Start of LION TAKEOVER? N. AVOCA Males STRIKE FIRST!

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

MalaMala Safari Moments: Episode 72.
The beginning of a takeover? A Northern Avoca male comes across a Gowrie male trying to mate with a Kambula lioness. He chooses fight and the Gowrie male, flight. Elephants interrupt the chase. Youngsters from the Kambula pride are in ear shot of the commotion and they run for the hills.
...
From MalaMala Game Reserve to wherever you are in the world, we'll bring you moments from our daily safaris in one of Africa's most iconic private game reserves. This is essentially a continuation of our 'Rangers in Isolation' series which was filmed during the national Lockdown.

The Kambula lioness wasn't at all interested in the attention from the Gowrie male, knowing the Avocca male was present. Seems she had already made up her mind that she was done with him, though I'm probably reading too much into it. At the end she was wrapping the Avocca male around her pinky claw, big time, giving the cubs time to get away. Fascinating!

That barren lioness has probably mated with all the BBoys a hundred times. That must be so heartbreaking for her, She's keeps trying tho, thinking a different male might be the magic. It does seem to me that dominance within the coalition does not translate when foreign lions are involved. Scrapper of the BB boys was the omega but was the first to engage when it came to outsiders. Mr T was another example, for a long time dominated by his older brothers but truly hated other lions. Notch Grimace was also a low ranking male within the Notch coalitions but was first to engage other males. Charleston Mazino was the same way.

She knew there were cubs around and she could have just been teasing Mohawk to move off the area the cubs were at. Mohawk still has to be careful because he went in without any support. Another excellent video! I appreciate the narration all the while allowing the natural sound of these beautiful animals to shine through. I know it’s a difficult job to film nature at its best while tracking in a vehicle to try and go to places only the animal can go. Then trying to keep up with the action at the speed they go plus the speed & direction or change of direction at which they can travel! As a viewer, I can appreciate the danger you are in at such a close proximity at which, at anytime, they could run into or jump into your vehicle. 😳 I’m also amazed how you know which Lion pride a particular individual belongs to. Thank you for bringing Africa to us in lockdown. ❤️🐆🦒🐘🦓🦁🐃🐅❤️

Typical male lion fight behavior. The dominant male of the area will retreat into the heart of his territory when surprised and confronted by a big male. It's a survival/fighting strategy, fight on your own terms when you have the upper hand. Although I think the N. Avocas will eventually win this war given their prime age, BBoys have had a legendary run and may soon have to fight for it or run. Shame age has caught up with them.

@@jotaperdoros9654 That could be true but it looked like N. Avoca male Mohwak was also alone and he didnt know if there was Gowrie male coalition partner Tinyo was near by either when chasing after Nhena. What I think played out here is not Nhena worried about being out numbered but who was more aggressive and confident. It will be interesting how Nhena will respond once he finds Tinyo. Leave the area or seek after N. Avoca.

Was not expecting this from Nhenha, he was/is the absolute dominant among the coalition even before the disappearance of Mfomu. The Mohawk was not even charging, he was observing Nhenha from a long distance and Nhenha to the lady: SEE YOU NEXT TIME :D

Mohawk had the upper hand as he suprised Nhenha, Nhenha didn't know what is happening or how many males are there so he fleed, smart move by him, on the other hand risky but brave move by Mohawk.. Also we dont know full story, Blondie was prob very close by as they where both seen together at MalaMala Camp, which is few hundred meters to where this happened.. Being dominant between your brothers and in a fight with hostile male is 2 different things, for example Blondie always dominates Mohawk also, but we do know that Mohawk is far more fierce and agressive.. Same goes for Nhenha, he is very powerful and can dominate his brothers, but guys like Tinyo, Scrapper, Mfumo where far more fierce and agressive.. And its not like Nhenha is afraid of fight, he chased both of N. Avocas last year, also many young males recently.. He just in this situation did chose to fight, its very rare that in takeover scenarios lions fight immidiately, usually there are few weeks of chasing back and forth, testing strenght, strategy etc..

@@tr1x243 Nhenha did a smart move from some points of view, but it's move makes/made Avocas more aggressive, confident and the takeover easier. Now the takeover is inevitable and I hope it last for few months for the sake of sub-adults. btw I was hoping for the Nwaswitshaka to move northover but now it is up in the air if northern Avoca choose to takeover CSS.

The N Avoca male Mohawk was contact calling as he was chasing Nhenha ... Nhenha knew this and that it meant the boy chasing him wasnt alone ... The N Avoca boys better not go too deep in Mala Mala because they lose any kind of environment knowledge and if the Gowrie boys separate them then they will be in trouble. One of them wont make it out.

Not long ago it was Tinyo who chased the Northern Avocas away not Nhenha. Nhenha may be the dominant one between the two brothers but when it comes to territorial fights it is always Tinyo who shows the aggression and choose to fight. At this moment Mohawk is in best physical shape and not to mention his aggressive nature he just went straight after Nhenha. I wonder why Nhenha chosed to flee as it was his territory and also there were cubs and sub adults around.
