Interesting video. Watching this one and several others seduced me into buying one of these in gloss cream color and then a 4 HH with maple neck in red. Now, I'm ancient, a retiree on the far side of 70 and my last gig was in March 1979, many moons ago. However, I still find playing a bass rather soothing, though I had a hiatus of about 30 years after my last gig before I started fooling with my basses again. When I quit gigging back in the age of dinosaurs, the MM basses were becoming popular, though they were derided then as being the "toilet seat" bass, due to the shape of the pickguard on the body. Always wanted one but I could not justify the cost and the Sterling line has allowed me to indulge myself after all this time. I can only marvel at the quality of these instruments, the ease of playing, and the sounds I can get. Let me say that I played in an era before slap became really popular so my idiom is merely fingerpicking and the sound I like is old school, far from the excessively trebly sound of contemporary slap. I do marvel at the skill and technique I see with the slap idiom but it's not me, but fiddling with these basses and the amp tones, I find a can get something close to an old school tone approaching the Fender Tele Bass sound, but more defined. These basses are an excellent bang for the buck and I can only wish I had something this good when I started once upon a time. Well, you give a good demo of the sounds of the Sterling and for that, I thank you as you helped to persuade me to get my 2 Sterlings and let me just say that, "they don't make 'em like they used to": they make 'em better now. Well done.

I am considering buying my first bass. The look of the Stingray style attracted me at first. The sound is amazing and seems versatile. Do you think the HH version is preferable over the single humbucker Ray4? Someone in my area is selling a Ray4HH, asking $300.

The SubRay bass is worth buying but you will probably end up changing the electronics/pickup if you are gigging often. They run extremely hot with slight distortion depending on pickup height. I had Sterling replace my electronic harness with an upgraded design. In addition, I added an Ernie Ball bridge mute kit, and buffed out the satin finish to glossy with an expensive car polish, looks & sounds great at a small cost.

About 5 years ago I was looking on my local Craigslist ads and I seen one of these listed for $100. I contacted the guy immediately. He wanted to meet right then. Luckily I wasn't busy and said ok. He acted all weird and rushed. Like he was in a hurry. The bass didn't look new but it was in great shape (no knicks or scratches). I paid and took the bass home. Because the price was low and the guy was strange, I checked out the serial number to make sure it wasn't listed as stolen. All was well. Maybe he was selling it for drugs. I hope not. I still have that bass today and it is awesome!

I had this bass. As much as I loved its design and play-ability, it never sounded good in a full band mix no matter what I did to it. No amount of EQ could fix it. It always got buried in the mix, and if I raised the volume it would drown out everything else like a loud fart. I sold it and got a Jazz Bass and I couldn't have been more satisfied. The tone of the Jazz Bass sits so perfectly with other instruments; I barely have to do anything.

I’m inclined to Sterling because I’m a huge Tim Commerford fan but I’m wondering if a single humbucker and the the thumb rest location is OK for a beginner. In the other hand, I love the idea of the 32 inch Squire Jaguar CV because it has more sound options. Any guidance?

Hey! Thanks for watching! If you love the Tim Commerford vibe, you’re gonna be way more inspired by the Sterling. As a starting point that makes more sense and it’s still a classic sound! Go for a slightly upgraded one if you can like the Ray 24s etc. I’d say this Ray4 isn’t the best representation and has a couple of technical deficiencies in the preamp! T

Hi Tyler (or Hi mate as they say in the UK lol), I just subbed to your channel about a month ago and like your videos. I'm in Florida, USA. I have a question for you about this Music Man: I own a Sterling (by Music Man) Stingray 5 string, model Ray25CA. I noticed yours looks identical to mine (except for color as I have the sunburst and yours is 4 string) but yours is marked as a SUB Ray24. I did a quick Google search and it seems Sterling offers both models, but I wonder what is the real difference? They are both priced fairly close, the Ray24/24 were about $200 higher then the SUB models. I take it that the SUB is more of an entry - level / student model?

