Wait, you mean there’s more than one class?! They all look like subclasses of each other! (I’m joking)

My number 1 favorite steam locomotive engine train with tender full of coal and water introduced in 1950 is the 4-6-0 (Ten Wheeler) GWR 4073 Class 7029 Clun Castle.

In the 1920's, 4079 Pendennis Castle managed to dent LNER price by starting faster than any LNER pacifics from King's Cross during an exchange trial while the managing directors expected it to slip like hell being lighter than 4472 & it's class and GWR and LNER both boasted they had the most powerful express locomotive. GWR Castles have a higher tractive effort than A1s or A3s. Look it up if you don't believe me.

I loved Castles even more when I heard about how the people who designed Flying Scotsman snuck into a shed and looked at how Castles worked thus making the Scotsman so fast

Owen Meschter the A1 predated the Castle iirc. Story sounds like BS to me.

Doctor Emil the Flying Scotsman was originally A1 and broke 100mph as the A1. It lasted until postwar as an A1 before ring rebuilt, IIRC. The A3 was a fairly mild upgrade over the A1, in both scope and performance, anyway.

Dubsy 102 I was intending to say that the LNER's engineers could have taken a look at the Castles because of inspirational reasons.

ANYONE know why GWR was sooo reluctant to use outside valve gear ? As a kid in S Wales I had to put up with 'derived motion' and was thus deprived of the glorious clanking of outside valve gear . Any replies appreciated

I think it was mainly a matter of aesthetics; Churchward didn't like the look of it so that was that. Also, the are some mechanical advantages to inside Stephenson Link Motion which the GW used on all its 2-cyl locos. As for clanking, I think you'll find it's not the valve gear that clanks (it's too light for that) but the coupling rods on their pins where wear has taken place. I have heard inside-cylinder 4-4-0s clanking (Dukedogs, Southern L and D1). Quite a nice sound. I've only heard it when the loco is coasting and if it occurs under power there is serious wear.
