Start Performing Big Turns In The Surf With These Tips

Спорт

In this in-depth video Kale shows you How To Surf: Turning Your Surfboard. This is a really important topic to begin looking at because literally everything in surfing comes back to the ability to turn on a wave.
Turning on a wave allows us to chase and stay within the 'power zone' and to perform the manoeuvres we wana' perform!
Turning on a surfboard must always be considered a whole-body movement, not just a segmented process of the legs, torso or shoulders, but a kinetic chain of events linking together all three.

@@HowtoRip can you guide us on how to ease into bigger waves on a shortboard? I surf head high to head and a half high (I'm 6'1) happily on my SUP but on a shortboard I find battling the rips when it's over 5ft a bit intimidating. Any ocean navigating/survival tips to be in the right spot appreciated 👌

Small boards allow learners to control their craft without hitting people in crowded surf. I found for core strength, Palloff press/isometric holds to really help me and for leg strength, rear foot elevated single leg split squats felt like they had a good degree of carry over to surfing. They are easy to load up at home too as you don't need much weight. Hope this helps someone. :)

I disagree with moving to a fish quickly. Beginners should learn to turn longboards and midlengths before learning to turn on a fish. Their problem is usually standing in the middle of the longboard and attempting turns. Then they blame the longboard for being too big. You touched on this but beginners typically focus way too much on the upper body and not on getting their back foot back far enough on the board. The back foot also shifts slightly up and down depending on the wave face. Also, beginners dont know when to turn on the wave. I see people pump themselves off a wave and then try to cutback. Or they bottom turn on a closeout and get hit in the head. You could make a video of just beginners and show what they do wrong on their turns.

It depends on who the beginner is. If it was an older person I’d recommend staying on a larger board I guess because they wouldn’t have the same alacrity as a younger beginner. But, shifting from a big board to a smaller one cuts down the learning curve - I guess there are some things which need to be mastered like taking off, catching waves really easily and cutting across the face FIRST before the transition takes place.

Depends on the person.. Whether you spend a little longer on a longboard first or not.. the transition is going to mess with you. As long as you have the basics down and you can turn and go down the line and you feel like the huge board may be holding you back... I think that’s a good time to transition.

I've got into the habit of doing a half-hearted cutback when I ride toe-side. I start it and my back foot comes around (like a check-turn in snowboarding) but then I struggle to twist my head and upper body through the movement without losing my balance, so I end up looking down the line and can't complete the cutback. It's not an issue heel-side as I don't need to look over my shoulder when rotating (if that makes sense?). I'll give that squat stretch/exercise a go, might remind me to engage my back and head during that rotation through the turn, but if you have any other tips I'd really appreciate it?

You have a great technique! The exercizes are good but actually misleading because they're always weight-centered, while any turn start with a weight shift and transfer weight from one leg to the other while involving the arms. So weight centered exercize are misleading in my opinion (squats included). It may lead to a flat board style, at best.

Hi, not that I’m this level yet but this kind of contradicts another you tuber , surf simply, who says that body movement should be kept minimal unless you’re advanced and going back into the wave. He says you should initiate with your feet, granted in an open shoulder position for bs turn. Are you initiating with you eyes and shoulders simultaneously with you foot work? Little confused now, is it just another way of ‘skinning a cat’ to get the same results.
