@@totallyunmemorable These days it has become a joke but it was formed to pay tribute to artists that have made a big impact on Rock so guys like Scotty moore from Elvis P, Band , Link Wray, Page , Tony Iommi , Mike Bloomfield , Jimi , & the many greats that made the hall what it was meant to no longer exists & has been altered to fit folks that just have no place there hence the reason it's a joke as now you need little to no talent to be amongst guys like Jimi . Way to many artists that have carved there way to have the right to be in are not & for Rock N Roll that does suck. John Kay & all the members that made Steppenwolf such a killer & influential band do belong in the hall along with the greats that made it once have merit. 🎸🎶 Iv'e played guitar since the late 60s as an amature but to be honered in a place that has Hendrix & all the greats that made Rock great i would not turn that down just because of some idiots that don't have a clue what the hall was really meant for. John Kay & all the guys that made Steppenwolf so good belong where the real great real & the hell with the fools in there that have no place being there. Yea sadly it has become a joke but it's not the real musicians fault .

It was once the rrhof. Now it is the rap and country hall of Fame. A political organization trying to be "inclusive".

I was 16 and borrowed my mothers vw and with my sister and some of her friends drove downtown to the Spectrum in Philadelphia. I was loaned the car with the promise I would be home by midnight, living in Merion Station. Well Steppenwolf was supposed to start at 8pm but they didn’t start until 11 pm . Somehow my sister , me and her girlfriends were asked if we wanted to sit up on stage ? I sat basically right next to the organ . The show lasted a couple of hours . Best show I ever went to. Lost my glasses on the way back to the car but somehow managed to get us all home safely. Didn’t have use of the car for a month after that night but it was well worth it. The year I believe was 69. First concert ever was Steppenwolf.. at the old Electric Factory..22nd &Arch in Philly.. I thought that was in 69…?🤔 I was in HS.. kinda foggy on the date.. lol

I’m just a little younger than you but saw many good shows at the Spectrum in Philly. The lights went down and the pot came out and inside that space it was unofficially legal for the length of the concert . Never saw Steppenwolf but just watch a you tube documentary on the group great back story to Germany World War Two.

If it wasn’t Belmont Plateau and that amazing large field or the Spectrum, those were my two go twos…. Along with flying kites in Valley Forge.

Real ! Hip and cool adventure. I was 16 then also and played bass in a ! R /. R. Band. Great times. Saw allot of the big bands when they were young and new in and around the Detroit area. There were 7 ! Diff clubs and arenas they played at. My favorite band ! Mountain featuring ! Leslie West. Saw him early 70;;s at the Masonic Temple in Det mich twice. Gibson jr les Paul and stacks of sunn amps and speaker cabinets.

Luv that John K saved the organ solo by putting his vocal mic in there. A pro that knew how to work around incompetent sound dudes.

I don't think it was incompetent sound dudes. I think John just wanted to highlight the solo. The singer of a band I was in would do the same thing, but he would shove the mike into the kick drum for a few seconds in the middle of a song, to really highlight the beat, then go back to singing through it. He only did it when he was in the mood. It was never planned. I wouldn't be surprised if Kay is doing the same thing.

I saw them in Wildwood N.J. in 1971 and he did the same thing, sort of. When they were prepping for the song "For Ladies Only" and Goldy moved to the piano he said, "The piano mic isn't working". John's response was, "Just bang on them harder". Then when the piano solo started he put his vocal mic on it's stand and stuck it down inside the piano. Worked the same way.

Amps were not generally miked in this era. Hence the big stack amps. A Leslie speaker only played so loud. It obviously couldn't compete with the Marshall and Ampeg stacks. Using 2 of them would sound weird because the rotating speakers would not have stayed in sync with each other. I wouldn't call this a failure of the sound guy, it's just the state of technology of the era.

I remenber hearing magic carpet ride when I was 16 year's old. I'm now 70. I still love the song!

My First album Steppenwolf Live. My dad said pick out another one for Christmas so I pick out The Carpenters first album…yeah!…opposite ends of the spectrum but two great albums nonetheless.

I grew up diggin' on Steppenwolf. Jerry Edmonton was a huge influence on me as a young drummer. He definately never got the love he deserved!

You're the first I've ever heard say that. And I don't know why that is. I've been a musician for half a century. I've long thought JE was totally, and unjustly, underappreciated. I can't think of a single conversation where his name came up amongst my musician friends. Totally screwy, he comes up with some truly clever parts. @@keithfinsley330

Madonna is nothing more than a glorified studio creation. She attempted to sing unplugged and sounds terrible with absolutely no range. Madonna spent alot of time on her knees to get where she is at.

i saw steppenwolf at "new york pop festival" at randall's island N.Y.C. 07/17/70. w/ John Sebastian, Grand Funk Railroad, Steppenwolf, and Jethro Tull. awesome band!!!

Music Factory Greenville NC 17 and rode to show with my older brother. Even got dosed with some window pane that was going around on the front row!

