Steam Condenser For Brewzilla Grainfather G30 & Digiboil For HomeBrewers
My overview and first impressions of this interesting well priced new product that suits Brewzilla & Digiboil 35L / 65L, the Grainfather G30 and likely more home brewing systems.

Excellent and very helpful as normal. I've order one yesterday from Kegland Site on Ali and it should be here in a couple of weeks (only 4 left). I was seriously considering a B40 but now I think my G30 will do just fine for now until I get a lot more brews under my belt and save up for a very long time haha :)

We have the Spike Brewing steam condenser lid for our 30 gallon SS Brewtech kettle. It fits just about right but we clamp it down a little to get a good suction. It works very well and greatly reduces boil off which is great for us as we are running close to a full boil kettle so we can make more beer! I have found it helps to let it boil for a few minutes and let it settle down before adding the first boil hop addition as the hops can foam up and just coat the inside of the condenser lid which is a pain. Learnt that from experience. Our control panel has a plug socket and switch to control the pump which is useful. It uses a LOT of water but we run the waste water via a garden hose and another little submersible pump up to our pool. The biggest benefit is that we have reduced our heating element power consumption to 40-50% and of course we no longer have steam flying everywhere and dripping from the ceiling of the garage back into the kettle.

Did my first brew with this today. Tested with water first and all was fine but with wort and hops its boiling over, even though I've let it settle out first. This was just with the 1900 w element. Will try just the 500 w next time. Worked as it was meant to with a lesser volume of wort.

Thank you for this interesting video. Just a few weeks too late for me, though :-). I am looking forward to switch from my Grainfather G30 to a Brewtools B40 in the future. Since I recently migrated from our house's main kitchen to my own brew kitchen without any possibility to let the steam out, I had to find a steam condensing solution and decided to buy the Brewtools Steam Condenser before even having a B40 kettle. I use the lid from the Grainfather Conical Fermentor, which also fits well on the G30. Then I added a 1,5" to 2" Adapter to connect the Brewtools Steam Condensor. This setup worked really well in my first two brews.

I see this product relevant for boil times of 60 minutes or greater. Although I understand the purpose of this device, I am now starting to do 30 minute boils, and between guarding for boil-overs and adding the immersion chiller five minutes before the end of boil, I frankly see this product as more of a hassle than useful for just 15-20 minute use it will see for each boil.

I am interested in solving this issue myself, for my G30. I'm having some difficulty finding a UK version of these products as of Aug 2022. It would be useful to be able to boil indoors! The other option I had considered is using a portable inline extractor/ventilator - these are an axial flow fan and a flexible hose, but I'm not sure how obnoxiously loud this would be for my neighbours!

Hi! Did you adjust the power for the boil ? I know they recommend to set it to 50% power and adjust the boil of rate on the "original" steam condenser they sell at Brewshop. I bought the brewzilla condenser my self, and are planning to test this in the coming days. Also at the "original" condenser they say that is uses 0.6 L pr minute at 4 bar pressure. would it not be in the same ballpark with the brewzilla, or do this simply need less water. As I have read from your comments, it is just a mist and you suspect arroundd 3 liters for a complete boil ? Or did I misunderstand that part. Thanks anyways for GREAT content videos. Keep em coming :)

Many thanks Svein. I do not know much about their version but this one has been designed by professional engineers and its design is positioned around water economy. A very low fine mist did the job really well as shown in this video. I no longer have a G30, I sold that when I got the G40, so I have not tested this on anything but the Brewzilla which has more powerfull heating elements compared to the G30 and was run at full power. Not that you can adjust this on the current Brewzillas though. I suspect this will come with Gen 4 this summer.

Having just purchased (waiting on delivery) the Grainfather S40, I too, am trying to figure out a decent steam condenser solution. No one, that I'm aware of, makes a domed lid that is 19" (48.25cm) in diameter. The only solution I can imagine is drilling into an existing (or another) Grainfather s40 lid, putting in the 2" TC Bulkhead and then attaching the Brewzilla steam condenser. The flat lid is not ideal but without a domed lid there's very little that can be done currently. The good thing is the lid for the S40 clamps down so that takes the "lid's going to topple over" aspect out of the way. :D Thanks for the video!

    How about dimethyl sulfide?

SMM levels in grain are at an all time low and issues with DMS these days tend to be fermentation driven. A common finding if you were to draw multiple samples throughout the boil is that after only 30-45 min DMS levels are below detectable levels (under 25ppb) usually when brewing with mainstream malt. However, if you are using low modified farm malt then this could be different.

David, any experience with this and the boil off of DMS? ex: Any chance the DMS will be trapped in the condencer and would it be beneficial to leave the GF open without the the steam condencer attached at the very end of the boil? Also, on my first attempt at feeding in 0.6 liter of water per minute, the discharge water is not warm as expected. Any idea how this is possible, as the kettle was boiling fine at 100 degrees..?

Hi, DMS these days from malt is super unlikely. No issues around using these. The steam water will cool quickly as it is in small amounts.

Zależy od ciśnienia wody, ale nie dużo. U mnie 5 10l się zbiera ale to też skroplin

The only way to know is with a flow meter, which I do not have, though it is just a fine mist which could be emulated into a bucket through the parts without steam to condense for a measurement.

@@DavidHeathHomebrew The measure is very easy. All water in bucket minus water from stream. You knew how many wather is from stream, becouse is the difference between pre and post boiling.

I believe the only accurate way would be by using a flow meter. You can estimate by other means though, as you mention.

I do not like the amount of hair in your water. Yes, it will filter out, but...yuck! Reminds me of the time me and my brew partner used his house and bottles, ended up with a cockroach in the last bottle of a great tasting imperial stout. Of course, we picked the bug out and continued drinking, but we were kind of grossed out too. Kind of.

It can happen. Beers brewed during the summer can have a fair amount of extra protein too.

I guess it depends on your situation to determine if it is unnecessary. If you are brewing outside then sure! As for expensive it is all relative but this is cheaper than most other similar solutions.

@@DavidHeathHomebrew Hi David, Great video's, very informative thanks.. After looking at the video i came to the conclusion that a straight up dephlegmator would do a better job, half the size and cost of the advertised piping / Condenser.

Thank you. I have not tried one personally but I guess you would need to do some custom work and then testing. I think if it was a better and cheaper option that this would be the route other companies would take to tackle steam in brewing though.

@@barmyarmy1363 can you provide a link to it? The issue might be getting the condensate back into the kettle
