He influenced so many different bands and so many genres and even though he was honored by the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame twice in one night (the only one) it is not enough. He deserves a third induction for his solo career (to include Manassas). Most people don’t realize that he paid for that band. All the band members salaries, traveling expenses, living expenses and they all lived together in Stills homes in England and Colorado. Chris Hillman finally had to sit him down and say, you are paying us too much. He lost his shirt on Manassas. He had to sell his home in England, which broke his heart. And his dream band disbanded because he could not afford it anymore. Atlantic records did not support that band and in fact provided no promotion of it. They wanted him back in CSNY. People always wonder what happened to him and why his music changed so much. He was never the same after Manassas disbanded. You never know what exactly happened but you can guess. He was still a major talent and had some great success coming, CSN 77 album, Southern Cross, etc. and then CSNY tours in 2000,2002 and 2006 and then in 2012 CSN had a career renaissance with a DVD and many sold out tours. Also the emergence of a blues band, The Rides. Any way you measure his career output it is immense and impressive. He is my all time favorite artist and I believe if he had been supported by Atlantic he would have achieved even more and be at the top of all the major talents of that era. He had it all!

All of the folks discussed in the video above helped make some memorable music by letting bluegrass, country, western and in the case of Manassas, latin & blues, into their outlook. The Byrds played with this as well. Not japing like the Stones did, but actually letting a rock outlook get changed by country, western, bluegrass.

The first Manassas double album is the most underrated double album of all time, and is one of the most underrated albums from the '70's, period. The opening of the record with "Song Of Love" seamlessly joining into the following songs is like the Abbey Road medley; so much great music just weaving in and out of the speakers. I love this album. At least once a year I get it out and play it through a few times...an incredible achievement by all involved.

Stills and the band were on fire on this album. The first side is easily one of the best sides of an album from that entire era. Flawless, funky, loose and absolutely on the money from the first note. You can hear Stills really letting loose, his singing and his playing at their peak. Stunning music.

@@robertplummer1043 Love that track! Man, he was on a serious roll from like the last year of Springfield, into '69 and CSN and then the solo record run he had until '73 or so. I read an interview with Mitch Mitchell where he talked about Hendrix thinking of people to play with right before the Band of Gypsy's era and he said he always came back to Stills as like co-lead guitar and Steve Winwood on B3. Would've been heavy!

@@whatspadethinks this video fails to mention that 3 talented Burritos came over to Manassas. Byron Berline was a great veteran bluegrass violin player logging time with Bill Monroe and Dillard and Clark. If you want to know how good this guy was "Fallen Eagle" is what I recommend off their first lp. Also, while you may not remember Joe Lala, you may recall a band he cofounded, "Blues Image" and their hit, Ride Captain Ride

Saw them at Selland Arena Fresno the same year. They played Rock and Roll Girl and did 4 and 20 and a few other CSN along with his solo stuff. I was praying they'd do Go Back Home and Eric Clapton would guest on it. But nada. They did play their entire first lp start to finish. I know I had it memorized by then. The thing that cracked me up the most is out of the blue, Stills turns to us and says, "I'm the MAN in MAN-assA/Es.😂😂.....😣

I saw Manassas play just after they released their double lp. Not only did they play for almost 3 hrs. and did a lot of Springfield and CSN tunes plus his solo stuff but they started out playing their entire 2-lp record from start to finish. It was a great show. But something that Stephen said on stage really told me something about his personality and sense of humor. When he was performing he suddenly said, "I'm the MAN in MANassas. So that leaves the rest of the band as the ASSES I thought. Kinda' told me a little about him more than his music ever did. But it still was a great show and admittedly he was THE man in that band.

I agree with both you two below....the Manassas recordings are phenomenal. Lucky for me....Manassas is right down the road a piece. Stephen being a history buff of the Civil War and visiting the Historical sites and battlefields. The trail station where the picture was taken is a historical landmark. You did a superb job doing this video all correct....all of them are and those not here just superb people especially off stage. Kudos to you for this one!

