Steep drive down Lombard Street, San Francisco, California

Drive down world famous Lombard Street, San Francisco, California.
April 2, 2012 - Shot with GoPro Hero2 Camera, 1080p with medium (127) degree perspective.
en.wikipedia.or...) says:
Lombard Street is best known for the one-way section on Russian Hill between Hyde and Leavenworth Streets, in which the roadway has eight sharp turns (or switchbacks) that have earned the street the distinction of being the crookedest [most winding] street in the world (though this title is contested).
The switchback's design, first suggested by property owner Carl Henry and instituted in 1922, was born out of necessity in order to reduce the hill's natural 27% grade, which was too steep for most vehicles. It is also a serious hazard to pedestrians, who are accustomed to a more reasonable sixteen-degree incline.
This section of the street, which is about 1⁄4 mile (400 m) long, is reserved for one-way traffic traveling east (downhill) and is paved with red bricks. The speed limit in this section is 5 mph (8 km/h).
In 1999, a Crooked Street Task Force was created to try to solve traffic problems in the neighborhoods around the winding section of Lombard Street. In 2001, the Task Force decided that it would not be legal to permanently close the block to vehicular traffic.
Instead, the Task Force decided to institute a summer parking ban in the area, to bar eastbound traffic on major holidays, and to increase fines for parking in the area. The Task Force also proposed the idea of using minibuses to ferry sightseers to the famous block, although residents debated the efficiency of such a solution, since one of the attractions of touring the area is driving along the twisting section of the street.

    With a Stick-shift you just leave in First Gear or Neutral for that matter and keep your foot on the brake and do 5 mph

    From wikipedia: "The switchback's design, first suggested by property owner Carl Henry[3] and instituted in 1922,[4] was born out of necessity in order to reduce the hill's natural 27º (51%) grade,[5] which was too steep for most vehicles." This would have been around 1.5 times as steep as the world's current steepest street. I'd love to see Lombard Street when it was straight.

    Those residents with a garage leading off of Lombard: When they want to park their cars into their garages, they have to back their cars in reverse. But first they have to stop their car a bit before, place one or two orange traffic cones onto the road to keep the car behind them OFF their bumpers, then move ahead a few feet to align the car with the garage, then back up towards the garage door, get out and take the traffic cone OFF the road, and then get back into the car and continue reversing the car into the garage. If this is NOT done then tourists are right up behind the driver and he/she cannot back into their garages. Still, a lot of horn honking by the tourists usually results anyways.

  • @herrbrahms
    @herrbrahms11 жыл бұрын

    It's maddening how people are constantly stopping on the descent. The right way to drive this hill is in 1st gear at constant speed. When you stop, people driving stickshifts are forced to clutch which takes away their ability to engine brake.