  • @TylerSpicer

    @TylerSpicer

    4 жыл бұрын

Haha, we do indeed say mate 😂 Thank you for subscribing and supporting the channel! I haven’t had hands on a Ray25CA, but from what I can garner the 25 is based on the classic range from the full Musicman range (which is my favourite bass that Musicman currently builds!). That means you’re getting a ‘Slab’ body on your 25, so no shaping on the back or front of the body for forearm and belly. By the looks of it the neck will be a little chunkier and you also have the sterling inscription on the bridge (which I think is a nice touch!) I feel the Sub is definitely more of the entry level instruments, and I personally wish Musicman would do the Toluca blue Ray25 as I think it’s a gorgeous combination! Hope that answers the question for you? T

I have the exact same bass, I have used it live to great effect. realy cuts through any level of insanity. I'm unusual (I guess ) as I run 0% trebble and 75-100% Bass at home and 25-50% T and 75-100% B for live, depending on what amp I'm going through . And I put in a thumb rest as I play by the neck most of the time. The only thig I feel it misses is a bit of mid. So I bought a G&L tribute Killoton passive bass, as it has a pickup in more or less the same place , but a warmer more middy tone . Dose anyone own one of these , if so what do you think of it?

I have four Knobs on the Bass here, and input/output jack is LP style. (I have no idea what they do, no Amp to play with, just after the fact D.I.'s) My review, it's a nice Bass but the fingerboards edges are too sharp, A mid range $ Bass that could use some "personalization" to get it to be lower high end $. But that's not what we are looking for, we want a very playable Bass and this could be it, the neck is slim, narrow and straight. It's got some weight too it and the six Screws for the neck don't hurt, it sits well on your lap, and hangs right on a strap, your not reaching for the low frets or the bridge to Pluck. My D.I. tracks sound great, a very Modern (OurLadyPeace) growl to them.

I have a sub ray 4 , left handed model. Unfortunately, all the models with the SUB logo (like the one Tyler shows) came with a factory issue that made the bass sound distorted. Therefore, equalizing it and getting a decent sound was very difficult. As I see it, these basses present a disparity, they are very comfortable to play, but the sound leaves a lot to be desired, they have a dull sound and the slap sounds lifeless, even with new strings. However, by changing the preamp and pickup for a SMB4DS combo (seymour duncan ceramic pickup + preamp of the same brand) the sound of the bass changed 180º. Now the bass sounds incredible, with a lot of definition, power and clarity in its sound, almost like an original stingray. My final verdict is that these basses are a very good platform to make modifications. For a novice or someone who is not very demanding in the sound could be useful this bass as it comes from the factory, but if someone wants to give a more professional use to this instrument, I recommend changing the pickup and preamp. Greetings and peace.

I am aware I’m a year late to this convo, but if your like me and play multiple hours everyday, then your gonna need to buy rechargeable 9V’s because my first rotation lasted about a month.

Am I the only one to whom these SUB Sterling Stingrays sound more like the American ones than the alnico-humbuckered Ray34s?

I personally prefer the alnico sound, but I think you're right, the alnico isn't the same. T

There's sub rays and there's sub, sub rays. The sub rays made in California are much better than sub rays made elsewhere as the ones made in California are basically real stingrays that just didn't make the cut. You can distinguish between good and lesser ones by the markings on the back of the head stock (made in California ) and the logo on the bridge

Had two of these, play great, but the electrics have caught fire 🔥 on both. I’d avoid. Buy a squire jazz bass.

Neither, it would be considered an MM for that traditional Musicman pickup placement, the big double coil humbucker in the bridge! T

Mine is my favorite bass I've ever had. It KILLS my Fenders and keeps up with my Ibanez SR 300. You probably have a bad battery in the back, plus yours is a pawn shop special. (I saw that tag) also, the newer ones don't have that big SUB 4 logo on the head. Mine is mint green, made in 2019. The bridge has "Sterling" engraved into it. No offense, but yours sounds bad and is prolly a 200$ bass...(maybe cheaper at the pawn shop u got it at, dead battery and all....) the stingray will always be Leo Fender's best bass. Jazz bass is 2nd. Anyone saying different are purists or just want to argue. (My Jaguar sounds better than any Jazz bass. And p basses are a ripoff unless you get one for under 100$)

I’m glad you dig yours! This wasn’t mine as you can see, it’s stock from the Guitar Centre Langley here just outside London - they use those tags on all stock new or old. I love the 2 band rays personally and I’d love to try the 5 string model based on the classic! T

Ceramic pickup is actually too hot. I rewired in parallel as it is in series and the preamp is now serviceable as it wants a lower resistance. I will be putting an Alnico pickup in my ray 4 soon