Stills' first solo album and Manassas #1 were two of the best records of the early '70s. I think they're both underrated, especially Manassas #1. It's clearly the best from the band, the most spontaneous and well played. "Change Partners" is really the longest lasting hit from the first album. Stills flies under the radar when guitar players are rated, but he was one of the best in that era, not to mention his terrific voice and song writing talent. Quite a package, really. And he is still out there, too. Check out the album he did with Kenny Wayne Shepherd a couple of years ago. Excellent.

that first Manassas album captured such a moment in time in the early 70's...it followed on from the hippies 'back to the land' momentum when it seemed as if all the uber-hippies had 'ranches' in rural America and everybody else had a cabin somewhere: drugs, dogs, cabins and "old-ladies". "Money-folk" ruled the airwaves...These guys were 'tight'

When anyone EVER asks me about my favorite music ( “album”) of all time, there is zero thought….and The first Manassas blurts out of my mouth. To me it is an actual symphony…and I mean that it is a SYMPHONY…right up there with what came from all the great composers ever. All the band members were masters of their instruments and they played basically 3 hours.

Steven Stills is the real deal
On the first Manassas tour Mr. Stills fronted the entire expense-from renting the concert halls-paying the band and all else-not to mention the travel. Everything.
Easily one of the most diversified albums ever. Each side is pure gold. Stills was one of the greatest musical geniuses of the rock and roll era. Vastly underrated.
I love pretty much everything Stephen Stills has ever done, but that first Manassas album is on a whole other level. The songwriting, the singing, the musicianship is just indescribably good. Easily in my top ten all time. Side 1, The Raven, is probably my favorite.

Next level beauty
The first Manassas album was incredible. Nothing compares with the music, layout and flow of this double album. Great musicians combined with a great song writer and musician produced a one of a kind sound. They played their shows in the same way the album was laid out. Special band and a special album.
Manassas is the quintessential American rock band.
if I could listen to one album for the rest of my life it would be the first Manassas album

Fantastic album man!!
The first Manasas work was indeed a masterpiece. The 2nd and last release was damn good!
"Crosby, Stills and Nash...and sometimes Young" 😁
I saw Manassas in concert at the Hollywood Bowl back in 1972. Someone in the audience yelled out "Bluebird" (Buffalo Springfield song). Stephen Stills replied "Bluebird done flew the coop"

I am so blessed to have seen this band live. Selland Arena July 1973. What a memorable night.
STILLS is a genius.....he was fully musically developed in his teenage years.....voice, songwriting and guitar skills!
Crazy how underrated Manassas was and still is. I'm 45 and only stumbled upon them 5 years ago. Never heard anyone ever bring them up ever which is crazy considering how good that first album is. The live studio show that's on youtube is so great. Can't imagine how good it was to see them live.

That was a great video. I love the Manassas record, I've listened to it for 20 years and returned to it so many times.
The original Manassas album remains one of my favourites of all time ......
Saw Manassas at Carnegie Hall the year of the band's debut. Brilliant bunch of musicians.
LOVE the first Manassas album. A masterpiece.
Stills' debut solo LP and the 1st Manassas double LP are among two of the best releases from Rock's renaissance era.
That first Manassas LP is a perennial killer.
Manassas is just second to none
One of the best albums ever recorded! Every song is so good! A fantastic medley, timeless music!
Stills, one of the best voices ever. Only saw him live once in 79 after his return from the Caribbean. He had a few Reggae based tunes he had written awesome concert, ran over time wise. Kept running back to the speaker stacks comming back sniffling with the ocassional Oh Yea especially for the two encores.
So begins the task… is worth a listen.
Stephen Stills is such an underrated music producer. He put together three groups.
Great to see him looking so well. That first Manassas album is absolutely golden from start to finish, possibly the best thing Stills produced. Pure magic. I would have loved to have seen this band live.

And you wouldn't have been disappointed. I saw them live at Winterland in San Francisco, and Berkeley, CA. They were a powerhouse band live.
Awesome informative vid on Stills history. As big fan of CSN and Stills since early 70s, still quite a bit I didnt know until now.
Excellent.

