Steppenwolf "It's Never Too Late" (w/interview)
Steppenwolf mimes to "It's Never Too Late" in 1969. During the interview afterwards it's revealed that Nick St. Nicholas' fave group is The Fugs! I'm sure Ed knew exactly who he was talking about ;-)
Michael Monarch - gtr
Jerry Edmonton - drms
John Kay - vox
Nick St Nicholas - bs
Goldy McJohn - orgn

My dad loves steppenwolf, he is a Vietnam veteran and the most badass man I've ever known. This song has been with me my entire life. One of my top favorites.
This is an absolute classic. If Lennon had written this we'd never of heard the end of it... oh and I'm here because I've been listening to Steppenwolf for forty years! 😂

Not So Fun Fact: Rushton Moreve, original bassist for Steppenwolf, who's seen in this clip (and in the thumbnail), would eventually be the first member of the band to lose his life; in Rushton's case in a car accident.

During the interview, did Goldy say Jimmy Smits?! How 🤔 ❓️ could've Goldy possibly known who he was back then? But seriously, it seems more likely that he said Jimmy Smith, whom I can't say that I've heard of.
I listened to this on cassette in my treehouse.
After I got out of the Marine Corps, I use to listen to this song before I graduated college and it just had this stinging truth to it. I thought I was on top of the world being a college graduate, the first in my family, but had no idea what I was going to do next. Currently, I am a teacher! There is a place for everyone in this world, remember that when you don't know what to do!

From Fountain Ave. to the biggest stage in the world. You made it boys. Congratulations!!
The "Fugs," Ed. F-U-G-S. Sullivan was, of course, totally un-hip. Yet, he sensed the pulse of the times, and knew what he needed to do to maximize his audience and, of course, keep those advertising dollars coming in. He is to be credited with acknowledging and for the most part respecting America's youth culture, come what may.
Most unfortunate that the "Hall" in Cleveland has yet to recognize Steppenwolf. Commercial success, critical acclaim, cultural prominence and political consciousness personified through exceptional songwriting and musicianship, while influencing and inspiring a generation of songwriters and musicians. Their attributes and accolades exceed the criteria beyond what the Hall demands of its members for induction. Of the original Steppenwolf, only John Kay remains. RIP John Raymond "Goldy McJohn" Goadsby, Jerry Edmonton and Rushton Moreve.

jeffrey mcglone ~ That's inaccurate. Steppenwolf weren't really a biker band. They didn't look like bikers either. They did maybe three songs of their entire catalog related to biker culture... and this wasn't one of them.
One of their greatest. They had so many hits.
Got to LOVE the B3 Hammond
Such an.amazing tune
One of my albums and *8 tracks* back in the day. Just as fresh today as then. Good stuff.
Ed Sullivan was a Hoot. Just like my beloved dad, you could tell rock wasn't Sullivan's bag. "And now those longhaired. Rock N Rollers." "COMBO". "Jimmy Hendrick?" Plus this live version is one of my fave Steepenwolf tunes. Liked the slight echo sound.
Ed Sullivan could butte heads with people as various books have stated but he also could be very kind and did not have aversion towards rocknroll era like Dean Martin , Mitch Miller and Steve Allen. I think Allen changed over the years. Steppenwolf had a lot of great songs . They were even nominted for RocknRoll Hall Of Fame one year but didn't make although they got 100 k fan votes including mine Grandmaster Flash in there and Dusty Springfield but no Steppenwolf.

Ed Sullivan knew "good" no matter what the genre. He really had Diana Ross and the Supremes on a lot, and The Animals. And a lot of Opera singers. He really did appreciate the arts, in all it's forms. I wish he had had The Young Rascals on more though. There's just not enough recordings of those guys.

I first heard this band on an LP vinyl record that friend brought to listen to still love them. That was back around 1970. That was long time ago. their bass players were a trip, the first one Rushton Moreve was let go after his girlfriend convinced him California was going to have a major earthquake and disappear, this one Nick St Nicholas is pretty trippy as well and the outfits and makeup didn't fit the black leather image Kay was going for, so one night he went on stage wearing a jock strap and bunny ears and he was let go too

Nick did wear a jock strap and bunny ears at the beginning of '69 (Fillmore East, March '69), but he was in the band for a year after that. In fact, that incident had already occurred by the time they were on Ed Sullivan. In JK's book it's depicted as Nick being fired immediately after the bunny ears gig, but John got that wrong.

perhaps he remembers it as the catalyst but they couldn't drop him mid tour?? lots of screwed up stuff with that band like the guys later losing their rights to royalties so they could use the name, never making the payments, what's weird is I saw Steppenwolf at the New Haven Coliseum @78 and it was a reunion, Kay, Jerry, Goldie were all there, not sure on bass player and guitar but pretty sure it as St Nicholas and Henry, remember PLR promoting it as get down here because Steppenwolf has reunited, can find no history of that show happening but I was there, I think Streetwalkers opened. it's possible it was 76-77 but I can't find the concert date list for the venue that includes it

Are you sure about that? 1978 was the time when the "bogus" groups calling themselves Steppenwolf were touring, but John and Jerry had nothing to do with them which is what led John to go back out on the road in 1980 billing himself as "John Kay & Steppenwolf". Nick, Goldy, Kent and even Rushton Moreve were in the bogus bands, but not John or Jerry.

Their always right there in the back of my mind. Always.
