    good video, but if I could make a suggestion, if you are worried about transmitting on the public safety frequencies, instead of setting your transmit to an FRS frequency, you can set duplex to "off" . and you will not transmit at all, on any frequencies. well for that channel. this works in chirp, not sure about the other software.

    Hi. I've had the UV-5R for about a week; watched many videos on this subject and found yours the easiest to follow. Thank you. My problem is that I must be missing something. My primary intent was to use the unit as a scanner - listen in on police & fire incidents in the area with GF (now I'm going to get basic HAM license). Anyway, I followed the steps on the video and everything worked as it ought to. I don't get much activity though. I'm in a very urban area, Hartford CT, and would think that there would be a lot more on the radio. Plus, when I manually enter some frequencies, on the last digit I get a 'Cancel' response from the radio. When I use the FM, it picks-up many stations, even those further away than I would expect. I manually entered a few local fire/police frequencies I got from RadioReference (I signed-up for a subscription), some work, many don't. So, I think the radio it's self is okay. Can you give me an idea of what I might be doing wrong, please? On the Baofeng site I see the newest radio is available for about 65 bucks; do you think I ought to return the UV-5R and upgrade? I've spent about a week working on this and really haven't gotten what I expected; other than on the FM band I've gotten reception maybe on only 2 or 3 VHF signals? I'm frustrated right now. Any advice or instruction will be appreciated. Thank you.

    I recently purchased a few of these radios, and have to say I'm pretty impressed with its abilities. Programming the 'normal' 80channels for UHF CB use only took a few minutes via the radio itself. All the FREQ. are here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UHF_CB (AUS/NZ) Once you realise the Factory default 21channels need Deleting and not Editing its then a breeze to program in the frequencies. Use Menu#1, 25.0K STEP to manually step up from 476.425........... Cant wait for the cable to arrive and setup other ranges. Thanks for the tutorials.

    Do you know what happens if you hit PTT while scanning? Say I'm scanning local repeaters and want to respond once I hear activity on a repeater. Do I have to disable scanning, and then pick the repeater channel and then start transmitting? Or will it stick to the correct repeater and also stop scanning if I stop PTT?

    I've only had my UV-5R+ a few days and I have been able to program most of the Chirp information that you showed but I can't seem to get any of the Tones or DTCS to stay using the Chirp program. As soon as I enter say 88.5 it changes (None) in Tone Mode to (Tone). I'm thinking perhaps I have a setting in my phone interfering with entering these. Anyone else have this issue?

    Just FYI, to truly avoid breaking any laws, which actually includes transmitting on FMRS with this radio as you recommend, set duplex to off. If you set the duplex to off you can NOT transmit on that channel. FCC rules restrict FMRS to a type specific radio which the UV-5R does not meet. The only frequencies within the US that these little radios are legal to use on area HAM frequencies, and those require a license.

  • @SunnyWu

    @SunnyWu

    Yes, but a ton of people do it anyways, I'm guessing because family and friends cheap out and get those clam shell walkie talkies.. I mean if you keep the transmitting power down at 1W, it probably won't even transmit as far as those cheap ones (the FCC now allows them to be 2W)...

    The UV-5R can also be used for GMRS, so it is legal to use on non-ham frequencies with that license.

    +Galen Thurber Thanks for that info... I think that is correct... so the updated driver checks for the authentic Prolific chip and fails when an authentic chip is not present. The older driver works because it does not check for counterfeit cables. I have a Cable with the Baofeng brand label. Apparently it has the counterfeit chip in it so I have to use the old driver. www.amazon.com/Amcrest-Baofeng-Programing-Radios--Authentic/dp/B015YEM5C2/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1449583307&sr=8-2&keywords=baofeng+authentic+cableI wonder if the above cable would be a good way to go. 2-3 times as much money as the one I bought that is branded Baofeng but according to the description it does not use the prolific chip set and is compatible with the Baofeng radios

    Hello ! I don't know why you feel the need to use bogus transmit frequencies for all of the channels , it is still illegal , even at one watt you are running twice the power that that radio service was intended for . You can fix it one of two ways . in the column that you changed to give you " split " ( the duplex column ) , simply select " off " . Or if you don,t plan to transmit at all ( you need to be licensed to transmit on ham bands , and you need to know what you are doing to get a license ) You should go into the " chirp " software , under " settings " , " other settings " and uncheck the " VHF TX Enabled " and the " UHF TX Enabled " Then you will be legal ! Cheers , take care , and have a good day !!.......73

    I appreciate not wanting to transmit on public safety channels but what you suggest is still illegal, not to mention inconsiderate. You are transmitting on the repeater input frequency and even at low power could easily interfere because you are still using higher power than the legal transmitters on that frequency are using. Why teach people to break the law, especially when they don't know any better?