Fantastic Record the first Manassas album very eclectic and great songs, and great Musicians, from an era when the Music Mattered and was paramount among real recording artists, Just wish we could go back to these great creative days, it was the golden age of Music 🌞⭐️👍🏻❤️
best album ever
All of the bands mentioned above were among my most favorite and they inspired me to embrace all types of music. I am forever grateful to all of them for their influence.
I love Manassas my album were stolen out of my house that was one of the albuum 1972 plus Burrito album 👍Steven Stills👍
That first Manassas LP is one of the finest albums of the era. And I only got into it two years ago.
My favorite album
This is a really good segment.
I was "on the rail" for a Mannassas show in Ann Arbor. They were different than anyone else at the time. It was a great show.
Glad I saw him on one of his solo tours
Jesus, this is absolutely gold!
Love the album music and cover - the feel of the music is that of that scene in the snow by the split rail fence ..... just right! jj
Truly one of the greats..
The first time I saw Stills in concert was Manassas in Bloomington, Indiana in 1972. They opened with Rock and Roll Woman, Stills using the white Gretch. I was hooked. Now, almost 50 years later I listen to something he is a part of almost everyday.
that first Manassas album captured such a moment in time in the early 70's...it followed on from the hippies 'back to the land' momentum when it seemed as if all the uber-hippies had 'ranches' in rural America and everybody else had a cabin somewhere: drugs, dogs, cabins and "old-ladies". "Money-folk" ruled the airwaves...These guys were 'tight'
I enjoyed seeing Stephen’s memorabilia at the Colorado Music HOF. I listened to his song Colorado constantly when I first moved here and I could really understand why so many musicians lived here and recorded such a trove of amazing music here. 🏔
When anyone EVER asks me about my favorite music ( “album”) of all time, there is zero thought….and The first Manassas blurts out of my mouth. To me it is an actual symphony…and I mean that it is a SYMPHONY…right up there with what came from all the great composers ever. But Manassas is a notch above….because the composer is also The Performer. Stephen created a masterpiece.
Stills best ever
Saw Manassas in Paris in ‘74 ! And CSN in 2010 ! Truth is, cocaine destroyed them all
It's like looking at his dad. 😊
I owned that on cassette.

Me too. My first itteration was tape, then vinyl then cd. I have a remastered Rhino 180 gram vinyl remastered by Bernie Grumman. Excellent sound on a nice system. It comes out at least once a year in my rotation.
Saw Stephen Stills & Manassas in concert in the summer of 1972 at Swing Auditorium in So. Cal. Too bad the band only lasted for a couple of years. Had some great music.
I highly recommend the Colorado Music Hall of Fame, they’ve got a lot of Stills memorabilia from his time here.
I remember watching hungover and it was amazing to hear about this underrated genius with the soothing music of Manassas
Had it on vinyl and now on cd........great album !
Manassas was a great band. I loved the double album and still do, playing it frequently. Saw the band live at The Rainbow in London with my pal Adrian (1972?) and the whole thing was brilliant. All the band members were masters of their instruments and they played basically 3 hours. Stephen Stills is a great musician, saw him again in 2017 or so in Manchester UK as part of CSN, they were really good but it was Stills, guitar playing that stood out above everything else.
This was when music was music! The two Manassas records are my all-time favorite albums.
Saw Manassas at the Hollywood Bowl in 72.....awesome!

Lots of great music mentioned in less than eight minutes. What a musical time it was !
Il primo disco di stills ed il primo dei manassas sono parte integrante della mia gioventù...gli ascoltavo diciottenne quando i miei coetanei ascoltavano Jovanotti...stills è un grande genio del novecento.
One of my all time favorite albums.
Just stumbled across your channel, I wasn’t even searching for Stills at the time. What a great video! “All the bands in Nashville now, sound like Manassas did *then*” haha great quote and so true.
I saw Manassas in Berkeley the year that first album icame out and what a show! Wonderful!
I have a very close nephew that lives near Boulder Colorado and by the way thank you for wishing me happy 40th birthday in 1994.
I bought Chris Hillman’s first solo .
Stills... Un fenomeno!!!!.... Historico!!!..... Brutal!!!.... Oooh yeeeaaah!!!!
Steven is the one. Thanks Steven.
Great band. Quality, quality music. And a great clip too. Lot's of interesting information.
Manassas is played stills to this day, and I have the album in mint stills , and Steven's solo , always love his voice and guitar work and his band is always tops . a byrd and a buffalo.

Gotta love the legend!

I totally Agree ! - so many Good songs !

Loved Manassas bought two of their albums and saw them in the 70s at Vanderbilt I believe.
Manassas was a good as Sgt. Pepper. Maybe Better. Stills is great where-ever he goes. When I first heard Stills playing "Change Partners" I was Hooked.
This is truly interesting and well researched. Great photo montage!
