In this video, I look back at how to problem solved drawing the details of a humming bird in one of my favourite drawings 'Approval'. It was really interesting to reflect on the drawing processes. I hope you find this deep dive useful.

I tried your technique of using plastic sheets as barriers when blending with brushes and it has COMPLETELY changed how I lay down pigment now

00:23 🖊 Using a 2B mechanical pencil (0.7mm) for larger drawings, adjusting pencil thickness based on drawing size. 01:07 🍃 Capturing the scale-like quality of hummingbird feathers, focusing on larger shapes before detailing strands. 01:53 📄 Managing paper movement while drawing, using pencil pressure as a gauge, keeping crisp highlights intact. 02:21 🖋 Transitioning to a 3.5M mechanical pencil for intricate details, planning for later blending techniques. 03:09 🎨 Layering technique with graphite, erasers, and pencils to achieve desired contrast and texture. 04:07 🌟 Creating the illusion of layered feathers by accentuating shadows and highlights together. 04:52 📏 Keeping pencils sharp for precision and texture, allowing tools to guide texture creation. 06:13 🖌 Experimenting with blending techniques (e.g., linseed oil) for achieving the "bokeh" effect in the background. 06:55 🕊 Employing pencil strokes against strong lines for a more organic feel in the drawing. 07:23 🖼 Emphasizing subtlety in graphite work, stepping back to maintain overall tone and highlights.

Thank you for this video. Some of us work this small all the time due to lack of space in our home or $$ for things so it’s been super helpful to see how to do something small with detail :)

May I ask which lamps you use? Are these just normal daylight lamps, or something more special? I have the problem that I don't have enough light at my workplace, but I'm unsure which lamps are good? Do you have a link or tip? and you are my absolute favorite artist. Your works are stunningly beautiful, sometimes disturbing, but always captivating! Thank you for sharing this with all of us!

i absolutely love your hyperrealism and stark contrasts. For the deep blacks, you are just mixing linseed oil and ground graphite? I would love to achieve those blacks in my pencil work.

Yeah but he doesn't really go into the oil mix unless you're talking about a more recent video, the one I watched was made before he began experimenting with oil and he was just grinding 9b graphite and applying it dry.@@yavannapeet3952

I find it unbelievable that you can use linseed oil and not ruin the paper. It's not without reason why oil painters use gesso etc to cover their canvas before using oil. There needs to be some layer between oil and the surface, othervise it's just a question of time... 🤔 But of course othervise - absolutely amazing art and content! 👍

@@justfreedude But if the video is "step by step", why leave out that one particular step? It's kind of important. The hardest part of realistic drawing is getting accurate proportions.
