Steamtown NHS - Baldwin 26

On June 26th, 2016, Penn Rail Videos made a visit to Scranton to see the recently-restored 0-6-0 #26 at the Steamtown National Historic Site. This engine was built in 1929 and used as the shop switcher at the Baldwin Locomotive Works plant in Eddystone, PA. The engine is painted in its as-built olive green paint and silver trim. With a color scheme like this, 26 matches very closely with the CNJ cars on the "Nay Aug Limited". We'll catch the train as it traverses the Steamtown yard, and passes by the former Delaware Lackawanna & Western Station in Scranton, now a hotel.

    Nice! I'm really looking forward to seeing 26 in action myself when I come out here for Railfest. I loved the shot of the train passing the hotel/old station building.

    This steam locomotive is special to a particular rail service, only held once a month by Steamtown.

    Both Canadian engines are out of commission for work and rebuilding sadly. It is unknown when they are supposed to return to operational service.

    Its sad that there are only a few of these types of little engines left. There is one in Heber Valley Railroad Utah, NO 300, that just recently went under restoration. It has been in the Heber Valley Railroad for a while and has rusted a lot. So just last year in 2017 someone said if they won't fix it you gotta do it yourself, and he is fixing it himself. kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y41-rsd9cc6Wkdo.html

    How is the engine "chuffing" without moving? Or is it waaaay out of sync?

  • @organbuilder272

    @organbuilder272

    It is either an air compressor - least likely since the engine is not using air for anything. or the water injector - pumping water into the boiler under pressure. The engine is chuffing because the exhaust sice of the pump is directed up the stack to provide induced draft for the fire.

    +Kyle Dean more modern engines used air brakes versus steam being they are more dependable. even before that they had vacuum brakes.

    The air pump is working,and the brake pipe and the blast nozzle are connected,making it louder.Most engine's air pumps are muffled,but obviously #26 isn't.

    That's all very nice but why waste time viewing empty tracks after the train goes by. Why not show the running gear of the engine. Rail cars are of little interest after one viewing. It is the locomotive that is the center of attention.

    Get someone to voice that whistle. You need to adjust the base plate that forms the windway for the steam to come out and hit the upper lip of the whistle. Go find an organ builder - they know what's wrong with it.

    You should've heard it in 2017,they put a lower whistle on,and now the same whistle is back and all cleaned up and sounds great.And,the engineer wasn't even opening it all the way...
