Staying in a Russian village with my dad | How we heat the house in winter

My father lives in a small wooden house in the Ural mountains. He's a bit traditional and keeps his home in a conservative way - there's no central heating or water, so you need to bring the water to your house and prepare the woods to keep it warm in winter. I've decided to share one day in our house with you :)

My daughter in law came here from Russia as a six year old. She had to leave because of religious persecution. She is the most loving and caring person. When this 90 lb. little person was pregnant with twins and working full time, she went each night to feed her husband's aunt who was in a nursing home. She also donated a kidney to her sister. The vast number of Russians are loving and peaceful. They, more than likely, aren't thrilled with the direction their leader has taken them to.

In south Texas, no one I know blames the Russian people. And down here, It doesn't have to be that cold for us, our dogs and cats, to just want to stay inside. Roller skates. Different but somehow the same. I just found this channel today but I have watched her earliest and newest. I live in a forest. I am 700 feet above sea level in a small village 1 hour north of Montreal. I like to heat the house with mapple wood with a slow combustion stove. When I'm not at home it's electric heating. But it’s true that it’s a lot of woodworking, but it gets me moving ! We cook with gas and we have a generator connected to the electrical panel. This way, in the event of a breakdown, we are autonomous, a sort of ``off the grid`` living. It's sad that your dad is going to lose his traditional fire place, a beautiful piece of art. Say hello to him 😀👋

Hi Eli...I grew up in a small mid-west American town surrounded by countryside where my aunt & uncle had a large farm. (I am 70 now and this was during the 'Cold War') But as a young boy hearing about the vastness of Russia and your cold winters, I couldn't help wondering how could life there be so different when we too were surrounded by vast countryside with many farms and experienced winters with big snows? And I still think there must be a great many things that Russians have in common with mid-western Americans. For instance: Love of country (not patriotism per se, but the surrounding earth where one grows up). Also, Love of family. Love of life, church, food, tradition, music, culture. Would not these loves unite us if we were to meet? Russian urban culture too must be preserved!!! It has produced unrivaled dance companies such as the Bolshoi, and gave us the modern theatre led by Checkhov & Staislavski. Russia gave us artists such as Rublev, Shishkin & Chagall, musicians as Tchaikovsky & Rachmaninoff, towering writers like Tolstoy, Pushkin and hundreds more genius' in each category. The exquisite, inimitable architecture of St. Basil's and thousands of Russian Orthodox churches! You Eli, prove that there is no better education than travel! With your open mind, acceptance of others and appreciation of different cultures, this is the hallmark of a true "student of life". I’m sure you value your travels. May you have many more beautiful ones in the future and surely you will because you bring a beautiful mind.

Fellow American here. Isn't it amazing watching people wag their fingers at Russia for the horrific crime of invading another country, after the US invaded Iraq in 2003 on a completely phony pretext? And how many civilian casualties did we cause in that war? Hundreds of thousands? Either people have forgotten about this already, or for whatever reason, they think it's somehow OK when we do it. And of course, Iraq isn't the only place where we've caused death, destruction and misery. We've left other trails of destruction in Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, we orchestrated the overthrow of the government in Egypt that made a mess out of that country, we're bombing Somalia, and we're helping Saudi Arabia bomb the snot out of Yemen. And for what? At least I can understand why the Russians would invade Ukraine. They don't want a military alliance hostile to them parking troops and missiles just over their border any more than we would like it if Mexico or Canada formed a military alliance against us with China and then stationed Chinese missiles just across our border. In fact, we didn't like it one bit when the Soviets tried to put ballistic missiles in Cuba. We were even ready to go to nuclear war to stop them!

From the people of Ireland - a neutral non NATO country we stand with Ukraine and the Irish people will never ever support Russia in anyway in the future. Russian murder acts are unforgiveable and the 195 plus countries in the world agree what Russia is doing is dispicible acts of violence on innocent people living in their neutral non NATO country just like ireland. I wish good health on your Daddy. This brought back precious memories from my childhood in Germany. Look! You make pancakes just like us!!! I could almost taste how delicious they are. It is sad that the stove will be destroyed when electricity gets out in the house, but your dads health is more important. I pray that you will continue to be the ambassador. 😘😘😘

We will not. This war will get worse and Ukraine's suffering will increase dramatically. As will that of the people of Russia as Russia becomes more isolated from the civilized world. I don't see those sanctions and blockages being lifted any time soon, and those will create economic catastrophe, less access to technology, culture, free communications. In short, everything that makes a country globalized and modern. Even when the shooting stops, the division and hostility created from this last far longer. We can appreciate Eli's content, and I too love watching her videos, but normal for Russians won't be back for a long time.

Wonderful work in breaking cultural barriers among people living in different parts of the world. I am living in Western part of Canada. Shoveling snow is a common task in the winter, similar to your experience. Love your optimistic attitude to life and people. Hope the current Russia-Ukraine conflict will be over soon, returning peace to both of the people.

Eli, respect from an old retired Irishman living in SE Asia. I always enjoy your video…. for at least the past couple of years. Your story telling (that’s what it is..) is wonderful. Even though I love the warmer climates of SE Asia, your videos make me seriously want to visit the Russian Federation.. such diversity 🇮🇪💚🇷🇺

I loved this video. My fiancé is from Sosnogorsk in the Komi region and I plan on visiting her parents with her this coming Christmas. She mentions what is done in her village the same as you just described in this video. Even though I live in the very nice and warm State of Florida in the US. I am looking forward to something so new and daring as jumping on the snow as you so "warmly" illustrated. Or maybe not! )). Много благословений вам.