What a joy to see Steppenwolf live. Magnificent Canadian group. I think the first Hard Rock album I heard when I was 15, their album "The Second" is a true rock classic of all time with tremendous pieces like "faster than the speed of life", Don't Step on the grass Sam", 28 (magnificent piano on this one), the incredible "Magic Carpet Ride" and the last 4 pieces of this album since "Disappointment number". And to finish this great band Steppenwolf, "Born to be wild" I think is the first where they mention the term "Heavy Metal"

Not a bad analogy, lol. I'd known about this footage for 15 years, it was a Steppenwolf holy grail for me. And I tried every which way to hunt it down, wholly unsuccessfully. Finally stumbled upon someone who had it and was able to acquire it after 15 years of searching. Rare archeological find indeed! ;-)

I just love this! one of the greatest bands in the world a big shout out to Steppenwolf!

Great to see them live in their prime actually playing and not syncing to a track. These guys are the definition of hard rock.

I saw them while they were on this tour, Salem, Oregon, May of 1969. Three Dog Night opened for them. One of the best. TDN put on a great show.

This was the first song I bought on a 45 single and I'll always consider it the no.1 biker anthem. Long live John Kay and Steppenwolf 🎸

This confirms it. When I was in a rock band in the 70's , when playing live with the Leslie Speakers, they could never compete with the Marshals or the. Fender amps as far as being heard.

I was introduced to Steppenwolf in the year ,1974 when I was only 16 years of age. It brought back alot of memories. Thanks for sharing

Latched on to Magic Carpet Ride when watching an episode of Ken Burns' The Vietnam War. Scanned the end credits to find out who it was. That series is excellent, the waste, lies and fuck-ups. Unbelievable. Some things never change. I burst into tears during the final episode when they showed the memorial wall 🇬🇧

Saw them at the farm aids 1986 1987 Austin TX

Saw them in Bangor, Maine in 69. First concert for me. Loved them! Fire Dept wouldn't let them turn down the lights so they swore they would never come back...

The sounds of my youth! So lucky to grow up then.

Saw John Kay in the 80s. New band, and they rocked the joint down! There were about 40 Hells Angels there. No trouble, but after they were done with their beer pitchers, they stomped them to bits. About 800 in that club.

Wow, this is what you call raw.

This is classic live footage of Steppenwolf! Wow! When this monster hit just came out on the soundtrack for the Classic film Ea❤syrider! They were lean and mean back then. Good to see this as it’s so rare. ❤Killer tune! My favorite line is I never is I never want to die! I couldn’t agree more! But sadly it’s unavoidable as the body ages, it breaks down slowly and then it crashes like a car. Too bad one can’t just replace the worn out parts. Instead it expires and there nothing one can do. 😢😮

Very rare film clip . The band is a little sloppier than on the famous single , but John Kay is singing well . They also performed at Randall's Island with Hendrix and Leslie West's Mountain and many others . Amazing times , far too little of it filmed . Nice to see this , for sure .

Yes, I only just read your comment on another vid of mine from this concert which you wrote 7 months ago, saying that if I had any more, then to please post them as no one is getting any younger. Very good argument and it convinced me to get off my butt and load these tunes. One more to go, over the next few nights if I can find the time 🙂

I was on a farm crew in Northern California. We were driving the PCH. Sraring at the Ocean rolling by. This song came on the radio, on coast to coast. Very surreal, we all felt it.

Finally saw steppenwolfe several years ago. So many classic rock numbers, but to hear John Kay publicly damning pushers was something I waited about 30 years for, it left me speechless, except to sing along!

My family was heading to the gulf coast for the summer vacation. We headed down the street and my brother and yelled out "turn on the radio! And Born to Be Wild came on. Some very minor sense of justice for having to live in "tredneckville as a teenager. Later, in the trip same thing except Journey to the Center of the Mind. We are getting there: a year or two more thdn graduation!!!

Goldie’s keyboard sound & his unique style is what made me want to learn organ. That & the keys in Santana, Deep Purple, & Uriah Heep… that swirling Hammond B3 with Leslie speakers. And Gregg Allman of course.

Well, it was written by a war refugee. John Kay was way more connected to the realities of the world than most of his music peers were. You should read his book.

Steppenwolf was my first concert in 1970 opening band was The Bubble Puppy.

No way I saw that same concert in El Paso Bubble Puppy I think were from Austin the crowd went wild when they played Hot Smoke and sassafras it was a great show.

I forgot....I saw them in concert in Charleston back in the mid 1970's.....lucky me.

Cool video. It's great to see the actual performance and not just hear the audio. Many bands from this period had audio recordings of their live shows but sadly did not have the video (or film) of the live performances preserved (or even made).

They changed the nature of Rock.

There are different slices of the 60s music scene, Steppenwolf and The Guess Who represents one of those slices. Strangely, this slice has gone MIA last 15 or so years from classic FM radio or KZread. Going to have to track down a few albums for the collection

Very odd sounds Kay was playing on his slide guitar during the instrumental part of "Magic Carpet Ride", it wasn't until the end of the song that he played what we are more familiar with. And I noticed those big congo drums next to Jerry, I wonder what songs he used them on, I would think "Rock me" but I don't know what else? And Jerry played his ride cymbal the whole time during "MCR", don't think he used his hi hats once. Thanks again, this is really great!!
