I find that I like the tones from my cheap SUB series Ray 4 a LOT more than my Ray 34. Supposedly the 34 is supposed to be dead on with the real deal EBMM, but I feel it lacks a lot of punch and attack. Sounds very neutral and dead like those entry level Ibanez starter pack basses.

The Rays34 have a closer sound to the original MM to my ears. The other ones sounds more medium. But it's still good sounding bass too. Just different. Thank you for this great comparison.

That's because the 24ca/25ca is wired in series. Once you rewire the pickups to parallel you'll hear more top sizzle

Dzięki za porównanie! Mówiąc szczerze, podoba mi się tylko jeden: Ray34. Reszta brzmi trochę...meh. Może Ray24 by podołał, jakby przystawkę połączyć równolegle i wywalić preamp, bo o ile pamiętam, to ten sam preamp który siedzi w Rayu4. Trochę szkoda z tymi Sterlingami, bo o ile łatwo dostać niedrogiego Jazza bardzo brzmieniowo zbliżonego do Fenderów, tak w przypadku Sterlingów brzmieniowo to są lata świetlne (oprócz 34, który brzmi genialnie). Trochę osłuchiwałem tych basów na YT i ze względu na mega wysokie ceny 34 zdecydowałem się ostatecznie na...Ibaneza ATK. Dużo fajniejszy niż tańsze Sterlingi. No i powodzenia z Rayem 34, będziesz miał dużo frajdy z tego basiora :D

No dobra.... kurde... pastelowo zielony Ray 5 przymula, żółty jaśniejszy w brzmieniu lepszy choć d*** nie urywa, brokatowy daje czadu, HH brzmi jak przez ścianę. Może jednak przeproszę się z sterlingiem o ile trafię na 5 strunowca brzmiącego jak ten brokatowy. P.S. W zielonym 5 strunowcu tak mocno za strunę się zapierasz czy jest krzywo gryf wkręcony ?

Consìdering that Ray4 and Ray24 have exactly the same onboard preamp, the sound difference (in particular the Ray24 deeper sound) is made by a better ceramic pickup

It’s hard to judge when some of them have way too much fret buzz

The fret buzz is intentional to get the midrange growl.

Thanks for the video! I have a question concerning the Ray4. I know it has an active preamp but passive pickups (or so I've read), but is it possible with this one to play without batteries aswell? And if so, does the sound have the quality of a passive bass (apart from the pact that the preamp isn't used in that case)?

It does NOT make any sense that a Stingray can play in passive mode / no battery for one simple reason: the original iconic Stingray sound is a combination of the humbucker pickup placed in that exact position plus his characteristic preamp (2 eq in origin)...I mean, it is not only an active bass, it was born active

I play my ray4 at home without battery, you just have to turn the amp volume up much more

Ray24 sounds like normal spring and the Ray34 sounds more springy (like flea's sound) Ray34 HH sounds horrible...

The SUB & 24 sound pretty much the same, the 34 is brighter in the overall tone & the HH kind of reminds me of a Ricky bass, hints of Chris Squier there

Wow, so much difference! I think only the Ray24 and the Ray34 sound like a real StingRay. The Ray4 (Ray5 in your case, right?) has very little definition in comparison, weak bass and mids and no zing. If the hardware/playability is decent, it's a nice starter bass and could be a good mod platform, but it screams for a pickup/EQ upgrade. The Ray34 HH is just a different beast, can do the classic sound and a lot more. If you like the additional sounds and find use for them, that's something everybody has to answer for themselves. I don't like the particular sound you demoed, but there should be more. It's a pity they went away from the H/S configuration, I found that a lot more useful.

The ray 4/5 is an absolutely great mod platform. Decent weight, and a very playable neck. I upgraded my ray 4 with an emg mmcs-x pup and the 3 knob layout bqc preamp. It's night and day. I despised the low end of the 4. With the upgrade it sounds like absolutely amazing.

@@jacobdomangue7088 Sounds like an awesome upgrade! I love what Lobster has done with his Project Code Red bass: Ray4 HH with two EMG MMTW, with coil split, 2-band EQ and tone blend. I didn't consider EMG for a long time, but this thing sounded just amazing!

@@jacobdomangue7088Oh, and by the way, I'm also considering to get a Ray5 for modding: I just met a guy who builds sliding pickups, and this bass would be a perfect match because they slide on the pickguard, and I can't think of another bass with a pickguard that goes from the neck all the way to the bridge.

@VeitLehmann the sliding pickup bit is weird to me, and unnecessary. To each their own. But you don't get the stingray sound without it being in it's bridge position. I'd rather the hh model, and do the emg upgrade

I like the ray 24 right out of the box it weights less than the ray 34 and has a better humbucker and bridge than the ray 4 and it can be rewired from series to parallel the ray 4 can't

Could be awesome basses. They sound great! Too bad those roasted maple necks are horrible. I gave up on ever buying a Ray34 HH last year. Every single bass I played was terrible.

Why the RAY35HH sounds so muddy no high end there

WTF have you done with the HH? I never heard one sound so bad. On what position is the switch? Sounded like only neck pickup and full treble. With suchdifferent setups, worthless comparison, wasted time.
