Stephon Marbury: The MISUNDERSTOOD Career of a GLOBAL BASKETBALL SENSATION | FPP

Спорт

He was one of the greatest point guards to come out of New York City; a star at Lincoln High School Stephon Marbury had it all. He could dribble, slash, finish and shoot as all in all, he could fill it up in a hurry but what set him apart was that he could score like that, while possessing the court vision and passing ability of a seasoned veteran. But he definitely wasn’t boring, as he could do all of this with a flashiness that entertained, an unwavering confidence and a love of the big moment, which made him so appealing. He starred for a season at Georgia Tech before becoming a top 5 pick in the legendary 1996 NBA draft. His first few seasons would see him team up with Kevin Garnett in Minnesota, while also putting the AND1 brand on the map as their first major signing. While the reasoning is up for debate, he would choose to move on from Minnesota after a few years and go on to put some great seasons with New Jersey, Phoenix and New York. He had a bit of success in Phoenix alongside Shawn Marion and Amare Stoudemire and also willed a New York Knicks team to the playoffs in his first season there. But overall, his career tends to get defined by underachievement, as he was never able to be that franchise player that he wanted to be. But he also played for bad teams, and while some might say empty stats, he was putting up historic numbers on par with Oscar Robertson until the final years of his NBA career when his new reputation became that of a diva and locker room cancer as he was in feud after feud with his coaches before forcing his way out of New York into an uneventful end of his career in Boston. He would become a legend in the CBA with the Beijing Ducks in a nearly decade long carer after his NBA days, but it seems get forgotten just how good Stephon MArbury really was. He may not have been the most efficient, but in his prime he was a perennial 20+ point per game scorer, while routinely being at the top of the league for assists per game and there were very few who producing like he was during his time, yet he seldom gets brought up. But Starbury does and always will deserve his shine, let’s jog your memory…

Stephon Marbury was one of a kind type of player who was the best player to come out of Coney Island, New York. He was a fan favorite all through his NBA career. He didn’t like being on the Timberwolves because he complained that it was too cold over there. At least, he went back to New York where he plays for his hometown Knicks. He wanted to be closer to his family and friends. Once his NBA career was over, he did very well in China by becoming the player that he was destined to be and win championships. Today, he is still living in China by being a head coach for the Beijing Royal Fighters basketball team.

I had a lot of respect for Marbury because he never backed down from being who he was and that he knew more often than not he was the best player on his team. Bad GM's, bad coaches, and ego driven teamates who were jealous of him really didnt allow him to enjoy sustained team success. I feel like if he had been born into an earlier or even current era he would have won a lot more games and had better teams to play with.

Well done brother! You didn't miss a single detail including his And-1 deal. I'm from NY and grew up following Steph since his Lincoln days and enjoyed his Knicks run until the end. I ran into him in downtown New York and he seemed kind of ignorant. I could see why some of his coaches had a hard time with him but it did look like he changed (and grew) during his time in China. I give Steph a lot of credit for going oversees and adjusting to the lifestyle. It turned out to be a smart move for him in the end.

Marbury was super talented, and probably gets more hate than he deserved. But he didn’t elevate his teams success for all that individual talent. His failings at that, are a huge part of why Nash won two MVPs. Phoenix, 2004, Marbury, Amare, Marion, Joe Johnson, the whole crew. Granted, Marbury got traded halfway through the season to New York, but in that half season they only won a third of their games. Next year, Nash comes in, little roster change, same coach, they win 62 games. I’m glad Stephon found his success in China, and after listening to his melo pod, it sounds like he’s in a good place.

Steph could've been better than AI because he was a better shooter and passer. But Steph got too greedy and acquired an "entitlement" mentality (rather than a warrior mentality) after leaving Minnesota

Sorry, you alway7s take about the players from New York City and New York State had some other PLAYERS with star power. The Williams Brothers ( gus-the Magician & Ray_ New York Knicks), Earl Tatum ( Lakers via Marquette) and I could go on so yes, the city had great players but let's not forget Westchester and other counties of New York State.

Great player but poor leader! This is where accountability comes into play. Every team that marbury aka starbury was a starter, for he couldn't get them into playoff, originally the team was knocked out in the first round! Second, his turnover was crazy every year he was top 3! Three, he couldn't get along with any coach during his tenure while he was in NBA! like i said before, great player, but poor leader!
