    I have a statistics professor that almost did not go over vocab or explanations of equations at all while working full-time, taking 13 credits and paying for my schooling out of pocket. So it means a lot to me when I don't accomplish my goals in a class and I don't have much free time to do "self-teaching". THIS VIDEO HELPED ME OUT SO MUCH AND I AM VERY GRATEFUL FOR THIS GUY PUTTING THIS UP. I would donate money to this guy if I had a way to.

    Ways to measure the variance (dispersion): The measure of dispersion tells us a lot about our data. For example, if the variance (spread) of values is large, than the mean is not a good reflection of our data points. However, if the variance of values is narrow, than the mean is a good reflection of our data set. Remember: the point of the central tendency (mean, median, and mode) is to explain our data set with a single value. If the single value is not a good reflection of the data set, than the value is unimportant. 1. Range (Max Value - Lowest Value = Range): The distance between the largest and lowest data value. For example, the data set (1, 2, 3, 4, 5), The max value is (5) and the lowest value is (1). Therefore, it will be 5 - 1 = 4. The range is 4. 2. Standard Deviation: The SD tells us how spread out the data is. It will help us determine if a result is statistically significant or a part of an expected variation. We only use SD when we are working with approximately normal (bell curve) data sets. When we say the standard deviation is low - we are saying the data is tightly clustered around the mean (sharp cone shape). When we say the standard deviation is high - we are saying the data is dispersed over a wider range of values (Imagine a hill). When you work with the SD you will encounter the 68 - 95 - 99.7 rule. It is saying, 68% of the data will be one SD from the mean. 95% of the data will be two standard deviations from the mean. 99.7% of the data will be three standard deviations from the mean.

    If we do the actual reality math it’s a different value. The actual differences between x and the mean are5,3,8 which total 16. Then divide by 3 to get the average of the distances. As you see doesn’t come out to 7. Reality doesn’t equate to formula.

  • @mycotina6438
    @mycotina6438 Жыл бұрын

    Great video prof, but I think the explanation for why we use the squared the difference between the data value and the mean in calculating the standard deviation is a bit off. Negative data point and a positive mean doesn't cancel each other out. For example, consider a data point of -6 and a mean of 6, then (x - x_bar) would be (-6 - 6) which is -12. So it doesn't justify why we can't use absolute value instead of squaring it to get a "positive" distance. Actually, the calculation using an absolute value even has its own name, called the "mean deviation". It is just that the squared version has nicer mathematical properties and therefore more commonly used. There's an interesting discussion on the mathematic stackexchange for this, just try to google it!
