Stedman Triples at All Saints, Stranton, Hartlepool

The third tower of the weekend took us to the older part of Hartlepool, and soon Stedman Triples was whizzing round! Parts of the church here date back to the 12th century, with the tower completed sometime in the 1300s.
The bells mostly date from 1907, cast by Mears and Stainbank of Whitechapel. Prior to these, there was a ring of three, of which the present 4th and (pre-Reformation) 6th bells survive - the other bell (dating from 1699) was recast to form the present 7th. The bells were fitted with ball bearings in 1951, again by Whitechapel.
The bells are not the easiest to ring accurately, with a lot of oddstruckness throughout the ring; we certainly benefited from pushing them along (listen out for the spanking Queens at 4:18!), and settled into a very good peal. Once again, the audio recording is used with kind permission of John Pladdys, who learnt to ring on the treble bell here (and was baptised in the now rather forlorn-looking font shown at 6:17)!

Fantastic video and what a wonderful restoration. They sound so together now are a retune. I have never worked out why Taylor's use straight head stocks then profiled ones for heavier bells. It can't be because of weight as often there are bells heavier than the tenor on heavier peals that have straight head stocks. Is it a traditional thing. Anyway Taylor's did a beautiful job and the ringing was cracking too.

Although not the best sounding I quite like them! I do tend to like pretty strange bells though...

They certainly have character, but it's amazing what good ringing can do for the bells; it made the difference between them being OK and gruesome! Not easy to get right but they were strangely likeable when whacked along a bit

I always find these bells rather hard work and they sound like aluminium cans.

They certainly aren't the easiest or prettiest! Better when shoved along a bit - and certainly the good ringing left a better impression of these bells (I've been back since and rung another peal - the 6 is not a nice bell at all!). It was certainly a benefit to come here with a strong band who could lay into them and ring them well - because I can imagine it being very, very easy to ring these badly!

@@user-bp6yl3di6p the bells have been rehung and retuned in 2022 (including the ancient 6th). It was found during the work that the 4th was of exceedingly poor tone, and this bell has been replaced by a Taylor stock bell.
