SteamVR Basic Settings Explained + Potential FidelityFX and NIS Performance boost
Ойындар
How to start with your new SteamVR setup and how to install and use AMD FidelityFX and Nvidia Image Scaler with any SteamVR game. Mainly I am interested about racing and driving games and therefore interest in this tutorial is car games. As a example I show the performance boost that can be obtained when playing Dirt Rally 2.0 but this will work with most SteamVR games.
Virtual Reality is best way to experience Driving games and due to increased GPU prices these software solution are essential for development of VR and enjoyment. Additionally performance updates for upcoming Metaverse are essential for mass adoption.
This is a video about explaining all things I found confusing or interesting about how VR works and how to improve the performance.
This might or might not work for Oculus users - please let me know in the comments if you have any luck.

It's taken me a long time to understand a lot of this, prior to this video; but this has taken guesswork out of some of it - and the FidelityFX and NIS interaction explanation was very helpful indeed, as it's something I've not played with before. Thank you for an excellent explanation and tutorial. I will be recommending this video and your channel to a number of my VR friends 😎👍🏽
This is an amazing video. I was so confused about all this stuff before, but now it's crystal clear. Thank you so much!

Do you people notice that VR videos on youtube are not new? That is because the entire industry is in GIANT trouble for being CROOKS!! Stand by for maybe foreign manufacturers to do better. American VR companies hate customers.

Good video this made me experience Dirt Rally 2.0 much smoother than before! Thanks mate! Although DR 2.0 runs poorly in VR I still have frame spikes (violet spikes in Steam VR analyzer) every few seconds while running on 6-7ms the whole time (Intel 12700F, 32GB, RTX 3080ti, Windows 11).
One of those video where i got the feeling the creator knows really what he is talking about. Thanks help me a lot.

Thanks! I still feel bit confused about some of this stuff, but tried to do my research for this one. One thing I could maybe update is things about motion smoothing. I noticed that if GPU is working at 100% or near it, you start getting weird warping effects that that's why I recommend having it off. However if you set the setting so that gpu has some overhead, the motion smoothing can work really well and you can force fps to 45 but have it feel like 90. Works wonders in DCS for example

@@Nizcik * How you calculate how much ms. gives me for example 66 FPS gives me really a lightbulb. Before i see your video i dont know for what the ms display is. On the motion smoothing : i play currently Skyrim VR and i turnt it off because i got the feeling it robs fps and i dont like the warp effekt you mention. I prefer to turn the sumpersampling a little down in steamvr so i can get the 90 fps without sometimes warp. I still have to try FidelityFX , i´m excited how it turns out

@@Patchy0211 Oh right the really easiest way to use the FSR is the OpenFSR App: github.com/tappi287/openvr_fsr_app It will download latest FSR version. And after my video same dude who made the openvr_fsr made more advance version called VRPERFKIT. The OpenFSR App will install VRPERFKIT as well or the original mod that I mentioned in this video called openvr_fsr.
I'm curious - for the in-game resolution settings, what do you set those to? Do you try to match as closely as possible to the resolution per eye displayed in the Steam settings?
@Nizcik
Жыл бұрын
Vr games often have super sampling setting that acts the same as the resolution slider in steam VR. Then some games show separately a resolution for mirrored view of the VR on your flat screen. This resolution does not matter as it should just mirror what is happening in VR. Personally I try to have that mirror screen smaller than my desctop so I can interact with windows while in VR. The super sampling in game and the slider in steam VR will multiply so if you set 150% (1.5 multiplier in steam VR ) and same 1.5 super sampling in game settings - you end up with 1.5x1.5=2.25. You would get same end result by setting the steam VR slider to 225% and in game super sampling to 1 or other way round.
Thanks !

Yes, it should. Unfortunately I have not had time to test this much. In DR2 picture looks bit different when using NIS so you might want to try this with NIS on and off to see what you prefer
Hi, I'm a complete noob when it comes to vr settings. I mostly play ACC but with a 2060 S GPU the res on my quest 2 is quite bad. I've tried all the settings on dlss and fsr on acc, but with no real improvement. I haven't as yet tried this openvr fsr mod and wanted to check whether this mod still makes sense after dlss and fsr have been made available officially on ACC? In other words, does this openvr mod improve performance over and above the improvement offered by dlss and fsr through the in game settings? Thanks much, S
@Nizcik

I haven't had time to test difference between dlss and FSR, but ACC fas from the start tricky to set up with FSR. I would assume native dlss would be better, but again I haven't tested this. Doing these tests are on my bucket list, I might post a video about it at some point
At the beginning you suggested leaving Steam global setting on default (for you, 150%), and then a few minutes later, you suggested adjusting Steam global setting to 100% and raising the per-application slider (or in-game slider) to 150%. Is there a reason for this?
@Nizcik
Жыл бұрын
Steam default setting should be optimized based in your computer parts and mostly it will work and that is fine. Idea of setting the global setting to 100% is to get more control. With this you will manually adjust the super sampling to a value that provides you best performance and picture quality. I would get some stutters sometimes with motion smoothing kicking in every once in while with the default settings. Manually I could tune the resolution to value where I know I will get smooth framerate throughout. And I can do this optimization for each game separately.

When you don't use controllers and use only the button in the headset - you should be able to use the dot. Be sure to switch off the controllers because I noticed recently that if steam menu is opened with controller - I can't close it with button on headset
how do you get that settings menu to pop up? im not sure how i can do it
@Nizcik

If you mean SteamVR menu, you can click on a button on your headset OR menu/power on button on your controller OR from desktop go to small SteamVR window and go to settings there. In VR when you get the menu open there is a cogwheel on bottom left for settings and after that on bottom right you should be able to toggle between advanced settings or basic settings.

Hey! I don't have Quest 2 so I don't have good advices. However in our community Barrel Rollers one person had issues in VR when they used Ultrawide 4k 120hz display. When plugging only 1080p 60hz monitor in, performance in VR was better. You can try lowering your monitors resolution and see if that helps performance in VR. Also in out Barrel Rollers community we have multiple VR users, so I recommend joining the discord (link in description) and we are happy to help troubleshooting these kind of issues

Ahh, yes, things are bit different with oculus. However there is new plug-in from fholger called vr performance kit (vrperfkit). That by the description has better support for oculus or at least it should be coming out. I will make updated video on new things, but google "vrperfkit github" and you should find it and read the description there. The FSR app also installs the vrperfkit now no you can give that a go
