StarTalk Podcast: Cosmic Queries - Cosmic Conundrums with Neil deGrasse Tyson
Ғылым және технология
On this episode of StarTalk Radio, Neil deGrasse Tyson and comic co-host Chuck Nice are answering your fan-submitted questions on everything from discovering extraterrestrial life to traveling through dimensions. Anything that you’ve cosmically wondered about, we are ready to answer.
To start, Neil and Chuck ponder where they would pilot the USS Enterprise if they were sitting in the Captain’s chair. You’ll learn why Neil would take a tour of his own “backyard” before setting off anywhere else. We investigate how time works as you move closer and further from the edge of the universe. Neil tells us how to kill a black hole, and the answer may surprise you.
We discuss dark matter. You’ll hear why dark matter should really be called dark gravity. You’ll explore how we study dark matter even though it doesn’t interact electromagnetically. Then, we investigate the Higgs boson, the Higgs field, and the Large Hadron Collider. Neil shares a helpful metaphor to understand the Higgs boson that involves a Hollywood party, Chuck, and Beyoncé.
Neil and Chuck debate which is more likely to happen - extraterrestrial contact or the ability to travel through the dimensions. You’ll learn more about higher dimensions and how they interact with the reality of other dimensions. We investigate the possibility of complex organisms existing in the liquid masses of our solar system, like on Enceladus or Europa. Neil gives us a lesson in thermodynamics in order to explain how life survives.
Lastly, you’ll explore Low Earth orbit. Discover why people who live along the equator would weigh less than people living elsewhere. All that, plus, Neil explains how fast the Earth would have to be rotating for you to float.

The party analogy to explain mass is so awesome. A few years ago I used it to explain mass to my 8 year old daughter and not only did she get it, but she explained it to her friend like a year later. It made it super understandable to her so much that she was able to explain it to another person. I think I used her and a KZreadr as the people, but that's just bring relevant. ;)
@nikhilsomvanshi9960

That's awesome. Although you would want her to see ahead of the analogy too. It's a great analogy sure, but it's an analogy hence ought to break at some point. Wanna make sure the kids can realize the stuff.
I don’t know how long I’ve been subscribed for but I saw an interview with NDT so of course I went down the rabbit hole of KZread. I know who chuck is just through entertainment but these two together makes me wanna keep learning, I catch myself telling my kids, brothers & parents about what I learn listening to y’all have a conservative or just answering questions. my little brother is 10 and is hooked! Thank you for making science cool for this younger generation! Oh and I keep looking up 💕

That explanation for mass using the party was absolutely incredible. I've always found the boson and mass thing confusing but this honestly blew my understanding away. That was great and I finally understand what it means. Thank you as always Mr Neil!
Now I understand higgs boson, at last. That was a great depiction Dr Tyson 👌🏽
@nicot9305
3 жыл бұрын
But what differentiates the Chuck particle from the Beyonce particle, in layman's terms? But I can see how the same field can show different effects on different particles. I guess the next step, for me, is to try to understand what causes the "star power", in this metaphor.
@ha-zg3gp
3 жыл бұрын
I’m guessing it’s the energy in the particle, which causes fluctuations on the Higgs boson field. Why does it fluctuate this field? Well we don’t know, it just happens. Maybe we will find out when we figure out string theory.
I just want to say that I love this show! Neil is as awesome as ever and I think Chuck is amazing!! I’m a big fan! The 2 of ya’ll are great together!! Ya’ll really groove together... don’t change a thing. I hope Neil and Chuck continue to do this show together for a very long time!!😃😃
I love listening to star talk on my commute. It randomly plays episodes but listening to this discussion about different dimensions made me think that maybe we have already “seen” extraterrestrial life. Is it possible the UFO sightings are things being sent from a different dimension we cannot explain. It wouldn’t have to be a spacecraft, that is just the only way we can make sense of it with our current understanding.

Got to say, I knew about Neil deGrasse Tyson for a long while but never actually paid attention to it. I'm the type of person who, while working on something, I usually have to listen to music, hate silence. Started watching a video, interesting, then it basically became my daily thing. As I prep, planned for school, I have my second screen on him, learning. Got to say that learning about the universe has never been so easy and so intriguing. Thanks guys for all the amazing videos, and thanks Neil deGrasse Tyson, for being such an amazing person.
Man how i love startalk im addicted to this show as im to knowledge and Mr Tyson has a special way of explaining complicated things in a very easy and special way THANK YOU Im really sad tho that it took me this long, as im 38 years old, to finally understand what i love to learn and know more about in life

Can we know our location in the universe? Are we closer to one edge than the other?
@apathyangel1
3 жыл бұрын
From what I understand, no. Because we can only see as far as 46 billion lightyears away, and current models estimate that the Universe is _at least_ 250 times that, and possibly infinite. But, since we can't see farther than 46 billion lightyears, we have no way of measuring the size of the universe and our placement within it. We can see our placement within the galactic supercluster we belong to, though. It's called Laniakea, and it contains around 100,000 galaxies. The Milky Way is located on one the right fringe edges of Laniakea. And there are some really incredible illustrations depicting the supercluster and our position in it
@ha-zg3gp

How could we know that our universe is that many times bigger?
Dr Tyson your ability to communicate these concepts to us dolts is truly second to none. “Party field” helped me understand the Higgs field better than ever before. Thank you!
that Higg's boson particle/field explanation was just bomb. nailed it.

I'm just now catching up with videos on this channel but talking about the orbits and the satellite signal causing delays in communications at 23,000 miles up. This is easily observable by watching program on your television over an antenna in one room of your house and in another room of your house watching the same program over satellite TV. There is a noticeable delay the antenna you will hear this people speak a few seconds before you hear the people say the exact same words over the satellite if you stand in a area where you can hear both at the same time. I always assumed that the reason for the delay was the satellite TV being so far away that there was a delay in the signal reaching my television and this proved it for me so thank you.

Excelent show!!!!. Many thanks for sharing your physics knowledge. Btw, I think I noticed a small error at 21:55 : When a 4d hypercube passes through our 3d world we would expect to see a normal cube of constant size for as long as the hypercube crosses our world. We would not see a cube increasing its size and then shrinking until it disappears. Similarly to when we pass a 3d cube through a 2d paper, where the slice of the cube is a constant square. A hypesphere on the other hand would give us a slice of increasing/decreasing size
Chuck's Jamaican accent is on point!
Cosmic Queries are the best !!!!!!
Your discussion of mass and inertia inspired me to think of an answer to the question "Why do heavy objects and light objects fall at the same rate?" The answer goes like this. "You know how it is hard to get a heavy object to move? Gravity has the same problem."

Mr. Tyson, I am a long time viewer and admirer of your work. Me myself, I have always LOVED science, but math... not so much, so I turn to those more suited such as yourself for my research when writing novels. I have published several novels, most fantasy, horror and humor. I started a science fiction novel quite some time ago, but it is lacking in the scientifically correct area. After The Expanse, I went back and read my story and found it lacking. So I need you to co author this novel with me. 🙂🙂🙂
