remember the first time I heard him on stage at a Friday night dance at the St. David's Church. He was playing a Sears Silvertone if I remember correctly. It was a rock cover band. It might have been called something like 2324 Michigan Avenue. He was amazing in 7th grade compared to me still struggling with the 3 chords of Louie Louie (The Kingmans). I joined a soul band in 1968 (The Neuvelles featuring the Emersons), a band that played primarily CYOs, proms, etc. By then Steuart was playing hard rock.. because he could. We never played at the same venues because you can't dance to Led Zepplin. We graduated the same year from rival high schools (City College versus Baltimore Polytechnic Institute). He enrolled at the University of Maryland, but I doubt he finished. When he told me that he was going to give music a shot, I thought to myself, maybe I should try something easier that doesn't require as much talent, like being a scientist or a doctor. That was a good choice. So was Steuart's decision. The way he played was magical to me.
Great job, Zac!

As Felder, Walsh, and Schmitt came aboard, they were billed as full members of the band, although they're actually employees rather than partners. Smith isn't billed as a band member in their promo or spotlighted onstage, and he's nearly as anonymous as the three or four other support players the band uses on live appearances.

Exactly so.Felder had to sue to be recognized as a partner. He won in court, but wasn't included in Henley rebooting the band after Frey died. And Steuart covers Felder's parts to a T. We musicians admire him greatly, but I guess I'm a little disappointed he doesn't get more public recognition!
The variety of music he plays? Totally amazes me, Makes Eric Clapton look like a Boy Scout. My Favo? Listen to the Flamingo/Acoustic solo on Roseanne's song. Way To Make A Broken Heart on her King Records Shop Album? He is heaven-sent. He adjusts to many styles of music. I will find him, once I record my songs, Google search, Harry Broker🌹👀🌹

Many years ago, I got to see Rodney Crowell play at a bar in Boston (the Backstage in Cambridge). I was keen on Albert Lee at the time, and hoped Albert would be on the gig. Instead, some lanky guy with a Strat and a thumbpick walks on stage. I foolishly expected to be disappointed, but instead I was dumbfounded by Steuart for the entire show. I have since seen him with Shawn Colvin, and was equally knocked out. He is supremely tasteful and inventive. Thanks Zac for an enjoyable video. I liked that list of works that he was most proud of and enjoyed chasing some of them down. However, there is a serious omission. Anyone who appreciates Steuart Smith needs to give a listen to kzread.info/dash/bejne/q2iOzqWvhrO1Y7Q.html in which he rocks out super hard with massive creativity and emotion. The next time you speak with him, tell him that a rando on the internet considers Steuart Smith to be not the best judge of Steuart Smith's best work, and that for such a glaring omission, he, and you too, for repeating the error, are Guilty as Sin. btw, the other player on that track is Aussie Mark Punch, also a very fine experienced player: kzread.info/dash/bejne/n5yozMiLk7jYfMY.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/i5mG1bmqp8zXZdY.html Seriously, I'd like to know if that track had them in the studio playing together or whether overlaid tracking juju was employed, cuz the interplay on that track, both the rhythm and soloing, is stunning.
